We were led around the grounds by Lenin Duarte but did not lodge at the station (It was $35USD each to get in to the reserve). We thoroughly enjoyed Lenin's expertise developed over 9 years at the station. We have some nice photos, especially of the Trogons, that we saw and are posted at my Flickr album. Visiting & touring...

Paved path through the woods - this was after our tour guide for Costa Rica scared us all into having super muddy shoes. We saw a lot of wildlife but strange because before we went out on the paved path a crew used blowers to clear the path of leaves, etc. I would not go back.

We didn't stay in the hotel but went on a guided tour, 2x a half day. I would definitely recommend going in the morning (8 am) because that's when most animals are active but because of the great quality of the guide and the station itself, also the afternoon tour is very interesting and you do get to see a...

This is a great place to see the wonderful birds of Costa Rica. You get one guided nature walk. There are tons of trails to explore. This is a research station, not a resort. The cafeteria has certain hours for meals which are local fare. Our room was a kilometer plus from the cafeteria so we drove there. We took...

One of our most amazing visits! My wife and I reference it often as the definition of a good vacation for --us--. It's NOT for everyone but if you like nature, animals, insects and interesting people and science then this is the place for you. The rooms were kind of musty, but it's the tropics and you are in the...

Rather than a group tour, as we had two young children we booked a private tour of the Biological Station. We had a lovely time, walking the trails, seeing various wildlife - birds, insects, peccary, monkey, bats....and learning about the flora and fauna. The guide was very informative, her English was excellent and she was a great 'spotter' and carried...

This is a pedestrian friendly reserve with well-groomed trails for the most part. Although wildlife sightings will vary and are dependent on the weather, we were fortunate to see sloths; a mot mot; a peccary; multiple lizards big and small; and, the highlight, 3 owls. Our guide was knowledgeable and had a good eye for spotting animals. We didn't stay...

I came to the research station primarily for bird photography, which was fantastic. I had my own outside guide. The food was healthy, mostly rice and chicken and salad. There is no air conditioning anywhere, and it is very hot and humid. The fans in the room help at night. I had no issue with any bugs or insects in...

The location was so beautiful it was such a shame we were marched at some speed to the talk area missing any opportunity to looks at the wonderful views and for any birds or animals. The talk and demonstration was interesting but lacked any real enthusiasm There was only a small group of us on the tour , it was...

Don't stay here if you're looking for plush accommodations. You get a 5" thick foam mattress on plywood, an oscillating fan hanging on the wall and a communal bathroom. This is first and foremost a research station for scientists and students. But if you're looking for wildlife in abundance and want to have fun meals and hikes with hardcore birders,...
