For a visitor, a hotel couldn't be positioned better. In the middle of town, opposite the national theatre, the pedestrian shopping street behind the hotel & within walking distance of all the museums, markets etc. The rooms were spacious, comfortable & well appointed. The breakfast was a generous buffet. The staff - every single one - so pleasant, courteous and hospitable.. the lounge area at reception really comfortable. All in all a great hotel. Perhaps the only downside for more conservative guests were the see thru frosted glass walls & doors in the bathroom & toilet. Even a couple of other guests felt that was awkward. But saying that - a really lovely hotel.

The hotel is an interesting combination of old and modern. It is located in the central area, close to the shopping streets and opposite the Theater. the rooms are clean, equipped with coffee and tea maker and water bottle. The restaurant has a special menu that is worth trying; as well as drinks, especially tonic gin. They are very strict with COVID 19 measures.

We stayed at this property for two nights during a recent visit to Costa Rica. The staff were very nice and arranged transportation for us. The room was very clean and the shower worked well. Bottled water was provided even though the tap water is ok in Costa Rica. The included breakfast was ample with many choices. The fresh fruit was particularly good. The location is also central and within walking distance of many of the things you might want to see in San Jose.

Difficult to check in only one person there at 6 PM. Very nice interior. We went to the bar and they are definitely watering down their liquor without a doubt.!! Breakfast was excellent, but I am not comfortable with Martinis where the liquor is altered. This hotel is right in the city center and you need to be very aware. You cannot feel safe at night in this area as a tourist.

Beautiful and very clean hotel! From the very dust night we checked in, the front desk and all the staff were very friendly and nice! This hotel is in A PRIME location! Right next to it is a beautiful historical theater and cathedral. The rooms are super clean! The only thing we didn’t like is that there’s not a door that separates the bedroom from the bathroom and the mattress was pretty firm. The breakfast buffet is absolutely huge and very tasty!! I worked out too and the gym was pretty nice. Definitely would recommend staying here if you want to walk around San Jose and be in the middle of everything.

We stayed at Gran Hotel for 1 night before we set out on our Costa Rican adventures. The hotel was very nice, and right next to the Teatro Nacional (also worth a visit), and about 5 blocks from the Mercado Central. The staff was fantastic, we loved talking with Tony at the valet station -- very friendly and he gave us lots of good recommendations. We had an amazing buffet breakfast in the hotel - tons of choices - both american and costa rican foods - delicious! The room was comfortable but the toilet room and shower room were completely translucent glass -- which was a bit odd. Given all of the incredibly areas of Costa Rica, I would not opt for spending much time in San Jose, but if you find yourself spending a night in San Jose this is a nice spot.

This is unfair. The hotel is high quality but in a wrong place. Downtown San Jose is rugged, with edges. As you step outside, you face this contradiction. Hotel itself: friendly service, nice design - but wrong surroundings impact the total travel experience.

This a nice hotel centrally located downtown across from the museum. This a very busy area with lots of stores and several markets within walking distance. The reception desk on the 5th floor which I found a bit odd. The rooms are beautiful and the staff is friendly. The hotel offers parking which is off premises located one block from the hotel.

Complacent? Overrated. Overpriced. They must enjoy being the only game in town. On the plus side, the building is stunning (mostly from the outside) and the location is perfect for exploring the old city center. The downsides, however, are significant. The rooms are Hong Kong/NYC tiny. There is no place for two people to sit. There’s barely room to walk on either aside of the bed, which is not a king no matter what they say. There’s no door to the sink area, so it’s impossible not to wake your partner on an overnight trip to the loo. The bed is some kind of firm and the pillows some kind of limp. Weird combination… and I love a firm mattress, but this one felt like a pad on wood logs. While I’m on the subject of the bed, check out the picture. That was the sheet/duvet cover on our bed. It looks like what happens when you fold a sheet into a rollaway or sleeper sofa and get it caught and torn. And I happen to know that the hotel offers neither rollaways or cots. When we were checking in, a sad and sleep-deprived father was trying to ask the checkin staff for one. They were perplexed and totally unhelpful. He was trying to explain that he had booked a king room expecting he and his large teenaged son to easily share the bed. But the bed is not a king so neither got any sleep the night before. He wanted a mat, cot or anything so that the son could sleep on the floor (I’m guessing in the room’s hallway because there’s no room around the bed). The checkin staff acted as though this man had three heads. This was going on while we were checking in. Solo hablo un pocito de Español pero estas chicas parecían saber menos Ingles. All over Costa Rica we were floored by how much English everyone speaks and understands so clearly. But at THE big hotel in the Capitol where all the gringos stay, they don’t? This poor man was basically told to pound sand another night or two or three at $200-$300/night. Pobrecito! We had heard and read that the hotel has a good restaurant. I can’t fathom the tastebuds of anyone claiming that to be true. The prices are high — $60 for two terrible sandwiches, mushy fries and no alcohol. The service was slow and we seemed to be caught up in a pissing match between two servers, confused over whose section our table was in. Yuck. We would have been better off at the Argentinian place across the street. The breakfast buffet looked great but we didn’t have the time. You need time to make that $30pp++ worth it. In addition to the location and architecture, there were two bright sports. One, the history. On the fourth floor is a sort of shrine to JFK who stayed there in 1963. Furniture, photographs and the JFK presidential suite sent us on a Google history lesson that was a fun diversion. Second, Luis (bellman/doorman) saved us a boatload on airport transportation. The hotel had quoted $85 each direction. On Saturday night, Luis said he would have a cab for us on Sunday morning at 7:30. The cab was there. He drove safely. He indulged my terrible Spanish. We arrived at the domestic terminal with plenty of time to spare.
