Detailed Reviews
Getting to the property is a “wet landing”, meaning your lower legs and feet will get wet boarding the transport boat. Wear appropriate shoes and pants. The ride is very short. The welcome reception with cocktail is nice and you won’t have to carry your own bags to your room. As you probably heard there are steps getting to the rooms. It’s not as bad as some folks say and there are areas where you can take a break, if necessary, on your journey to your room. The rooms are very nice although some room locations are better than others and some of the rooms have adjoining walls. We had room #2 but #1, the other half of our duplex, had a better view and had direct ocean breeze access. Our view of any water was obscured by plant growth that could/should be easily cut back to open the view up. Ceiling and floor fans will help keep you cool – it was hot (nice break from the snow) in February.
The meals were very good – they give you choices of entrees so your diet can most likely be accommodated. The picnic style seating is actually very nice as it “forces” interaction with others. We met people from all over the world. You get to listen to their adventures and maybe make new friends in the process.
I thought the alcoholic drinks were reasonably priced for Costa Rica. $5 for a premium beer was fair. You could walk to town, about 20 minutes (part of it along the beach), where there are two markets if you want to stock up on cheaper alcohol. Small fridge in the room keeps it cold.
The day trips are all worth it (they all actually get back to the property by at last 2PM so they are not “all” day trips). We did the snorkeling, mangrove tour and the Corcovado hike. All of the guides were knowledgeable and friendly. Saw very diverse wildlife on each trip. On the boat ride out to Cano Island for snorkeling we saw two humpback whales as well as some jumping dolphins. Nice! You can’t go wrong with any of these trips.
As mentioned, nice property and friendly employees. Good choice if you plan on travelling to the Drake Bay area.

Thanks Steve, for the nice review and nice words. We all where glad you stopped by and enjoyed Aguila’s hospitality. One of the reasons I have community seating is actually what you said you get to meet people from all over the planet and the special thing about it almost all everyone has something in common because you're all here to see nature at its finest from marine life, amazing life within the jungle. Thanks for the comment on the food also we do cater to everyone from vegetarians to vegans and anything in between. I have some good news Steve and future guests, we took your advice and clean up view in all the rooms, living in the jungle it doesn’t take long before your sounded by it. Like you said there are stairs and so many people mention it that, so I decide to count them. To the first rooms there are 70 stairs and to the next building there are 78. From There to the top 86. it’s not so bad considering such a great view of the bay and coastline. Once again Steve, thanks for stopping by, we hope we get to see you in the future. A group of us came from Florida, thanks to recent travel restrictions lifted had no problem (everyone can visit Costa Rica now). We had a rental car that we parked at their gated lot in Sierpe (super easy and secure) and took the shuttle boat from there to the resort, nice little scenic boat ride, dock to dock and they help with bags etc. We were greeted by staff and the owner Bradd (who is wonderful) kindly and while our bags were carried to our room enjoyed orientation in the beautiful dining/common area with a tropical drink. Everyone was masked up from the boat to the resort and the tours, we wore a mask to the table, cleaned our feet and sanitized our hands (all available) every time we were in common area, and guests and tabels were spaced out, so felt completely safe as far as covid goes, definitely more so than in our home of Florida. Every meal was amazing, fresh fish, fruit, choices. We enjoyed a breakfast, lunch, appetizer and dinner every day. Our room was beautiful, overlooking the forest and bay behind us, large patio with hammocks to relax, very clean cozy and charming. We did two days of diving off Cano island, only a short boat ride from the resort, and our guide was great, saw tons of sea life both days and not a lot of traffic out there so very personal (so don't hesitate to go now before the whole world gets back to traveling). We also did a rainforest tour in the massive Corcovado park, also a short scenic boat ride from the resort. In just a few hours we saw, monkeys, wild boar, exotic birds, cayman and much more. All of the tours can be arranged from the resort and leave from the resort. We just spent 3 nights as we were hopping around but you could easily spend a week here and take many tours or just relax. One of our party had visited before and the rest of us will definitely be back. This is not a typical chain resort experience, this is a really personal exotic and special place, deep in nature but with first class accomodations (and there were other guests to mingle with if you like, and also a little town nearby within walking distance). Covid or not I highly recommend visiting Aguila de Osa!

We spent 4 days here in late February. Any negative reviews seen here are completely unjustified. From the pick up by boat from Sierpe to welcome cocktail it was a lovely start. All the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. My husband managed to get some diving done as there were some others diving - we had a breathtaking experience with 2 dancing manta rays.
The rooms are beautiful and the fans do indeed keep you cool at night as it’s VERY hot. Yes there are many steps up to all the rooms but generally you are in the shade so if you are any sort of fit, it’s not a problem. And the lovely staff take your cases up and down to your room.
The food was completely delicious ( and no chance at all to get hungry! ) and although you have to make your dinner selection at lunchtime it’s not a problem . Alcohol was a bit expensive but as the food is included .....We enjoyed the communal dining and hearing about other people’s trips.
Lots of wildlife to see and waking up with the dawn and birdsong was beautiful. On our last night the white faced monkey troupe put on a late afternoon show , jumping off the roof of the next room into the bushes - hilarious!
This was the best part of our trip to Costa Rica- thank you Aguila de Osa!

Other reviews have you covered on the excellence of the location and the calibre of the staff; the waiters in particular are of the highest standard. A few observations then. As noted elsewhere, do not underestimate the challenge of the steps to your cavernous room, although the Herculean boat team carry your luggage up effortlessly. Forget any hope of privacy though, as the gorgeous suites are entirely porous and your neighbours likely to be irritatingly loud - a more comprehensive initial briefing may also be required to drive home to the obstinate that there is no smoking permitted, a point our neighbours wilfully ignored. Would be good to impress the point to people about staying quiet too.
Consider carefully whether you wish to have to mingle with your fellow guests at every meal on your holiday, owing to the communal seating: this is fundamental to the ethos of the hotel, which must be respected, but may not be to everyone’s taste. It was certainly not to ours. This is a gastronomic experience too, with three fabulously crafted meals presented daily by a high quality kitchen as well as fresh cookies on tap and imaginative hors d’oeuvres before dinner, so be wary of your digestive capacity. Two gorgeous resident dogs are a delight, the tour guides are wonderful and the information provided and coordination of arrangements exemplary. Serious eco credentials on display, and this operation deserves its esteemed reputation.

This hotel is in a lovely location, there was a long walk directly from the hotel, kayaks for us to paddle the river and coast. The guided trips were really good, the guides extremely knowledgeable and also very caring, especially Abraham on the trip to the island. Whilst snorkelling he really helped my husband, who has Parkinson’s, to enable him so see the manta rays. The food was all extremely fresh and very good. The standard bedroom could do with an update in the bathroom. We had a few issues, which were addressed but shouldn’t have happened. Air conditioning would have been useful as it was extremely hot and humid, however I do appreciate that this is an eco hotel, so probably not applicable. The surroundings enable one to observe birds really easily, and also the occasional monkey. Overall great. The reason it wasn’t given 5 stars was the room. A note of caution the steps up to the room are quite steep -75 to ours, so you need to be relatively fit.

For the adventurous and nature lovers: This eco-lodge is a hidden gem. If you are seeking a full immersion experience in the jungle and the ocean, coupled with safety, excellent service, amazing local food, cleanliness, and highly experienced guides, this is the lodge for you and your family. The lodge and 'cabins' are fantastic with lots of ventilation, fans, open decks, and clean sheets. The bathrooms have lots of hot water and the food is simply fantastic, with fresh local cuisine., and a highly creative chef. The lodge has 3 managers on staff who can take care of all the planning and your tours and needs. They are friendly, highly organized, and very efficient. I would highly recommend the jungle tour at Serena (more wild life), the snorkeling tour at Cano Island, and the Mangrove tour. You can also kayak on the river with crocodiles right outside the lodge with the kayaks they provide. They can also organize a full or half day fishing trips, and our kids caught huge red snappers, tuna, and sword fish. The chef was amazing and whipped up fresh ahi poke and a snapper dish that was divine. The wild life (visual and audio) that you will experience is unimaginable with iguanas and butterflies all around you. You will wake up to the cacophony of eagles, toucans, macaws, and a variety of birds, and the ocean. The guides and boat captains are highly experienced, knowledgeable, and safe, and I highly recommend them. The owner, Brad, is an inspiring person and will share his life journey and passion, and non-profit for jaguars, with you at the meals. Overall, one of the most exhilarating, nature-immersion, adventurous, and enjoyable trips we have had and Aguila De Osa is very highly recommended for couples, solos, and families.

What a fabulous trip to the Osa Peninsula! The resort is quite a way from the major tourist area but very easy to get to if you take a domestic flight from San Jose to Drake Bay. It was a very short flight and then about a 20 minute drive to the beach where you take a short 10 minute boat ride to the resort. I got there in the morning and had the whole day to explore. The bungalows go up the side of the hill and have amazing views. From the private balcony I saw hummingbirds in the bushes and scarlet macaws flying overhead. There's a trail you can follow over a hanging bridge that takes you to a secluded beach that's just beautiful. On the way back I saw so many monkeys! They were crossing the bridge and jumping in the trees. If you like nature this is absolutely the part of Costa Rica you have to see! The staff at Aguilia de Osa were extremely friendly and went out of their way to help guests with whatever they needed. The tours there were excellent with very knowledgeable guides. The food was exceptional and they always had great choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is no air conditioning, but I honestly didn't think it was a big deal. There were big screened window and at night with the nice breeze I even ended up turning the ceiling fan off. Such a wonder place to relax and take in all the beautiful scenery.

Yes, we are a little off the beaten path and we love it that way Elizabeth, but you found us in our little paradise here in Drake Bay, we thank you for all your kind remarks on the hotel and staff it’s much appreciated. As you witnessed there’s a lot to see here not just in the rainforest there also so much to see in marine life also, We, also realize when we are traveling to different parts of the world on your vacation is to experience the food. So, thanks so much for the comments on our food we really try to outdo ourselves there is to give you the freshest, tastiest, and authentic cuisine as possible. just because where in the jungle doesn’t mean we can’t deliver great food. I hope all went well when you left a day later, and you made your flights back home safe and sound. Again, thanks for stopping by stay safe.

This is a wonderful small occupancy boutique resort. We stayed for 4 nights, 3 days. The hotel helped us from the planning stages. They helped book our national flight from San Jose to Drake Bay on Sansa (they even helped rebook the national flights after American Airlines changed our international flights), scheduled the taxi to the beach, and boat to the hotel. We were greeted with a smile and a welcome drink as we checked in. Nancy walked us through the schedule for our activities that we planned while the porters took our luggage up the 76 stairs to our room. Lunch and dinner are planned at the previous meal where you have usually 3 different options, all wonderful and made with local products. Meals are held in a great outdoor room where you are encouraged to mix with other guests and overlook the bay while looking at different wildlife and beautifully manicured gardens from your seat. Our room was lovely with a spectacular view where we saw many different species of birds right from the hammock (room 12). Capuchin monkeys ran across the roof in the morning providing a natural wake up call around dawn. We did two tours; a snorkeling trip around Caño Island and a great hike through Corcovado. We also did an afternoon bird watching tour and a night tour. The staff was extremely friendly and very helpful. I had dropped $60 while starting a hike and when we came back they figured out it was mine. Some things to note is that there are a lot of stairs to get to your room. All the windows in the rooms are just screens and you only have fans to keep you cool, it was fine for us. I think air conditioning would change the feel of the place and ruin the peaceful sounds of the jungle.

The minute the boat turned from the ocean up the river to Aguila de Osa’s dock, surrounded by jungle, and our host Nancy came down to welcome us, I felt at home, that this was a special place. I had flown from San Jose to Drake Bay in an 11 passenger plane. Before I was out of the tiny airport, my luggage had been put in the back of an extended cab pickup truck and I was told to get in, along with the other passengers from our flight. We were driven about 45 minutes through farm land, jungle and through a few small rivers to the beach where a boat was waiting in the surf. In the time it took me to take my shoes off and roll up my pants to wade onto the boat, my luggage was loaded and we were off. Five minutes later we arrived at the dock.
Nancy did an amazing job welcoming me, explaining what to expect in terms of meals and schedule, and asking in great detail about dietary needs. She radiated warmth, kindness and care. I was in a difficult place in my life and she somehow sensed that and went out of her way to care for me, while respecting my privacy. Her kindness was healing. Her wisdom and perspective set the tone for me to transition back to joy.
The location is absolutely amazing. To be in the jungle with capuchin monkeys running around, iguanas mating in the trees, Jesus Christ lizards with their Ministry of Silly Walks run, scarlet macaws eating in the almond trees…it’s an experience of a lifetime. The rooms are very comfortable, they all have views and outdoor seating and, although it was hot and rained a lot, I was very comfortable with just the ceiling fan. The food was delicious and happy hour at 6 was a great time to meet other guests and share adventure stories from the day.
The staff at Aguila de Osa are truly extraordinary. They are all very professional and efficient and at the same time, their work comes from their hearts. They all care very much that guests are happy and will joyfully do anything they can to help. Rudy, Enrique and Mini serve meals and run the bar delightfully. Nancy, Rebecca and Christina run the place impeccably- every detail is attended to and every interaction feels so attentive, like you are the only person in the world at that moment. They were very kind as I decided to extend my stay several days. They went above and beyond to help me, even booking me a room at a neighboring property the one night they were sold out. They model excellent management all while having fun, laughing and loving their work. I had a few heart-to-hearts with Rebecca and I can tell you, she is a wise, compassionate person. I had such an amazing time, I couldn’t bear to leave without planning a time to come back next Spring.

If you want air conditioned room and a candle lit dinner for two this isn't the place for you. But if you want great food, friendly staff you want you to feel at home and cater for all your needs including excellent rainforest and snorkelling/scuba trips, then this is perfect. The area is a total contrast to the over commercial Manuel Antonio which we visited before coming to Osa. Surely a stay in this beautiful area can't be bettered by staying anywhere else.

Hi Linda,
We usually tell people to go Cocolito Beach for a swim it's a fifteen minute walk from the hotel. It's a beautifull beach or if you like you can walk a little farther and find one of the deserted beach to take a swim. I hope this helps. If there any other questions please don't hesitate to cntact us. Looking forward to meeting you here in the the amazing Osa Peninsula. Bradd
Hi,
I appologize for taking so long to respond just saw your questions, As for not having AC we have big fans but really isn't that bad for humidity though it will be 70%. The reason for not having the AC is I really want people to enjoy the sounds of nature. From waves coming to shore, the birds, and the sounds of the jungle at night. As for fishing it's always good here I would stay away from full moon 4 or 5 before and after if possible. I hope this answers your questions and again I appologize for the delay take care and stay safe. Bradd
Hi Hobbiecat,
Unfortunately we have asked the providers of horse that they need insurance and a Certifcation from our Costa Rician Tourist board. They have failed to suppy this and due to these facturas we will not use them. We want our quest to be safe and until they make these requirements we are not selling horsseback. Sorry to say we hope you understand our reasoning.
Good morning Fran, things here are running as normal in paradise. Although the government has tightened restrictions in and around the capital, we are still functioning as normal here (besides our normal covid safety protocols). We still also have group dining and we are looking forward to hosting you when you arrive.
Saludos,
Greentique Family
