Unfortunately my overriding memory of our stay at Chez Gaspard was of how uncomfortable the pillows and bed were. The bed was very hard and the pillows were square pieces of foam stuffed into a tiny pillow slip that was too small for the foam thus making them rock hard too! Locals also congregated in the parking area trying to sell various souvenirs and postcards - I don't blame them but it did make it awkward to politely ignore them each time we arrived/departed from the accommodation.

Accommodation at Chez Gaspard is in individual cottages - each has a bed, shower room and toilet and at night it's quite soothing to listen to the fast flowing stream below. You'll need insect repellent as mosquitoes are prevalent - the rooms come with netting around the bed. There was also an extra blanket as nights in July can be quite cold. Breakfast here was good, with breads and a choice of egg dishes; dinner was OK - some of my group found the meat a bit tough. WIFI is available only in reception, but was rather intermittent.

Chez Gaspard is supposedly run by an order of nuns, but we didn’t see any during our stay. We were worried about this hotel before we arrived as we had been told it would be the most basic on our tour. So, we were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The bungalows are not large and have basic facilities but are very clean. Each room has its own hot water tank and therefore had the best hot showers on the whole of our trip. They provided hand soap and towels, but little else. The bed was comfy, but not large and the mosquito net was very tight over the bed so it was easy to end up with it over your face! Dinner was surprisingly good from an a la carte menu and the breakfast was pretty standard with eggs as you liked, if asked. Possibly the best restaurant during our trip. We had a great trip into the Ranomafana Rain Forest and saw lots of different types of lemurs and other animals. We had a walk around the local village with our driver; that was an eye opener. And a visit to the local thermal pool, where ladies have to wear an obligatory “bonnet”. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.

For the price point, I think Chez Gaspard is a good value and in a convenient location. The rooms are clean and spacious enough for 2 people. They do get quite hot, even with the fan, though. The gardens on the grounds are quite nice and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The standard breakfast is sparse - bread and jam with juice and tea. But you can ask to add on eggs and other items - we didn’t know that was an option until we were leaving. We did ask for cheese both mornings which they were happy to accommodate. The biggest challenge for me was the spiders - there are many very large spiders hanging in webs all over. This was particularly challenging for me at night, when we needed to walk to the main reception area for dinner or meet our driver in the parking lot. Even with a head lamp it was easy to walk into webs, which was terrifying for me. These spiders are everywhere in town, too, though, so I am not sure staying somewhere else would be any different. Bottom line - this was a fine, inexpensive place to stay for a couple of nights. I don’t think I’d want to stay longer, though.
