This is one of the O.T.S. facilities in Costa Rica. Visitors can pay a fee to enter, hire a guide, and sped a few hours wandering around trails looking for birds, tony frogs, etc. The guide they supplied was good, but not as good as then private guide who accompanied us. We visited after breakfast, which may have not been...

My wife and I spent three nights. I am a serious amateur birder, she is a photographer newly into photographing birds. The station has a wide variety of amazing birds, and, more important, bird guides who really know their stuff. I went on two guided birding walks starting early in the morning, and we went on one fascinating night walk....

As a scientist and professional nature photographer, I know that any authentic wildlife encounter requires patience, attention and luck. La Selva Biological Station provides one of the greatest opportunities to observe rainforest flora and fauna in all of Costa Rica. The rustic accommodations meld with the wild surroundings and the sounds of myriad birds, howler monkeys and insects permeated my...

This was truly a magical place. We loved spending time with the scientists and students here. Our room was basic and fit our needs. The food in the cafeteria was simple and very good. The staff were very helpful and the birding guides were wonderful. We will return.

This visit was arranged by our tour company so we did not have to worry about the bureaucracy other reviewers have mentioned. Our guide, Octavio, was excellent and helped us see a great variety of birds while we were there. He took us to a range of different locations to see different creatures. This included a particular type of fig...

My wife and I have stayed at the La Selva Biological Station several times in the last 15 years, the last being February 2017. We would not return did we not enjoy the experience. For those that don't know, La Selva is one of three biological research stations in Costa Rica run by the Organization for Tropical Studies - based...

We had heard that La Selva was the #1 spot in Costa Rica for birding, so it was our most-anticipated location. We made reservations for an early morning bird tour a couple months in advance, with the plan to spend our entire day exploring the area. We received no correspondence, and saw nothing in their advertising, that said you had...

Management response:

Dear Jonathan. We appreciate your perspective. We all agree that La Selva is a spectacular place to see tropical birds, although it is not possible to see them all in one day. With 477-recorded species over the last 30 years, it is a great place for birdwatchers and photographers. However, any naturalist, birdwatcher or photographer will tell you that seeing...

We visited La Selva for an afternoon guided hike while staying nearby. Our guide, Octavio, was outstanding. He found all sorts of wildlife and birds including a boa, howler monkeys, agouti, great curassow, sun bittern and the great green macaw among many others. As avid hikers, we really enjoyed our visit here. It is not a strenuous hike but is...

The 3 hour jungle tour was wonderful. The guide was knowledgeable and could see and hear many creatures. Close up observations. Saw old growth trees, many birds, plants, and bugs. Loved the leaf cutters and frogs.

Me and my wife stayed for 3 nights. It started with lots of rain, but we stayed around long enough for the weather to get better. In both rain amd sunshine, we watched lots of animals (more birds than you can imagine, lizards, frogs, two species of sloths, howler monkeys). The accomodation is basic, but that is what we expected....
