This really is a lovely place to stay. We needed to seek refuge from the storm, and they were very accommodating. Our room and facilities were clean. Spacious living room with a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. Very affordable stop on the Golden tour. We were looked after by Henrik, who was friendly and gave us lots of recommendations for our trip. Would definitely recommend this place. Thank you!
Beautiful views and an excellent location for touring the Golden Circle. Our room was clean and had a private bathroom with a shower. The owners treated us like friends and made us feel welcome. Thor's lamb stew was our favorite of all the stews we tried in Iceland. We enjoyed eating it while watching the Italy/England football game. Such a fun introduction to the area! Of all the places we stayed in Iceland, this was our favorite and we can't wait to go back.
This is a fantastic hostel with hosts (new on April 2021) that are very friendly and welcoming and really went above and beyond. So much so that our stay has been a real highlight to our Iceland visit and that is saying something when you consider how amazing the sights and landscapes have been. The food they provided our group (19 people from UK on a 5 day winter trekking adventure) was simply amazing! Plentiful, varied and totally delicious. Thank you so much for the wonderful stay and best of luck with your new venture running the hostel, you really are doind a faultless job. Rob (Discover Adventure guide)
From the moment we arrived, we had a warm and welcoming arrival, the hosts couldn’t do enough for us and the food they prepared for us at all mealtimes was delicious and varied. The rooms and facilities were spotlessly clean. It had a lovely, cosy, homely feel, thoroughly recommend.
Walked in here for a one night stay. The owner and his family were very nice and accommodating because a 50 person school group was staying too. Like genuinely wanted to make sure other guests weren’t too disturbed. Views over the lake are incredible in good weather and beds are comfortable. Bathroom can be a bit tight. Small kitchen on my floor too which was nice when I had to store stuff and grab it. As is typical with Iceland, there is no sound insulation so you hear literally everything. But, I would definitely stay here again.
This place promises so much but could easily be much better. It is a large place, but by all accounts (talking to the owner) most of the rooms (not quite all) have private shower /toilet The room was smallish but just about OK. Bed layout though made operating the curtains difficult without moving beds backwards and forwards from the wall. Adequate electric sockets (something we have had problems with elsewhere) and nice to have an opening window. But felt the WiFi was a bit slow and flaky compared with other places stayed at Kitchen just about adequate whilst we were there, but don't know how it would cope if all rooms were full - there weren't many staying when we were there. Some finishing touches could make things so much better - better towels for one thing. These were about as poor as they get - bedding /duvet was a bit light and short - pillows unsubstantial - several lights not working. Only 1 of of 3 of our room ceiling lights worked ; only 1 ceiling light in the kitchen worked - no light in the fridge, looked like it could do with a clean and defrost and we threw away several items that were well put off date - felt a bit strange finding ourselves sharing the dining/common area with the owner family using it also. Couldn't feel comfortable finding whether the common area TV could get BBC for example Apparently the owners, New since earlier this year we believe, are trying to decide whether to run it long term as a hostel, guesthouse or hotel. They would like to have the common area as a restaurant. Nicely placed for a 10 minute walk to the local geothermal baths. Deserves to work out for the new owners, but could still improve things in the short term…
We stayed here after our car broke down,so didn't originally plan to stay here, but we are all very happy that we did. The owner is super friendly and really went out of her way to make us feel at home. The place is very clean and comfortable and excellent value for money. Highly recommended!
Long review warning! I wanted my daughter to experience European hostels but not quite the rented bunk in a giant room type. We were traveling with one of my old friends so we booked a triple - three twin rooms, with private bath. Room was just big enough for us. Comfortable and we happened to have a lake view. Plenty of kitchens and good common space. We went down to the little bar / dining room / game room after supper and I was so pleased with what happened next. Of course this changes night to night and is not in control of the property. We met several exchange students, all from China but currently studying in various European countries to met up in Iceland for their spring break and were traveling together. They were an amazing mix of people. Also we met two single grown women who were traveling independently. One was a flight attendant based in London and the other a South American lady who had recently injured her wrist but still flew to Iceland and was driving herself around the country in a rental car. These eight diverse people gave my daughter exactly what you might hope for with a hostel - very nice, fascinating mix of internationals to spend an hour with around the piano. Just very relaxed, friendly conversation with lots of smiles and laughter. And, oh yeah, they were all just as interested in us and our story as well, because to them, we are the diversity! All of this and we still had the privacy of a locked bedroom and our own bathroom, not too much of an adjustment from a US standard expectation for overnight accommodations. We were fortunate it all worked out so well. I really love the mix of a hostel social atmosphere with a private bedroom. Also everything was nice and clean, well run and well maintained establishment. It was off season and the hostel was perhaps half full or maybe a little less but seemed to have ample facilities to handle its max crowd, which couldn't be too huge based on the size of the building. Not the cheapest hostel in the world but a very, very solid value for a reasonable price. Parking in front right outside the main door.…
We had a lovely room with windows that open and well heated at the Laugarvatn Hostel. While the room was rather small we were thrilled to get our own bathroom with shower even though our expectation was we would not. We also had access to a kitchen down the hallway with a table to eat food which was nice. The room also had a great lake view which was the icing on the cake ! Overall, we felt for the price that you could not beat this place. Also, the wifi was perfect which is often times a challenge at these places. What a nice way to spend our first night in Iceland !
We stayed here on our first night in Iceland; it being our first full day in Iceland we underestimated the amount of time we'd spend exploring the many things on our list of things to see and do....so we were running late, but thankfully our very patient and gracious front desk clerk waited for us to arrive (we hustled and managed to arrive just 2 minutes late). Our room was clean, beds were comfy, we had our own private bathroom and the shower had amazing water pressure, affordable, the hostel was centrally located to major attractions nearby, easy to find, lots of common area kitchen space.....truly a great facility! Thank you again, so much, for your kindness in waiting for our arrival.
