The Manor Hotel comes highly recommended for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, amplified by festive decorations and a pet-friendly approach. According to guests, the rooms are spacious, clean, and feature modern updates, but there's a suggestion that certain areas could benefit from further renovation. While the cleanliness of the rooms receives consistent praise, opinions on the hotel's value are divided, with some finding it reasonable and others questioning the cost relative to quality and service. Service is generally lauded for the staff's friendliness, though there are occasional reports of slow service and varying meal quality. The amenities, including the dining experience, are appreciated, yet some reviewers suggest the spa and pool areas could use enhancements.

A lovely quiet and scenic position for a hotel. Large clean room and good bedding , shower room adequate but would benefit from having a shelf. Excellent lighting in the room. Breakfast menu good, dinner menu quite ambitious but limiting if staying more than 2 nights and if allergic to mussels or are vegetarian/vegan. A little too much salt in some dishes. Number of choices on starter and mains better than for desserts and a wafer or biscuit with the ice cream would have been good.

Staff very pleasant, friendly and all seemed able to turn their hands to other tasks as required , sometimes to the detriment of their primary role. There did not seem to be any management at the hotel but the willingness of the staff enabled the hotel to operate. Unfortunately it also meant that staff had to leave the bar/ dining room / reception unstaffed for long periods. Understaffed and under - managed.

Can't fault this hotel from start to finish. It's totally dog friendly, we were able to take our little pooch with us to afternoon tea, dinner and breakfast. Please be assured, however, if you are dog free, you are seated in the proper dining area, we were sat in the lounge. They accommodated our request to watch the rugby on Saturday too. Reception staff were really friendly when we arrived and we were lucky to be able to check in early. The ladies also helped us upstairs with some of our luggage. Afternoon tea was amazing and you can pay a supplement to have some extra savories which was ideal for my husband as I'm the one with a sweet tooth. Dinner was included in our deal and this didn't disappoint either, three delicious courses, my favourite being the dessert - wild berry pavlova cheesecake. The Head Chef (Grant) really knows his stuff and will do all he can to accommodate any special requests where possible. Our double room had a lovely big bed that was very comfortable. We had a dog friendly room which was spotless both in the room and the bathroom. The only slight downside was that our room (number 6) was above the main function room and there was a party there. The live band (who were actually very good and played a great choice of rock songs) finished about 11pm and until then, it was very loud, even with the windows closed. The party carried on after this but we could hardly hear the disco music, to be fair, and that finished at 12am. When you book, it might be worth checking whether there is a function on during your stay (unless your attending of course!). I was still full from the previous night so didn't have room for a full English breakfast but did have some delicious fresh fruit and eggs royale which were perfectly cooked - runny yolk but not a gooey white, can't stand that.

I would definitely recommend staying and dining here and I'm sure we'll visit again. Thanks to all the staff for looking after us so well but most of all to chef Grant for filling our bellies with such delicious food.

The staff were all extremely friendly and hard working. Dogs are not only allowed but welcomed and treats and water for them in the lounge. Restaurant lets the hotel down though I was told sunday lunch was very good, my food was average and had to be sent back. Need to have staff training as had a chip fire and someone tried to put it out with water! Rooms are a good size with wood flooring for ease of cleaning for dog available rooms. Would stay again as beautiful location and nice grounds and facilities

Just had a three night stay as part of a twenty person group from our classic car club on a pre booked dinner, bed and breakfast basis. We used the hotel as our local base for drives and events in the area, returning each day for meals and accommodation.
Whilst the hotel is nicely situated and in reasonably good repair, the catering service let it down badly. We had a fixed price dinner menu, with a selection across three courses each evening.
Unfortunately the standard of the meals lacked consistency in quality, temperature, efficiency of service delivery, portion sizes and presentation. Despite booking the stay in September 2023, they were clearly unprepared/understaffed to meet our needs as well as other guests. The waiting staff struggled to deliver the correct food to people, it was often cold and delivered in a slap-dash manner.
Breakfasts were invariably served late with waiting times up to an hour, with wrong or forgotten items, leading to further delays. A simple breakfast order of bacon and toast took an hour to arrive - toast uncooked and two frazzled slices of bacon on top - inedible.
The overworked staff tried their hardest, but management should have organised extra help.
To think this hotel caters for wedding and other functions, I was surprised and very disappointed with service levels.
I would find it difficult to recommend the venue to anyone.

We stayed for a short break and can't really find anything positive to say about the stay. We were told they had a spa and it was newly opened having been updated, this was the reason we booked this place. We were disappointed with the cramped gym and although equipment was new it was of low quality and not high tech like other gyms. My boyfriend and I stood about waiting to use some of the equipment and it was over crowded with just about 6 people in there! The worst thing though was the pool and wet areas, these were so poor and very very dirty. The pool was tiny and the water looked murky, there were dirty footprints around the side of the pool. The jacuzzi didn't seem to work. The changing rooms were swimming in water so your clothes got wet when trying to change and the showers were really filthy. The shower mats are disgusting and clearly have not been cleaned for ages. It was a real health hazard and my boyfriend said the mens changing rooms were not much better with mud on the floors! There were far too many people in the space so it was awful and and not relaxing, children not supervised.
The hotel itself is very dated in parts, our room was basic but just about ok. The public rooms were ok but not great. Food ok but nothing special, better places available locally. Some families were staying so it was a bit noisy at times.
On the whole on reflection we wished we had stayed somewhere else as it felt a waste of money and time. we will give it a one star score for the location but the hotel itself doesn't deserve any scores it was in much need for money being spent on it and the spa needs a deep clean.

Response from Ollie Ollie, Other at The Manor Hotel
Responded 8 Mar 2024
Thank you for taking the time to submit a review . The Manor prides itself on being inclusive for families , unfortunately your visits coincided with half term and so the pool and facilities were very busy with families . Naturally this puts pressure on the changing rooms which can result in wetter floors than usual, they are cleaned regularly but if a couple of families have been in the changing room at similar times then I'm afraid that despite our best efforts they may be wetter than we would like . We are really pleased with our new gym and with 13 machines available and a weights and resistance area we are disappointed that you struggled with only 6 people using this facility, some machines are more popular than others . The Manor is a Grade 11 listed building with many period features and as such cannot be very modern , nor would we wish to loose the character that this gives us . It is disappointing to receive a poor review but we will look seriously at your concerns and see in which ways we can improve .

Having visited this hotel before as a couple (without a child) we were looking forward to visiting again with our daughter however whilst this hotel is good for couples, I wouldn’t recommend it for families/children.

Despite having a 2 year old, when we sat down for dinner we were sat at a table for two. It wasn’t until we requested a high chair, puzzled as to where our daughter was going to sit, was one provided. In addition, despite ordering something of the children’s menu, no placemat or cutlery were provided for her until we ask.

Another, mildly irritating point is that one of the deserts on the menu, advertised as “Melt in the middle Fondant” is in fact a GU Chocolate Melting Middle desert. A quick google will tell you these are approx. £2.50 for two however The Manor Hotel, adds a scoop of ice cream and sells them for £7.50 each (so 6x more than it costs them). We know that these are definitely GUs as we ordered Bread with Oil and Balsamic vinegar as a starter with our dinner and the glass dishs that the vinegar/oil came in and separately a serving of ketchup with our main, both had the GU logos on the side of them.

Lunchtime - Welsh Rarebit (cheese on toast), one slice of bread (photo attached) and they charged ÂŁ7. The prices they are charging for the quality and portions of food below the standard you would expect given the price.

The swimming pool is similar size to that of a children’s pool at a leisure centre however was cold, even for us as adults so unsurprisingly our daughter didn’t want to get in (despite absolutely loving swimming normally).

The rooms are a good size but again, despite having booked for 2 adults and an infant, there was only a double bed in the room, and only when we asked, was a bed provided for our daughter.

The staff appear to see guests as chore as the majority of them are fairly miserable and even the cleaner was specific as to when she was going to clean our room and despite being told she wanted to clean our room in 15 minutes and vacating within that time to go down and have a tea/coffee for an hour, we came back to our room an hour later to be told by the same cleaner that she hadn’t got round to doing it yet and so asked us to vacate it again.

This is all despite the hotel being aware that we were staying as a honeymoon following our wedding 2 days prior.

Whilst this review would appear primarily negative, I would recommend this hotel for couples that want to explore the Brecon Beacons, provided you use it as a base and don’t eat here. If you are family or have children with you, look else where as you will feel unwelcome here. If you are looking to eat out, there are plenty of pubs/restaurants in Crickhowell/Abergavenny which would be a more pleasant experience. A fine example would be the Nantyffin Cider Mill who are very welcoming to families, have a play area for children and a nice ambience especially if you go into the restaurant out back.

I'm so sorry to have to write this .
But I feel you must be told .

The photos you advertise are not true to date They where many years ago but certain now.

We have been loyal customer for years & years and loved all the functions etc .
But the last few visits have been really poor .

What has happened ??
It is totally run down and gone to look cheap and tacky ,very poor .
no table clothes sticky tables ,cheap plastic table mats,
No heating freezing cold .
Food was very average /poor atmosphere just grime & no staff on hardly .
Not to mention the pool /sauna just shut it down. Never felt so depressed it's nothing relaxing about it.
No heating freezing cold green water .
Nothing works .
No hot water .
No lights
Filthy changing facilities.
You can't advertise these photos and produce this rubbish it's false advertisement .
Absolutely saddens me to say after all theses years I think it's time we parted .
Unless the owners invest a lot of good taste & class back in to a once beautiful venue then I'm afraid I can't see this venue being open much longer .

Stayed here while in the area on business. Views from this hotel are outstanding, lovely views of the welsh countryside! Inside the place is very nice, a rustic feel with this being an older building. Rooms are nice with a few areas a bit rough around the edges. However was very clean and had a comfy bed. Used the leisure facilities while staying which were old to say the least. Gym equipment is worn out and in need of upgrading to more modern equipment and the pool is small but useable. The changing facilities are also dodgy with extremely slippy floors and very small. Also charging guests to use these on top of the room is a bit much considerabing whats on offer. Had dinner in resturant which was very nice! Had a fantastic nights sleep which helps aswell!. Breakfast was faultless, super. Overall, a great stay.

As a last minute substitute for a three night break, having discovered the other 'Dog Friendly" venue didn't allow dogs to stay; it was simply a room close to where we wanted to be. In my mind it was an older hotel, probably sticking dog-owners round the back near the bins; an after thought
The hotel is set in beautiful, copious garden and grounds; plenty of room for plenty of dogs to avoid or meet at their will; the whole business model is geared to including dogs and dog owners. Not an in your face "We love dogs" kind of way; but thoughtful facilitation of dog owners' home from home; making taking the dogs with you an absolute doddle.
It's not all about the dogs, they know how to look after people too! Every single member of staff I met and spoke to always had a smile, always offering to take some of the strain, and a 'can-do' attitude that is so rare these days. I never met the chef, but they must be happy in their work; it simply isn't possible to make food taste this good unless you're happy with your lot. Three breakfast and three evening dinners for the two of us and absolutely nothing to complain about, good sized portions, beautifully cooked and presented and so so tasty that would not be out of place in a Michelin badged venue.
The bed, a huge king size, and I know size isn't everything, but when you factor in the comfort factor, not just comfy to sit on, lounge on to watch TV, but for a full night's sleep; it is without doubt the comfiest hotel bed I have ever slept in. There, I've put it out there, The Best Bed winner!
A country hotel in the Brecon Beacons National Park with vistas across the rural Usk valley, with a friendly staff group always on hand to help or advise, not so thinly spread as to cause queues or delays; might sound an expensive way to spend your few days off; but not here, exceptional value, even the dog supplement is reflective of the additional work and maintenance they might cause, not the chance to make a quick one like so many competitors.
Fantastic value, gorgeous food, beautiful venue, quality furnishings and decor and the friendliest of staff this place has it all; it has a leisure suite as well; not that I had opportunity to make the most of, but if the rest of my experience is anything to go by, I have no doubt the pool and equipment will be of the highest standard.
A short three day stay and I could go on about all the things were positive, our experiences but I won't rattle on about the bird watching, the dark night sky, the calming quietness, the hypnotic fish in the large fish pond, the always friendly other customers (clearly victims of the staff's contagious friendliness) or the history of old country house.

My family and I, 7 people in total, all stayed at the Manor Hotel for one night from 22/11/2023.

Whilst staying at the hotel, we noticed a few things which were not good.
A male waiting staff had extremely bad body odour and that’s not what you want to be smelling when ordering in the restaurant.

We were not told on arrival to the hotel, that the menu had changed since booking the evening meal at the point of booking the hotel.

The quality of the food was not good, when we asked for an alternatives to the menu, we were offered two minute steaks, which were chewy and cold and the portion of chips was fit for a child.
When this was brought to the staff’s attention they offered another steak, which was quite confusing when at the point of ordering they stated that there was only two minute steaks available, so we sent the steak steaks back.

Another family member had beef and turkey dinner, the meats were both extremely hard to cut through which wither was to do with your cutlery may have been blunt or the meat itself.
We all went to bed hungry and disappointed.

In the morning for breakfast, there was no tomato ketchup.

The hotel had no atmosphere whatsoever, with it being Christmas time I expected better and we have stayed in Crickhowell for many years and this was the most disappointing stay ever.

I totally agree. There were three of us (couple and young son) and our wet towels were lying all around the room. So simple to install hooks or a towel rail... don't know why they haven't just done this!
