Butterworth is essentially not a tourist destination, so the hotel options are really limited, apart from the expensive Sunway Hotel in Seberang Perai. So, if I am working around Bertam, Kepala Batas, Kulim, Bkt Mertajam area, there isn't really much option, until De' Garden Hotel comes along.

This hotel recently open sometime in Feb2010. It is located right behind the Butterworth Billion Departmental Store. In Google Map, you will find this hotel located on Lorong Cempaka instead of Lorong Cempa.

For a sales person like me, my needs for a night stay is really quite basic, and De' Garden Hotel has delighted my staying experience.

The standard room with balcony is brighly lit, with individually controlled air-cond, large LCD TV with 5 channels or so (think it was ESPN, Star Movies, AEC, NTV7 and etc.) The bed is really firm and great pillows. I particularly like the wooden flooring that really helps keep the room cleaner compare with carpets. There's safe in the room as well. Wifi didn't work when I was there, but I am sure they will fix that up soon.

The toilet design is really good: no bath tub, water leak proof (helps keep the flooring dry), and the shower is hot and strong.

There's ample parking, located conveniently with loads of food choices around. So, even though breakfast is included (not much choice, like Nasi lemak, American Breakfast choice), you want to eat outside those coffee shop nearby.

The cafe downstairs is managed by a professional caterer that does outside catering, so the food quality is good and pricing reasonable.

Overall, this Hotel is not easy to get to unless if you have a car (as with around Butterworth-Perai area anyways). I would still strongly recommend if you just want a good comfortable stay when you are around the area.

I arrived at this hotel with my motorcycle loaded up to the max with a massive suitcase, my backpack and many other miscellaneous items. The indian man at reception quickly checked me in without much fuss at all. He then promptly got the luggage trolley (the ones you only see in the movies) and took all my bags up to the room for me, not asking for a tip or anything ( I wouldnt have given him one anyways as I dont encourage begging). The room was extremely spacious and had a balcony facing the lovely block across from us where locals threw rubbish onto the roof and sat around a camp fire just across from the hotel. My only complaint was the money hungriness of this hotel. If not booking through the internet ( which only a small portion of the world actually have access to) you will be slugged with a much higher room rate. I tried to rebook my room however I was told I must pay the higher rate or transfer all my belongings to another cheaper room. I did the latter but the mosque soon woke me up well before sunrise. If it wasnt for the greediness of the hotel I could have skept in peace in my first room. The breakfast is traditional malaysian, but there is toast and eggs if thats yourthing. Also the hallways and elevator are not ac. pillows super soft, bed comfortable, ac cool, tv yes and shower is hot

I was checked into a room which was not cleaned at all although I arrived after 2 pm!! I was shocked to see the bed not made at all, towels not changed, cup not washed, old newspaper not cleared, fridge and wardrobe doors opened and used shampoo containers in the bathroom not thrown away. After reporting to the manager, I was switched to another room which seemed like a downgraded room (no 325) because there was a wall right outside my window and I had no view at all. At night there was an engagement party being held on the 1st floor and the management allowed drums to be played. I complained to the front desk at 10.30 pm and was told that the people holding the event were allowed to continue until midnight!! How can a hotel management not respect other hotel guests and expect every one to sleep only after midnight!! This is most horrifying stay I have ever experienced in any hotel. I would not recommend this hotel to any one I know.

we stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as we had weddings to attend on Sunday & Monday..this hotel is a bit outskirt from the bustle and busy life of Penang..booked this hotel via booking.com..direction wise to the hotel, luckily we had my Garmin Asus phone GPS, otherwise, God knows when only we will arrive at the hotel...we went there on a Saturday and on Saturday, there's a night market at Kepala Batas which is quite near from where the hotel is located at...so, our dinner issue was resolved...

about the hotel, it's more than enough if just for a place to sleep...room was quite spacious, had all the basic amenities...downfall will be the lack of complimentary wifi & the very moderate breakfast dishes...luckily we were quite familiar with Penang & Penang is one of the food haven places, so we didn't had much trouble looking for food...

Pros:
-Cozy
-Basic amenities
-Quite near to Kepala Batas
-Above moderate for spaciousness

Cons:
-No complimentary wifi
-Too moderate & simple breakfast

If you are looking for a place just for sleep purpose and spend the rest of the day outside of the hotel, then this hotel can be in your list...but bear in mind that this hotel is located at Butterworth, which is the mainland, not at the Penang island...

ROOM
- Stayed in Standard Room with 2 Single Beds which cost me RM140 per nite. The price includes complimentary breakfast for 2 pax as well. Their published rate in the website is RM200 per nite but then I stayed on weekday which is less crowded.

- Toilet was clean. No bathtub only shower.
- 32’ LCD TV featuring local channels, EPSN, Discovery and Fox movies.
- Breakfast was local menu. Simple and ok.
- Complimentary dailies have to pick up from the reception.

LOCATION
- Not easy to locate if you are not familiar with Butterworth/Seberang Jaya area.
- 5min walk to Billion supermarket- easy to buy food, stuff u need etc.
- Located in quiet neighbourhood.
- 5mins walk to halal tomyam restaurant, laksa seller and a mamak – great hangout for afternoon tea.
- 5mins drive to local Chinese cuisine in Jalan Raja Uda dining area.

The price here seems reasonable , 150 rm with breakfast for a double.
Staff were offhand though and the room was not clean, especially in the bathroom where the shower curtain was covered in mould and mildew.
Breakfast was limited to chicken nuggets and cold fried Maggie noodles, no fresh fruit available.
Over all a fairly cheap place to stay overnight if you are on route north to Langkawi or places further south .

What a find this place is! A room that would cost at least double anywhere else, a
superb breakfast at only rm17 each and a staff that go the extra mile for you. The free WiFi is very fast and obviously a lot of money has been spent on it.
This is has to be the best value for money anywhere. We could not recommend this one highly enough.

Having arrived after midnight and double checked with the night receptionist as to the best way to check the cleaning staff don't wake me up in the morning, I dutifully hung out the little old door handle sign and happily went to sleep in a comfortable, clean room, only to be woken all too soon, at just after 9am, but the daytime receptionist asking me if I'd like to book a taxi.
I don't know who instigated this policy of phoning people who have checked in after midnight but they should be sacked immediately. Furthermore, rather than apologizing for waking me up, the receptionist continued to ask whether I wanted a taxi anyway, and her attitude was merely abrupt rather than contrite on checkout. I shall certainly not be returning to a hotel that employs such inept, rude, and simply unintelligent staff in such important positions of responsibility.

Secondly, despite turning on the airconditioner just to cool down the room late at night, almost immediately upon turning it off the room was hot and stuffy again. Upon closer inspection both the main door and the door to the "balcony" (all 0.5 square meters of it!) had huge spaces beneath them and beside them, meaning to maintain a constant room temperature requires the airconditioner to be running constantly. In this day and age of global warming when we all know we need to reduce our carbon footprint, this is simply not good enough and demands immediate repair.

Finally, while rooms are cheap to book here online in advance, be aware that if travelling from the bus or train station it's a 15 ringgit cab trip, or 20 for a call taxi to take you back again. If you think you have the time and energy to walk the really fairly short distance, be sure to have an extremely clear and detailed map: "The fastest way to get lost is to ask a local."

Our guests were very happy staying in this hotel. Overall clean, neat & friendly service. They even have private parking for your stay.My guests said the Breakfast was so so only, eating out at neraby reastaurants is better. Food in Penang, Butterworh, Bukit Mertajam in general taste good & reasonably priced.
