This is our favourite hotel brand within Indonesia, this was our first time staying at Tugu Bali. The Manager, Jenny, couldn’t be kinder or more helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, including offering to print out a contract for me that I needed to sign. She and the rest of the Tugu team always met us with a smile.

They are also very discreet. After our stay we found out that a famous step-brother of a certain reality TV show focussed on a family of sisters was staying there too and we didn’t know until we saw it on social media (we now know that happens a lot).

Jenny took us on a tour of the property and every turn there was another delight and wow factor. The owner’s family are so creative and their attention to detail is phenomenal. You see the best of Indonesia throughout. They are such a unique property that provide you something different to other hotel brands.

The food, amazing. My children would have eaten at Ji the Japanese restaurant breakfast, lunch and dinner if they could. My son’s favourite (11yrs) is the dragon roll.

Our accommodation was also another wow factor. The details in the room were divine, modern cons like USB chargers nicely hidden in traditional Javanese furniture. The bathroom was amazing and the environmentally friendly approach to the toiletries was very much appreciated (as it is throughout the hotel).

The location is also great. Off the main strip of Canguu. The structure of the hotel hides this so well. So you can get your Bali fix and then retreat to the complimentary afternoon tea.

I couldn’t recommend Tugu Bali highly enough.

This hotel is a nugget, apparently this area has seen significant development within the last 5 years and with it has come a lot of thoroughfare that gives it a mixed bag in terms of what it has to offer in the area.
The hotel is exquisitely and tastefully designed, rooms are quaint, warm and cosy. Step outside and you'll feel the bustle of a typical beach location of diverse visitors at every price point but overall quite a friendly and sedate bunch that adds to the flair and the flavour of the area.
All in all, an awesome place to stay, great service, great location, great value.

This hotel is in Canggu which is a crowded area. But when you enter this hotel, you will feel so relaxed and quiet. Its such a best choice to stay at when you want to feel relax and peace but still want to be in a an area that has many restaurants and shops.

My wife and I spent 4 nights at Hotel Tugu in one of the suites, the hotel is in a perfect location to explore Changgu its beaches, cafes and restaurants. The hotel has a very traditional Bali vibe so don't expect the same as in a more contemporary 5 * hotel. The breakfast was somewhat limited but the quality of the food was fantastic. The Japanese restaurant which is part of the hotel had some of the nicest Japanese food we had, in fact we ate at the restaurant 3 times, and it was very reasonably priced. Make sure you make a booking for the restaurant as it gets busy at night. The staff were wonderful as you would find in most Bali hotels. If you are planning on visiting Changgu will would highly recommend Hotel Tugu.

We stayed here 9 years ago and absolutely loved it. The Tugu was the only hotel on a surfing beach surrounded by tiny little Street eateries and it was perfect and tranquil so we were so excited to be coming back to Canggu that I didn't do my usual due diligence with regards to reviews... bad mistake!

Now The Tugu is surrounded by clubs with booming bass notes so the peaceful vibe is long gone and the rooms look tired and in need of an update. We were kept awake until 4 am, not so much by the noise which earplugs mostly muffled but by the bass which made the bed shake! Management said that the nearby clubs only opened after covid but reviews on TA show that this was a problem since long before the pandemic. We were moved to a room further away which was much quieter.

I realise that much of the hotel decor is antique, and that's its appeal, but there's a fine line between shabby chic and shabby and much of Tugu falls on the wrong side - dirty, cracked cups, fraying towels, flimsy loo roll and cheap toiletries at £250 a night?? One wardrobe had no shelves or hanging space just a safe that didn't work! The other had just four hangers. Wifi is spotty everywhere.

The service is fantastic except for breakfast on the rooftop. We regularly waited half an hour for our first coffee and another for our second. We were often at breakfast for 2 hours! They were doing their best but the kitchen appears to be two floors down so often there were no staff in the restaurant.

Lesson learned - never go back to somewhere you've previously adored, it simply won't match your memories!

Response from Tugu Hotels, Marketing at Hotel Tugu Bali
Responded 9 Oct 2022
Dear Mr/s Lazzagear, Greetings from Hotel Tugu Bali, First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to write us your feedbacks upon your stay in August. We are very sorry to hear that you did not have the true Tugu experience that we promised. Yes, Canggu has changed tremendously in the past few years, and we feel we, as well as Bali’s media partners, have done our best in describing this through our website, social media and other channels, the change that Canggu has gone through. Some love it and some don’t, but it is what it is, Canggu is no longer the quaint little fisherman village it used to be, and instead, it is a very dynamic, bustling, trendiest part of Bali now fully developed with the island's best food and beverage venues as well as boutique shops, yoga, surf, crossfit & wellness centers etc. We did have quite a challenging month in August in regards to noise pollution, when it seemed that after 2 long years of pandemic, Bali & Canggu was in full swing with so many visitors. We are once again truly sorry about the noise disturbance that happened during that month, and together with other hotels & residents in the whole Canggu area, we really had fought very hard every day that month for immediate solution. It did took a month, however, I am very happy to report that thanks to a positive meeting between all government officials and tourism operators around Canggu area, noise regulations have been issued since then and announced in all media, and since the end of August, we no longer have noise disturbance at night and our guests can sleep well once again. As for the rest of your feedbacks, we are truly grateful to you for all of them and have acted immediately to rectify them. We had 2 very difficult years during the pandemic and I truly apologize on behalf of the team that it took some time to get everybody and everything up to speed back to the high standards we had before pandemic. We are fully confident now that we will not let you down should you be so kind to give us another chance. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly through the hotel’s email, whatsapp or social media and ask for me, and it would be truly my pleasure if I could personally arrange for your next visit at our Tugu in Bali, or if you would like to try our beautiful heavenly sister properties on the next door island Lombok (Hotel Tugu Lombok) or Java (Hotel Tugu Malang & Blitar) Once again, we sincerely thank you and we hope we will get to make things up to you for our shortfallings. Wishing you a pleasant day ahead! Kindest regards Ari & All Tugu family WA +628970246749

We loved this place. The room was large and very comfortable especially with the outside pool and daybed. The bedding and room facilities couldn't be faulted. The room was made up twice a day and to a very high standard. The location is perfect for exploring Canggu being right beside the beach and not far from great restaurants/shops. Breakfast is included and involves a huge selection of options. The decor is perfect with a strong Bali theme unlike some of the larger chain hotels. The best part are the staff who are super friendly and will do anything to assist. In particular, Andre and Dayu made our visit memorable.

This is a wonderful large open space hotel that includes many cultural details of Balinese arts including a small museum heralding back to the Dutch colonial times. The room I had had a lovely entry with a pool of koi fish, a outdoor bathroom wing with huge tiled tub/shower, large bed/sitting room and dipping pool outside. The antique amenities, wooden shutters, stone carvings and various wooden furnishings all add to the charm of the hotel. One tiny downside, there is no immediate access to the beach but it can partially be seen from the second floor Chinese restaurant on the second floor - the restaurant also serves breakfast.

We recently fulfilled a dream and returned to Hotel Tugu Bali after honeymooning there 12 years ago. We told staff we would bring back our children one day and we had the unique honor of doing that. We were welcomed back by staff with open arms and immediately resonated with the stunning lobby and grounds we remembered.

From the breathtaking entranceway which opens up to the enormous open air lobby, the unique antiques collection on display throughout the resort pay homage to the depth of history and intersection of cultures that have permeated Balinese history and continue to make it a place of unparalleled beauty.

We had welcome drinks and delved back into the memories that had transcended the 12 years since our initial visit. The magic and irresistible charm of Hotel Tugu Bali permeates the air, and it retains its mission to provide an oasis to its visitors while also connecting them deeply and inviting them into the serene spirituality that characterizes Balinese culture.

Our accommodations surpassed any expectations we had during both of our visits. We were blessed to stay in the Walter Spies suite which is a tribute to his impact upon the artistic scene and culture of Bali. The outdoor plunge pool was a solace set against the tropical foliage, and was a favorite for our family.

We enjoyed walking to Canggu Beach and dining on property - the legendary breakfasts and meals living up to the delicious memories we had preserved over the past decade. We also got to do the Waroeng Tugu dining experience to emulate how the Javanese and Balinese people traditionally ate in their own homes, and resonated with that experience deeply.

The true appeal of Hotel Tugu Bali for us was the staff and the exquisite hospitality we experienced on our honeymoon, and again amplified during our recent visit with our children.

The allure of Hotel Tugu Bali and how it will impact your soul and provide you with an unforgettable cultural and spiritually uplifting experience is something I wholeheartedly recommend.

Forever aloha from our island paradise home in Hawai’i to this piece of irresistible paradise on Bali!

I am not sure how we lucked onto this hotel, may be post COVID amnesia or deSire to travel. It is a gem of a place. Although not fancy, it is a down to earth place with genuine Balinese hospitality and smile. We had a suite with a large open plan bedroom and living area and an attached bathroom and if we wanted a hot tub. It was made most,y of wood with Balinese style. It was comfortable and clean. The hotel was just opening after COVID so there were a few hiccups but the staff made us feel welcome and special. We were invited to and attende their religious ceremony as well as a special dinner table with traditional Balinese dance and music, highlight of our stay. Breakfast is on a terrace upstairs from wher one can see the Changgu beach and the surfers in the morning. For dinner there is a fusion Japanese Balinesecuisine as well as many traditional Balinese dishes. We may go there again if time permits.

Amazing staff, perfect service, great food. This hotel is a pure gem, every piece of decoration is an amazing piece of art, you could spend hours just walking around and enjoying this museum/hotel. A very short walk from the beach and perfectly located in Canggu, this hotel is a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of a very chaotic city. We will be back.
