The Protea Hilton is in a great location just off the N3 highway in the middle of the Midlands region. A short drive to Pietermaritzburg and about an hour to Durban. It is a cozy place to spend a night traveling or exploring the numerous attractions in the Midlands. As I forgot my US/SA adapter in Joburg, I really appreciated...

What a shame this hotel has lost its charm. In the glory days, this Tudor-styled establishment was the favoured spot for excellent dining, great accommodation and good hospitality. Now, on a recent trip to South Africa, my husband and I decided to spend a night en route to Durban. We arrived in the early evening and were shown our room...

I visited the Protea Hilton while on business in Pietermaritzburg. A hotel with a bit of old world charm. I found the staff friendly and willing to help. The room I had was spacious, warm and comforting with a nice shower- after a long day of meetings there is nothing better than a good shower and a comfortable bed. This...

I stayed at Protea Hilton for business on the 23rd of November 2016. I arrived on a wet, misty evening. In the hotel receptio, a crackling, warm woodfire, welcomed me. The hotel staff are amazing, friendly and extremely helpful. My hotel room took my breath away. Real old world charm with modern finishings. Just the look and feel made me...

Victorian style rooms and furniture. Massive shower and separate bath tub. Asked for a fridge in my room but apparently they don't have any. Staff was happy to provide with as much ice as and when I needed it.

Staying at this hotel is like stepping back into time. Beautifully proportioned rooms, reception area with a burning fire and an ambience that can only be described as timeless. The service is really good and their diningroom is very sophisticated. The menu is really something else. Unusual and very tasty. They probably have one of the best breakfast spreads I...

I have stayed here a few times already. I insist on staying in the newer section as the older section battles to supply hot water as my colleague experienced now again. I had to request a room change at check in as they ignored my new section request when the booking was made. So I ended up with 2 sgl...

An older hotel that has been expanded, rooms are comfortable and generous but lighting is insufficient particularly for putting on make up. Plenty of stairs and narrow staircases. Great historical displays in the halls. We didn't have breakfast at R185 each, too expensive. There was confusion when I checked out, I was told its all good to go but now...
