In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you!

I recently had two separate stays at Derwent House, and would highly recommend. I appreciated the security guard outside the front at all times, and great location, within a short (safe) walk to many restaurants and very convenient to the major Cape Town attractions, all a short

Dear jat309, It was such a pleasure hosting you both for your two visits, and we're delighted that everything was to your satisfaction. Safety and security of our guests is paramount, so it's great to have your feedback that the measures we've put in place in this regard gave you comfort and confidence. Our complimentary handy smartphone is really also a great tool in this regard, making communication in any situation so much easier. Indeed, our central location is hard to beat, just at the base of Table Mountain, a short walk from the restaurants, boutiques, cafes and other attractions of trendy Kloof Street and just a short Uber trip from all the main sites and attractions of Cape Town . . . You two certainly made the most of your time with us, seeing everything there was to see! As for breakfast, yes, we take it very seriously and it seems to be a highlight for many guests: so pleased that you enjoyed the local Franschhoek trout with scrambled eggs--it's definitely a top-seller among our breakfast options. And our pastry team are revelling in all the great guest feedback: there'll be lots of new cakes and tarts to try on your next visit 😊 . . . Thank you kindly for taking the time to share your experience with us in this forum. It's much appreciated and really helpful as well. We look forward to welcoming you back again on a future visit to Cape Town! From all of us, warm greetings from Derwent House, Anahid & the team

From the first contact with the hotel whilst booking, to the moment we left, there was not a single reason for us to suggest the Derwent House’s rating was not fully justified. This is an outstanding hotel; there is no aspect that we could fault. The interior displays the confide

No worries, ZYXWVUTS: promise we'll make sure there's a room for you next time! We'll be waiting for you . . . Thank you so much for this generous endorsement -- and filling up the hotel with family and friends, along the way! It was a pleasure to help with your restaurant bookings and requests -- and hope that our recommendations all fit the bill. I know from Julia that you loved the special dining experience she provides at Reverie: I'm so pleased that this was a hit with your gang. Many thanks also for your lovely compliment on the house: as de-facto "designer-in-chief," I'm particularly chuffed -- as are our wonderful team, for your kind shout-out on their warmth and professionalism. We know how fortunate we are and are incredibly proud of everyone, so it's really motivating to have public recognition like yours. I'm so sorry we didn't manage to cross paths during your stay, and look forward to your return visit to make amends for that. Just let us know when you're coming! Warm greetings from everyone at Derwent House, Anahid

Stayed here for five days. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful throughout. When we were sorting our holiday we could not decide between VA at waterfront or Derwent House. So glad we chose this area. Brilliantly located for restaurants and bats and felt safe to walk arou

Dear adnyl444, It's great to hear that you didn't regret not staying at the Waterfront: you've really hit the nail on the head in describing the location. No doubt that it's a great asset to the city and fun to visit, but if you want to experience Cape Town like a local as you did, it's hard to beat our address . . . (Not to mention proximity to great restaurants like the Black Sheep, Janse, Kloof Street House and Thali). On behalf of the team, thanks so much for your kind words -- we really hope that we made your Cape Town stay memorable. As for the pool, you have my sincere apologies once again that we could not open it during your stay. The drought has had a devastating effect on us and many properties have closed their swimming pools entirely as a result. We have made the decision to try and continue to keep it operational by purchasing recycled grey water to keep it topped up and combat evaporation (since we are not permitted to refill with municipal water). But this is a complex operation and a new water delivery, combined with a sudden heat wave like that during your stay, often demands heavy chemical remediation which can render it unsuitable for swimming for a few days. Unfortunately, this occurred during your visit--almost exactly to the day: it is now sparkling clean and clear again. I am so sorry that you were inconvenienced by this and regret that it spoiled your otherwise enjoyable stay. Sadly, it looks increasingly likely that water scarcity will become the new "normal," so we take your feedback very seriously. Thanks so much for your recommendation: we really appreciate it and so do other travellers. Hope to see you back at Derwent House again one day! On behalf of the entire team, many thanks again, Luca

On arrival at Derwent House we found a bottle of fizz, a 'congratulations' banner, balloons AND confetti in our room, to celebrate the first stop on our honeymoon. And this says it all really - the staff here are so incredibly thoughtful.

Thank you, Rhian G, for sharing your honeymoon experience at Derwent House with other travellers--they really appreciate it, and so do we! Congratulations again to you both! We loved hosting you for this very special occasion and are just delighted that we helped make it special and memorable for you. Yes, we've found that hot soup, a cosy fireplace and warming beverage all help to take the edge off those late spring chilly evenings . . . And definitely happy to share our tips for seeing the town and--most imnportantly: the best eating and drinking in town (because a honeymoon is no time to make the wrong restaurant choice )--just glad that we were able to get you in. Sadly, our honey butter supplier doesn't deliver to the UK, but we located a recipe from Alton Brown on the Food network and Florence tested it for you -- it's not far off; TripAdvisor won't let me post the web link here, but I've sent it to your e-mail address. Enjoy: may it bring back happy memories!! We'll be looking forward to welcoming you back for an anniversary -- but will be sure to look after any friends or family you send our way in the meantime. Thank you again for your lovely recommendation, and from all of us, warm greetings from Cape Town, Anahid & the Derwent team

Have you ever had a problem with bed bugs. I am not a fan of the beast.
No bed bugs -- promise . . . They are not an issue in South Africa in general.

My husband and I prefer either a king-size bed or 2 twin beds. Do you have either option available in your rooms? Thanks.
Just ask to make sure. We had a King/twin.

During the water shortage, are guests allowed to use the pool?
Hi Senallure, yes, so far, we are still able to keep the pool open for use!

How is this hotel handling the water shortage?
We are asking all guests to support our conservation efforts and observe the city's water use guidelines while staying with us. We launder linen less often, recycle grey water throughout the property and have installed water storage systems. Our pool is still operating for now, but kept covered during the hottest part of the day to minimise evaporation . . . We (and our great guests!!) have reduced consumption substantially over last year, meeting all targets. Hope this answers your questions? Anahid
