I want to start by saying I am a “gringo”and have been coming to San Jose for about 10 years a couple times a year and staying from 2 weeks to a month in this beautiful country. I came for the adventure I know I can find here, I know some of you understand exactly what I mean. I came down on Dec 14, 2022 and stayed until Jan 14, 2023. I stayed the entire time at the Dunn Inn and was totally satisfied and enjoyed my stay there immensely. I was only supposed to stay for 21 days but I was enjoying the visit so much I extended my stay a few times and stayed 30 days. The Dunn’s pleasant staff extended my extra days with no problem and on one extension upgraded my room to a beautiful suite. The hotel itself is beautiful, not in a modern way but it has a warm “Old World” charm. The owners Linda and Victor support local artists and decorated the hotel with paintings and art that is for sale and the proceeds going back to the artists. Walking through the hotel is like walking through an art gallery. I bought 3 of the paintings as gifts for friends here in the US. The rooms are clean, quiet and of adequate size for an enjoyable stay. There is one clarification I must make about the noise, I had a room adjacent to the streets and on Friday and Saturday nights there was late night noise from the traffic backing up because of the activity at the Taormina Hotel down the block. The restaurant’s food was ok (this is Costa Rica so do not expect to get norte americano tasting food), the portions were adequate and the staff was beyond friendly and they always wore a smile even when serving an old toad like myself. The wait time was probably a little less than most restaurants in CR. Some of the staff does not speak english (and i no hablo espanol) but there is always someone there that can help translating. Another topic I want to address is the reason I stayed at the Dunn Inn. My very good friend, Elizabeth Montero Zeledon whom I met during my first visit to CR 10 years ago directed me there and took care of all the details concerning my reservation and travel arrangements from the airport. Eli worked at Hotel Del Rey as the reservations and tour/travel manager. She worked there until covid when the hotel was basically closed because of a lack of customers. Eli now works as an independent booking agent for a group of hotels and tour/recreation/fishing franchises. She always strives to get the best bargains for her customers. i cannot say enough about Eli going the extra mile, in fact miles, for her clients, even making dental, doctor, etc appointments. Please reach out to her for a helping hand from a very qualified lady who will endeavor to make your stay in CR much more stress free and enjoyable. Eli’s contact info : WhatsApp +506 8742 3796

Generally, we had a very pleasant one-night stay at the Dunn Inn. The building is historic and the room was generally comfortable with a ceiling fan, air con, strong shower, and good TV bouquet of several hundred stations (mostly in Spanish but we did find CNN). The American breakfast was good and filling and also included juice and fresh fruit. The hotel is close to the zoo and botanical garden and walkable to the downtown pedestrian mall and gold and other museums. The only drawback was that our room was situated under a staircase and was noisy at times when people went up and down the stairs to the second floor. There is also a good attached restaurant, Cafe Amon where one can grab a nice meal. Staff were all very friendly and helpful and it is easy to grab a cab or Uber from this location.

Bed isn't very good, but I always travel with a rolled up foam mattress topper anyway and it's fine with that. But otherwise the place is amazing. Charming, quiet, in a cool neighborhood that's close to the main downtown attractions. Great, quiet restaurant on site. Best food I've had in San Jose. And the price for the room can't be beat.

We lucked out finding this little gem. The front desk staff were friendly, and helped us with our bags to and from the car/parking lot. Room was quiet and clean. The breakfast included coffee, eggs, bacon and toast. Very cool boutique hotel.

About a five minute walk from the center of town, this place was perfect for me. My room had a nice little balcony overlooking a quiet street. A wonderfully appointed bar and restaurant was perfect for a nice evening cocktail or full-on meal.

Do not stay in room #27. It is very old and smelly. It had two windows facing the street. It is easy for people to climp in fr ok m the street. We requested to change the room. The inside and upstair rooms are must nicer. Overall, it is two or three star hotel. You can ask much for it. Our tour is including this hotel in our packsge.

We (a family of three) spent our first and last nights in this charming , modestly appointed, period hotel in the historic quarter of Barrio Amon. The rooms have a strong period feel to them but do vary in size and amenities. A very basic breakfast for those on the B&B package is provided by a cafe, not part of the hotel but attached to it. No other meals are provided. The staff are lovely and very helpful. The hotel is a 20-minute walk to the National Theatre area of town. Plenty of decent restaurants for dinner can be found within easy walking distance. Overall, no complaints.

A few nights were spent at this quirky but sweet older hotel to begin and end a GAdventures tour in April 2019. Considering that its name (as in “done in!”) seemed a forewarning about the accommodations, I was delighted to find that the Dunn Inn far-surpassed my expectations. My room was recently renovated, comfortable and clean – its only drawback being the view of the outside opposite wall, a small matter. A good selection of cable stations are available and a computer sits downstairs for the guests’ convenience. I didn’t use the lounge by the front desk but enjoyed meals in the bar/dining area, next door. This area is open, bright and cute actually, with playful bird motifs adorning the wallpaper and furniture. I found the breakfasts tended to be simple and plain, and coffee arrives in a rustic tin cup. However, dinners were ample and very good and, I thought, better value. Prices are competitive, in general. Our bartender doubled as head waiter and was professional and courteous, as were other staff members. Some travellers believe that Ticos appear to be aloof but, even if that is the case elsewhere, the staff at the Dunn Inn was always personable and conversant. (I was especially pleased that I was remembered after a two and a half-week absence, and treated like a friend). One evening when I struggled to call home, via the hotel, desk staff was especially helpful (I’m a dinosaur when it comes to using devices). The Dunn Inn is situated in an older section of San José but within a short walk to attractions, bakeries, restaurants, and shopping. I was warned to not go sight-seeing alone, either early in the morning or after dark but went out without incident during all daylight hours, ..I was later told by others that evenings are for the ‘adventurous’. If I travel again to San José, I will definitely return to this hotel with its lovely staff. TIP: Unless your digestive system is made of cast iron, don’t order the ‘salsa picante’ in the restaurant – it’s the hottest thing I’ve ever eaten (and briefest)!!

Situated in a nice area of town. Very nice building. Lovely friendly staff. Very accommodating. I arrived with a mobility scooter and was shown to the most accessible room behind reception. Chair lift by door may not work as a member of staff always carried it in/out (4/5 steps I think)
