Planned to stay for 3 nights but stayed for 1. Horrible! Ignored my request for a refund. So I got it thru my bank. Got owner's whatsapp #. They read my request + photos. No response, no acknowledgement, no apology. They blocked me instead!!
Large spacious rooms but unfortunately my room was to front of the hotel, where I was treated to the noise from an on-street party (across the road) which went on until 4am. This occurred on two consecutive nights- although the party goers were rained off early on the 2nd night. I understand that there was little the hotel could do about it but my tip is to request a quieter room to the rear of the hotel. Also my check-in lasted for an hour as the price I was being charged was higher than the email confirmation I had received and the receptionist had to contact the manager/owner out of hours to verify the price. Totally exhausted after two long flights, at 11pm it was unwelcome to have this discussion!
We stayed here three separate times in 2014 when we travelled extensively throughout Costa Rica and, as we had very much enjoyed those visits, we opted to stay there again last month. Sadly, the hotel has gone seriously downhill since then. The building is in a poor state of repair and the rooms are gloomy and in need of updating. Customer service was totally unsatisfactory - whether this is the impact of Covid or bad management it is difficult to say. On previous visits the warmth and welcome of all the staff was something which stood out - the opposite was true on our most recent stay. At breakfast on our first morning, we were completely ignored and other guests who arrived after us were served before us. Not that breakfast is worth having. Our room was not serviced on the first day, apart from having towels taken away and not replaced. Cleaning of the room needs more attention as cobwebs behind the door remained in place for the entirety of our stay. Our patio was unusable owing to its filthy state and the cracked glass table. The last straw was when we asked for a 2pm check out to coordinate with our pickup. We were refused, due to "company policy", even when we pointed out that most of the hotel's rooms were unoccupied. They said we could have an extra 15 minutes - after discussion extended to 30 - after which they would charge extra. At 11.31am they knocked on the door demanding we leave or pay. We pointed out our email booking had said 12 noon for check out so we had another hour. In the end we left before that because of the bad feeling and ill will. On the positive side, things that worked well were the airport transfer arranged by the hotel, reasonable wifi in our room and decent hot water in the shower, although an incredible amount of water was wasted every time while waiting for the hot water to come through. One good thing which hasn't changed is the location which is excellent, a safe, relatively quiet area which is walking distance into downtown San Jose but, more importantly, steps away from Barrio Escalante with its great bars and restaurants. We will be coming back to this area but will be looking for a different place to stay next time.…
I arrived at 8.00 am to join organised grouo trip the next day . I was picked up from hotel on pre booked taxi . On my arrival the young man on reception was so unhelpful and rude - was not interested in helping, just kept saying no English . He had my passport for my name but showed no interest in any customer support - I was tired and thirsty after leaving Guatemala at 1am - no kindness, care or customer service was shown . I'm presuming the young man was night shift . An older chap turned up qt 9am and by this time I was tearful, kept telling me to be calm and initially refused to call the tour operator. I have travelled to 43 countries and never have received such careless, quite unkind service
We had higher hopes for the Hotel Bergerac as our friend had recommended it. We arrived on Jan 1 at about 9am and the very young and not very helpful person said under no conditions (except $50/hr) would we be able to get into our room before 3pm. Happy New Year to you too! Fortunately, we had the wherewithal to go back and there was a very nice older gentlemen who was a million times more helpful. We did get in before 1:30pm. We got the noisiest room which was really annoying. But when we asked to switch rooms for our second night, the older gentleman was super helpful. Regardless, with the non-welcome from that first guy, and a first night of little sleep, and then the chef not making amends for a vegan diet, I would not stay there again.
Nice hotel, offering a good value for the money. The staff is friendly and breakfast is quite good, but not large. The hotel is very secure. Overall this is a good place for the price. There were a surprising number of nice restaurants in the vicinity.
Le Bergerac is perfectly placed in the Inner City but with its lush garden settings, you don't feel like you are in the city at all. The rooms are very comfortably furnished and clean with toiletries provided. The staff are very friendly and helpful, having a good knowledge of the area and able to suggest day trips, places to eat, etc The breakfast offered is tasty and free coffee is offered throughout the day. Le Bergerac makes a great city base for a business trip or leisure travel.
Nice little hotel, a short walk into town. We were lucky to have a second floor room with a balcony. Very clean and good value. Would have given five stars but the breakfast was very poor - rubbery scrambled egg, toast that wasn’t, nasty cheap juice and a miniscule helping of fruit.
Very Recommended- excellent Breakfast -Very Friendly Staff - Quiet - Very Nice Rooms - WiFi functioned well - Easy Walk to the Center,Museums - Very Nice Lobby and Garden - Family Ran Business - drinking Water in the Lobby.
We found this through a 10-year-old tour book which raves about how well this converted home has been updated & kept up. Thank heavens, and management, this is still true. The staff are approachable and considerate. And the rooms are spacious and clean. We only stayed 3 nights, but could easily have done more. This is San Jose at its most cultural. Thank you to Leo and Ernesto, supervisors.
