This hotel has had some not so good reports but we were very happy with our visit this month. Granted, the location is not ideal, but once through the door, or remote parking gate, it is a mini paradise. Rooms are comfy and large and the staff all welcoming and friendly. We have been visiting Grahamstown for 3 years now,... More

On the whole I agree with Karin P below: old world charm but VERY tired! And I know they can't do anything about the location, but it really isn't pleasant! (From about 6am a lady in the taxi rank opposite was smashing wooden crates with a rock to get her roadside braai going for the 'off to work' rush of... More

When I've learned from an elder lady at the hotel that Nelson Mandela spend some time here, it was an honor for me to stay a little time my feet in Madiba's path, just as an historical accident. You will be able to enjoy the decadent test of a taste of 19 century colonialism.

We stayed at the Cock House for a week in December 2013. We expected Norden's restaurant to have nice food, but we were unprepared for the exceptional tasting experience and ambiance. The Cock House has a lot of old charm. Don't expect the put together quality of a recently built hotel box, but the stay was still very comfortable and... More

Sadly, this historic home has ended up being in a grotty part of Grahamstown, as the town has developed and faces onto the back end of a shopping complex and a noisy taxi rank. A previous reviewer mentioned that it needs TLC. Indeed. On the surface it has a 'gentleman and scholar's' feel to it, but the linen is tired,... More

We stayed two nights in November 2013. The food was excellent for Dinner and Breakfast. Appreciated the history of the place and its old world charm but the hotel is looking a little tired and needs some TLC to give it new life. We were the only guests so it was a little flat. The rooms were clean and enjoyable.

I have stayed at the Cock House twice now, and both were great experiences. Their restaurant is superb and you should eat there at least once during your stay, and possible every night if you can make it. The staircase to the upstairs rooms were a little difficult to navigate with a large suit case but this was only a... More

Having not dined there before , we were pleased when – on a recent visit to Grahamstown - our friends there suggested we visit the Cock House . We were happy to agree to this as we knew that the establishment had an excellent reputation ( but somehow did not get to visit there on numerous trips to the city... More

A group of colleagues and I stayed at the Cock House during a work visit to Grahamstown, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished, the breakfast is simple but delicious, and dinner at the restaurant was also good. The staff at the hotel really tried to accommodate our every wish - and we had a... More
