My partner and I had the pleasure of a recent two-night stay at the Quarters. I had been to this lovely boutique hotel in the past for a dinner and a lunch and was always impressed. I was unsure how the hotel had weathered the Covid storm and was also concerned about noise levels on Florida Road. I am pleased to say that neither were an issue. The Quarters is as elegant and calming as ever and we did not hear any Florida Road noise on Friday or Saturday night. There was a nearby prayer service on Sunday morning but thankfully it was not too early. From the friendly security guard to the welcoming reception staff, from the polite and helpful waiters and porters, we were made to feel very welcome. I must single out Kelly who was particularly helpful, professional and supportive when we needed to secure an additional room at short notice. All in all, it was a really comfortable and enjoyable stay at a deserved Durban landmark and I will continue to recommend Quarters to those visiting the city.

Let me caveat this review by saying that the hotel industry has suffered greatly under COVID. Some have gone under completely, others have closed temporarily, while others like Quarters have struggled on. I think our experience would have been different under different circumstances. The hotel is taking extreme precautions to mitigate against the spread of COVID. You must complete a health form 24 hours before arrival (but we only received it the morning we were to check in, after we were already on the road). Staff, including cleaning staff, are not allowed to enter your room during your stay which means there are no housekeeping services. The on-site restaurant is currently closed but the hotel can deliver a basic (cold) breakfast to your door for 100 rand (better to go to one of the local restaurants instead). The hotel is lovely and is in a very convenient location at the start of the Florida Road district. There are lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. It's also a quick 10 minute drive to the beachfront area of Durban and many other attractions. We booked the family room and it was very spacious with two very large, comfortable beds. The room has a small fridge but no microwave which is a bit strange as they do provide you with several sets of plates and silverware. They also provide tea, coffee, milk, sugar, and tea biscuits which is a nice touch. The room and bathroom (with a shower and tub) were clean and inviting. Unfortunately Durban is experiencing daily load shedding. The hotel was good about telling us when this would take place (8-10pm one night and 8-10am the next morning) but Quarters either doesn't have a generator (which would be surprising for an established hotel) or didn't want to use it for just a handful of guests. We noticed that another popular hotel up the street (the Benjamin) was using a generator. We ended up going to a bar on Florida Road one night just to be in a place with power/electricity which wasn't the best choice for our tired eight-year old. We also had problems with the in-room safe which malfunctioned after we put our electronic inside. The general manager was able to open it the next morning before our departure. In short, Quarters is really trying to maintain its high standards of service during a very difficult time, but perhaps not to great success. I look forward to staying again under better circumstances.

Dear Mrs Hamelin Thank you for your feedback. I agree that it is a difficult time in our industry and with this in mind, we acknowledge your comments regarding your stay with us. We are governed in our Protocols by the Government and Tourism Board and it is therefore quiet stringent so as to ensure the utmost safety of our guests and staff on the property. Should you have received the Protocol Pack, Covid form and ID request, timeously, from your agent, which was sent to her on the 24th February, it would have answered most of your questions prior to arrival at the hotel. We hope to welcome you back to Quarters in the future where we have a more relaxed environment in which to host you and your family. Take Care Kind Regards Farhana

Writing this review from the elegantly set breakfast room at the Quarters hotel after a two night stay. Every single staff member went out of their way to make my stay pleasant from the security guard to the front desk staff. Bonnie the lady at the breakfast area was especially accommodating and wonderful. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the shower was fantastic. The breakfast far exceeded my expectations. This hotel is real value with five star service that you would get a posh hotel like the Vineyard in Cape Town or the Saxon in Johannesburg for the fraction of the price. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

We started our SA holiday here in order to catch the (rained off) cricket. This is a lovely colonial hotel set in the "posh" bit of Durban. The staff were fantastic, particularly Ryan, who went out of his way to offer advice on things to do and see, order transport and provide a packed breakfast for our 4:30am departure. The hotel is next to a busy road but this didn't trouble us. If you're in town for a couple of days, this is a fine base to explore from.

The new management has returned this boutique establishment back to its previous exceptional standards. Rooms are better than simply comfortable; beds are exactly correct and the restaurant is transformed - for all three meals of the day. Kelly & her team are aware of their guests’ every particular whim and ensure that needs are met, sometimes even before the guest is able to ask. Outstanding service is quietly delivered by all staff making one continually thinking : ‘I want to return’ !

This was my second stay at Quarters, and I’d certainly return if I have the good fortune of getting back to Durban. The room is spacious and well appointed, the staff wonderful in every way (they even did some much-needed laundry on a Sunday, when normally they have no Sunday service). The breakfast is wonderful, and the French-press coffee – still served a dozen years after my first visit – remains excellent. Add to that the convenience of Florida Road with its great range of reasonably priced restaurants, and Quarters is the place to which I’d send anyone going to Durban. I should note, by the way, that we’d take Quarters any day over the $700-a-night hotel in which we stayed just before coming to Durban.

A lovely, well-run boutique hotel, Quarters combines modern amenities with classic elegance. We had a large upstairs corner room with balcony, which was perfect for late afternoon reading. Florida is brimming with activity, and Mitchell Park up the hill is a lovely respite. On our brief visit, we arrived jet-lagged after a long trip from the US, and were early for check-in. Kelly and the rest of the Quarters staff treated us warmly and graciously while our room was made up, and service throughout our visit was uniformly excellent. We also chose to stay in for dinner, which was another great choice, as the in-house restaurant serves terrific food at reasonable prices. The breakfast and buffet were also excellent. Durban has plenty of hotel and resort options, but for a warm, charming and far more personal stay, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better choice than Quarters. It would certainly be our top choice should we return.
