I am (was) a total newbie traveling solo but always wanted to learn to surf while also staying off the beaten path away from the all inclusive scene. I researched several places and finally landed on Surf Break. I was a little worried that not being right on the beach would be an issue for me but walking through that door for the first time almost immediately put me at ease. The grounds and atmosphere are exactly what anyone could want if looking for a tranquil, rejuvenating vacation. The place is kept immaculate and the fully equipped kitchen allows you to prepare food from the local markets. Breakfast offered is great and offers eggs, fresh rolls, fresh fruit, cereal and great coffee daily. The staff is so welcoming and always available to assist with any needs or area suggestions and information you may require to make your stay incredible. Pizza night is a must as not only is the pizza awesome but it allows you to interact with the other guests. I quickly made friends from around the world that will not soon be forgotten and hopefully extend long after just my week at Surfbreak. Note, this is not a party hotel and outside of pizza night, everyone kinda shuts down from 8pm onward depending on the night. being a solo traveler, a few extra interactive evenings would have been welcomed but I was lucky enough to meet some great people to venture into Cabarete (15 min drive, taxi) for dinner and live music. The walk to the beach is short and many walks down to the beach I was greeted along the way by roaming horses and even cattle. There were moments it felt kinda majestic, especially close to the beach. What I loved about the area was the unspoiled trees and foliage that lined the beach. At times of the day if felt Ias though had my own private beach and didn't feel like a tourist beach. During the morning through mid day you will find the busiest time with avid surfers. There are many different places along the beach offering surf lessons, I used Wave Soul (affiliated with surf break) and highly recommended. I received a lesson and board rental is available daily through your visit. Places to eat are plentiful in walking distance from the food park 5 min walk, a few places scattered along the beach area and close to surf break (surf roll rooftop restaurant around the corner). Anyway, without writing a book, it is no secret I highly recommend Surfbreak for solo, couples and friends looking for paradise for an exceptional value but beyond an even greater travel experience. I expect I will be back in the near future and without doubt I can say that Surfbreak is the best place in the area so there is no need to decide and simply book your ticket to paradise.

Great place to stay while you are in Encuentro!
My sister and I stayed at Surfbreak for two weeks and absolutely loved it. Our room had AC and a mini-fridge. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. We both enjoyed two pools on the property after surfing and kiting and a yoga studio with free mats. Surfbreak has a beautiful garden, and you truly feel you are in a jungle. In addition, a shared kitchen to prepare food, complimentary breakfast, Thursday’s BBQ, fun gatherings, and people made our stay memorable!!! It was a wonderful trip, and we hope we will be back soon!

Beautiful place with great hosts. We had a very warm welcome and our rooms were awesome. The breakfast was fresh and everything was offered to have a great start for the day. We also were renting some surfboards and got help with daily activities or restaurant advices.

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of staying 3 nights in September and we absolutely loved it and wish we had spent more time at this beautiful place. Great location next to the beach and close to road and transportation. Great kitchen facilities and staff with an environment that integrates people if they want to.

I stayed in surfbreak with my partner for just over a week and then a few more days by myself. We came to surf and it could not be the more perfect place to stay. Romario is so wise and helpful! The communal kitchen is so perfect! All the things you need and a really great way to meet and cook with other guests! Beautiful and safe and close to the beach and the perfect way to enjoy the paradise that is playa encuentro. Could not recommend more! We will definitely be back!

Had an amazing time staying at Surfbreak and can't recommend enough. Great rooms, breakfast and Jero and Eli were extremely helpful throughout my stay. It's also a great location for access to Encuentro beach or Cabarete. Thank you and will be back for sure.

The place was very relaxed and beautiful, full of nature and with hammocks. Good breakfast and they offer very interesting activities. We were able to surf and we enjoyed it very much. I recommend taking the class in case you have never practiced it.

Answer from Surfbreak Cabarete
Cabarete, Dominican Republic1 contribution
Hi Alexandra, thanks so much for your question! I'm Jessica -- the manager at Surf Break -- and as a single woman who's been living here for about a year now, I thought I'd jump in and handle this one. Basically, you have 3 options for transportation to the center of Cabarete. It's completely feasible to stay here without renting a car or moto; I don't have one either. Your first option is public transportation. It's about a 3-minute walk from Surf Break to the main road, where you flag down "carro publicos". They pass every 10 - 15 minutes and cost 25 pesos during the day, 40 at night. Your second option is to take a mototaxi; it's 100 pesos to Cabarete during the day. We can either call a moto for you or you can flag one down pretty easily. Final option is via taxi, which is 400 pesos to Cabarete for up to 6 people. If you find a group that wants to head out at night, it can be a really great deal. At night if you don't head out too late, a moto to Cabarete or a carro public are good options. I don't recommend taking a moto back from Cabarete if you've been out partying and you're coming back late. Worth it to take a taxi. All in all, there are definitely safe and easy options for getting to and from Cabarete as single women. Happy to give you more details once you're here!
