We spent a day al campo en la estancia la portena. Only one day however it looked like one week! We felt totally at home, chilling out, eating good food, horseriding and talking with Monica and all the nice other members of the estancia. We highly recommend you this place if you are looking for a break and getting a...

We stayed one day at the Estancia and were absolutely charmed by the beautiful estate as well as the kindness of our hosts Gonzalo and Catalina. We had the opportunity to ride in the countryside on the very kind horses of the estancia, we listened to live argentinian music and ate delicious asado with tasty home-made bread and rich Malbec...

There are no words to describe the amazing experience we had at this Estancia from the beginning to the end. Everyone from the animals, to the people working there, to the owner made our stay a remarkable and unforgettable one. Everything was perfect, from the delicious food to the dancing, singing, horse riding, and the nice walks at the Estancia....

We chose to visit the day of the annual gaucho festival in San Antonio. Alas, it rained the night before and while we were driving to San Antonio. The festival was canceled. Nevertheless, we spent the afternoon at the Estancia. We arrived along a main road north of San Antonio. We were met there by the gauchos and were driven...

Estancia La Portena is a great place to stay for some days. The gauchos teach you all you need to know to become a real gaucho. This together with great food, surroundings, lovely people and cute dogs makes this an experience to remember.

We were at Estancia la Portena for a "Country Day" in January 2016. The place is very nice - clean, well kept and managed with nice and helpful staff. Their Country Day includes many activities, out of which I liked the most the gaucho singing and dancing, asado (traditional barbecue) and horse-riding - which was adjusted to our needs and...

We booked our tour with Wander Tours. Chris picked us up bright and early and off we went. We had about an 1 to 1.5 hour drive, we enjoyed seeing the country side. We turned onto a beautiful tree lined driveway. The home we saw in front of us was once lived in by Ricardo Guicaldes who wrote Don Segundo...

We enjoyed a relaxing few days at this traditional estancia which is about an hour from Buenos Aires. The estancia arranged a private airport pick up and return transfer at a much lower cost than that offered from a well known taxi company. It takes around an hour from Aeroparque (Jorge Newberry domestic airport) or an hour and a half...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A beautiful 180-year old Argentinian “Estancia” (ranch) considered the oldest and most traditional in the area. The place where the famous writer Ricardo Güiraldes, author of the internationally-acclaimed novel “Don Segundo Sombra”, spent part of his life. The actual site where he found inspiration to write about the “gauchos” to whom he rendered tribute by making them popular. La Porteña was declared National Historic Monument for its unique Argentine Creole style with thick walls made of adobe. In 1969 the place was chosen for the making of the film version of “Don Segundo Sombra”. Chosen as ¨1,000 places to see before you die¨ by Patricia Schultz. About the Ranch: Located in the district of San Antonio de Areco, the Estancia is only 50 minutes away from Buenos Aires City. This unique typical Argentinean Estancia is considered one of the most beautiful and traditional in the country for its history, architecture and surrounding natural beauty. The main house was built in the 19th century and the park around it was designed by the French landscape professional Charles Thays. Distinguished and prestigious personalities from the world of art and culture spent pleasant seasons in “La Porteña”: Jorge Luis Borges, Carlos Gardel, Victoria Ocampo, Count Keyserling, Rabindranath Tagore, Garry Kimovich Kasparov and Pedro Figari among others, enjoyed the hospitality extended to them by the Güiraldes Family. ... more   less

“The rooms in the house are more light and airey.”

“We stayed in joining rooms in the 'small' house. The staircase was quite steep. All five of us shared the downstairs bathroom. Note that the rooms are rustic. We found them charming, and clean enough, but you shouldn't expect 5-star-hotel quality rooms in the ranch/farm atmosphere of this estancia.”
