If you want to luxuriate in an old fashioned way book now. Rooms were large with a separate bath and shower in a room as big as many bathrooms. Help yourself to sherry before a sumptuous meal before finishing your dining with a brandy. Grounds are relaxing with plenty of birdlife.

We could not have picked a better place to stop over. The rooms were excellent, the food was outstanding and the staff made us very welcome indeed, would recommend to anyone, we loved how all the rooms were different, we stayed in the Lady Elizabeth room, very large with a huge en-suite.

Since our vist a year ago, the price for Hacklewood increased by 20%. The house is now looking tired and getting grubby for the kind of tarrifs the owners demand. Deperately in need of upgrading and investment. Large stains on carpets. Mosquito net around bed looks like it hasn't been washed in years. Towel holder and toilet roll holder hanging...

Convenient spot for a break in Port Elizabeth. 5 mins drive from the airport. Friendly staff and very quaint rooms and grounds. Breakfast a little underwhelming, pool not the cleanest, but overall very chilled and relaxing. 15-20 mins drive from the waterfront where all the restaurants are.

This beautiful house is situated securely in a wonderful garden with guinea fowl. Ours was a very short stay unfortunately, as we were flying out the following day. The airport is 5 minutes away but very little flight noise. Our room was at the front of the house with a lovely balcony and probably the largest bathroom I have ever...

We enjoyed this beautiful house and the delicious food. Would have given this 5 stars if only they had understood what gluten-free meant and provided me with some gluten-free bread or even a rice cake for breakfast as I had emailed and requested in advance.

If modern is your thing , this place is not for you. A 100 year old house with the place full of antique furniture, which may not be to everyone's taste. Having said that the place have every mod con you could wish for, bedroom was huge with a private separate garden. Huge bathroom with quirky sinks placed in old...

We stayed here for just one night but will certainly have strong memories of the warmth and generosity of our welcome. The food at breakfast and dinner was superlative. The carefully chosen wine list gave us a great introduction to some of South Africa's wines; we particularly enjoyed a Pinot Noir from Ghost Corner. Other posts have given good descriptions...

After 16 hours travelling from London via Joburg, arriving at Hacklewood Hill was a delight. A beautifully maintained period property, it provided us with the restful solace we required. Lovely garden set away from the hustle and bustle of Port Elizabeth but only a few minutes from the centre and the airport. That said, we were sorry we were able...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1898, and nestled in a lush English garden setting in the leafy suburb of Walmer, Hacklewood Hill is one of the few remaining Victorian Manor Houses in the city, and as such retains much of the elegance and grace it would have boasted when its first inhabitants – a young doctor and his family – once lived here. Guests are greeted with intricately stained glass doors, gleaming wooden floors and the gentle sheen of wooden banisters lovingly buffed and polished for more than a century. Wandering around the house’s two reception rooms, your eye naturally gravitates from one fascinating period piece to another. A black and white checkerboard tiled veranda overlooks a sparkling swimming pool, perfect for leisurely dips on hot summer days – while the well-established garden beckons for a quiet stroll or perhaps even a civilised game of croquet on the lawn. The more energetic can opt for a gentlemanly game of tennis or just choose a secluded spot in the garden to enjoy the abundant birdlife which calls the grounds of Hacklewood home. The manor house’s eight luxury en suite rooms which are equally as enticing, especially as each so perfectly captures the essence of the Victorian Age. Each is individually decorated in palettes ranging from pastel blues and rose bedecked pinks to more masculine browns and reds. As a result, each room has its own unique character and returning guests will enjoy experiencing them all, and will, no doubt, be loath to pick a favourite at the end. In order to truly experience Hacklewood Hill at the height of its stately Victorian glory, guests need to make a point of opting for at least one dinner at the house’s five star restaurant. The dining room’s magnificent chandelier lights, to full perfection the cut glass, crystal goblets, starched linen and full silver service on the tables below, while superbly trained waiters serve a splendid array of cordon bleu dishes that emanate from the kitchen. Little wonder that the restaurant has garnered itself a slew of fine dining awards and has become a firm favourite on the Port Elizabeth dining scene – not only for its exquisite dinners, but also full English breakfasts, High Tea's and light lunches. For a thoroughly enjoyable trip back to a time when days were long and unhurried, furnishings were beautiful and handmade, and every meal was an occasion to use only the best china and silverware, guests need look no further than Hacklewood Hill Country House. ... more   less
