Whale shark was a great place to stay. It was clean, good food- fresh fish from local market and cold beers, fabulous views. Carlos was very welcoming! We were sad to leave! Reasonable price for what you get, definitely recommend.

We stayed at one of the bungalows for over a week and enjoyed the last days of our journey with the most remarkable sunsets. The owner Carlos is very helpful and goes to the market himself to buy fresh goods for whatever his guests ordered for dinner. I especially loved the seafood and pilau dishes. This clean place right at... More

A really nice, peaceful place to stay. Big clean bungalows, super friendly management, lovely views of the ocean, a nice beach to swim, monkeys playing in the trees, reasonably priced food, close to the village but very peaceful, all in all, a great place to stay for $25 per person per night.

I stayed here with 2 friends for 3 nights in Sept 2015. It was a beautiful place. Just a short walk from Kilindone (walk on the beach side of the airport away from town). There are about 5 cottages, all very nice and clean. The main dining / relaxing area is up on a headland looking out to sea and... More

I am definitely going back to that lodge if I were doing Mafia Island again. The staff were superb. We were three and Carlos gave us a whole bungalow nearest to the cliff for $50 including breakfast. The village is just near. We could buy fruits at cheap prices and bring them to the lodge and the kitchen staff would... More

Hi, we stayed at Whale Shark in april 2014 and we are very desappointed. We booked two bungalows. The manager agreed with us on the phone for the price of the first bungalow with only 1 person but we honestly did not think he would double the price for our couple in the second bungalow. Then he asked us to pay... More

Of course Whale Shark Lodge would be ranked 7 out of 7 when the other 6 are all fancy resorts within the boundaries of the Chole Bay Marine Park. Whale Shark Lodge cannot compete with $400 a night resorts inside the $20/day Marine Park with wifi and the comforts of the western world on one of the most remote islands... More

First, some information about how Whale Shark Lodge fits into the tourist scene on Mafia Island. Basically, the only tourist attraction worth the expense of getting to the island, the Marine Reserve, is on the east and south side of the island. The Whale Shark Lodge is on the 'wrong' side of the island, facing the mainland of Tanzania. Also,... More

I stayed at whale shark lodge for 3 nights. I enjoyed my staying. People working there are very friendly. I liked a lot the food of the restaurant as well. The lodge has an amazing ocean view, probably the best view of the coast. My bungalow was simple and more than advantageous regarding the price i paid. Its very cheap and... More

The best quality/cheap lodge in Mafia Island. I read other comments saying it was overpriced: we were 2 and paid 25$ per night (in total, not each), breakfast included, I can't really understand what people expect from lodges, to charge guests 1$ per night? Amazing view, friendly and helpful staff, great breakfast and food in general (you could have lunch... More
