Cuevas de Las Manos is a very interesting place to visit driving on Ruta 40. The site is fantastic with paintings (mostly left hands, but also guanacos, lesser rheas, cougars and hunters) dating back to 9000 years B.C. (and probably even 13.000 B.C., questioning the dating of the first transit of Bering till now accepted as 17000 BC). The visit...

Staying in the Hosteria allowed us to have one of our best 4-wheel drive and hiking trip in Patagonia. As a guest, you can drive your own car on a 12-kms private road to access the trail to go to the Cueva de Las Manos. The landscape was beautiful, the trek perfect and we were all alone. The real reason,...

The stay here (in 2013) was really exciting for us as it allowed the best approach to the cueva, a good nights sleep then drive to a fantastic walk across the valley to the cueva on the other side. This was one of the best things I did on the trip, this walk - and the hostel as the base...

This is a very basic hotel. Only one hour electricity during diner. Rooms are poor. People friendly and helpful. So bring a torch with you to use in the little bathroom. Food and beverage is ok. Hotel well situated to visit the caves. It's very quiet and very Patagonia.

Wanting to see the remote UNESCO site Cuevas de las Manos, in Patagonian Argentina, we had to find a place to stay. The choices were one of several down-at-the-heel hotel in the small town of Perito Moreno, 60 kms away, or Estancia Cuevas de las Manos, close by the Cuevas site. Until recently, this was a working estancia, or ranch....

This is still a working estancia but the owners no longer live here. The estancia now has a common den area, lobby and dining area, and about 15 rooms. My room was very clean and comfortable and had obviously been recently renovated. There is no central heating but they will light a register for you if you feel cold. It...

This hotel is not located where Google Maps places it (not near Cueva de las Manos). You need to drive 70km North on Ruta 40 from Bajo Caracoles, then take a right-turn on a gravel road for 5 more km. You can access Cueva des las Manos via a down and up hike (<1h) from the carpark located on top...

After five weeks in South America this was by far the worst place and food we came across. The room is run down, dark (light only for a few hours from 8 pm on) and we could only take a cold shower, as there was no gas for water heating (the tank was empty and it seem too expensive to...

It is a 100.000 acre working ranch (cows & horses) but leased to local entrepreneur who takes good care but does not have big money to invest in the high maintenance it needed! Room are very basic and not perfect at all with quite strong sewage smell but taking into account that BAJO CARACOLES accommodation is even worse and more...

This estancia is located 60 KM south of the city of Perito Moreno in quite a remote area. Access from routa 40 is about 6 KM on a easy to navigate dirt road. The rooms are functional to frugal. Bathrooms are large. We were there when it was still cooling down over night and the little wall heater was barely...
