I found this place on tripadvisor, and I echo all the other positive reviews. Myself, husband, and two boys (age 5 and 8) stayed here for our ENTIRE 2 week vacation. It was perfect. We stayed in the green cottage, which has it's own private...More
My family of 4 (two daughters, ages 11 and 13) spent the last two nights of our week in Costa Rica at the Playa Negra Guesthouse. As soon as we walked through the gate into the garden area, I knew we had found a treasure....More
My family recently spent our winter break at Playa Negra Guesthouse. The yellow cottage was perfect for our family of four. The grounds were beautiful (sloths, parrots, toucans, howler monkeys, iguanas, all within the yard!) and well-kept; the property was clean; the owners and staff...More
Playa Negra GH exceeded my expectations. Our room was lovely -- spacious, clean, and the bed very comfortable, with an outdoor seating area. The grounds are stunningly beautiful with a gorgeous pool and lots of wildlife (howler monkeys, iguanas) to see while lazing in the...More
Playa Negra was a wonderful and accommodating hotel. It was a calm place to rest and enjoy the carribean coast from, just across the street from access to a quiet beach in Cahuita. The hotel has a higher end feel and seemed extremely safe. The...More

Arenal is about 90 kms northwest of San José; Cahuita to San José is about a 3½ hour drive. I would easily add another 2 hours to get to Arenal and this if traffic is good! A better option is to stay in Alajuela first, visit the volcano and then head to Cahuita. Going to Poás Volcano is also a great option. You can stop off at the Doka coffee plantation and the La Paz waterfalls/ animal sanctuary. Very interesting! We stayed in San José in order to do this excursion. We hired a guide and went by minivan. Good luck.

Sorry, I don't know the answer. We had rented a car because we planned to travel to various parts of the country while we were there. If you've already made arrangements to stay at Playa Negra, you could try to reach out to the owners Marise and Pierre. And give them my best!!

"Possibly a second floor room on the main building would be cooler...but I'd get a room elsewhere with AC!"
