Backpackers Ritz is walking distance to a luxury shopping mall and a few other shops... it is a ways from downtown which is actually nice -- it feels much safer in a suburban type location. Short taxi ride (15-20 minutes) from the airport. Spacious, inviting common rooms, nice pool and garden area, nice staff. Not the cleanest hostel I've ever... More

I love a place where you are made to feel like one of the family... and this is definitely one of those. As a single traveller in JoBerg for a couple of days I didn't want to be in a hotel on my own so I chose to be in a hostel instead and was so pleased that I did.... More

As a single female traveller stopping in Joburg for just a few days I could not have made a better choice. You made me feel like part of the Ritz family. Thank you to Stephen, Peter, Gavin & especially to your lovely girls for making me so welcome. I can't wait to return. X

After a beautiful trip through SA we arrived in Jo'burg and were extremely disappointed about this hostel. It was the most expensive one on our trip but also the worst. Our room was small, had just a really small window and smelled like you are allowed to smoke in there. We got a different room the next day but it... More

I would never go there again! The room was nice, the location and the garden are beautiful. But at least one of the receptionists was incredibly unfriendly, rude and not helpful at all. The reception is open 24/7. However, when my friend called to ask for directions because he couldn't find the place at 3 am the guy didn't help... More

Someone from Joburg recommended this backpackers because it was in a good area. The backpackers itself is pretty bad; really gross/sketchy bathrooms in dorm area, cramped dorms, pervasive smell of piss, crusty vibe. It's about a 25 minute walk to the Rosebank zone, a high-class mall with shopping, food, a movie theatre, and most important, the Rosebank Gautrain stop. The... More

The area is safe, but without any nightlife. We had booked the double room and found a room next to the bathroom in a rugged shag at the lot. The sheets and pillows were riddled with short black hair and crumbs, the walls had large cracks and the floor was filthy, too. There was no locker at toilette door, so... More

To be honest the backpackers Ritz is like much more backpackers and a lot less Ritz. I paid extra for a private room but wish I had opted for the cleaner looking share rooms. My room was out the back of the property and it was musty and dank. The communal bathroom wasn't great and the door for the loo... More

Last weekend a few of my friends came up to Johannesburg ( as they are not locals they didn't know to much about the city). As I had previously heard that the Ritz backpackers was a great place to stay I thought it would be appropriate to book my friends into the backpackers. As we all knew it was a... More
