My LONG-detailed review on Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites.
If you don’t have time to read it, it is a lovely resort and a great choice. Just go, you’ll love it.
If you have time and like lots of details, read on.
I vacationed with a friend in September 2023 at Iberostar Selection Bavaro Suites for 5 nights and 6 days. This was approximately my 20th trip to the Caribbean but my first time to Dominican Republic.
The resort is a family friendly resort situated on a beautiful strip of white sand beach.
When our shuttle arrived at the resort, it took us on a long sprawling drive through the property along the golf course.
There are 5 resorts within this resort complex. The Grand is the adult only luxury property and gives you access to all the other resorts in this complex. The Punta Cana and Dominicana give you access to one another; they are similar in look and size. Currently the Punta Cana is being refurbished but they did a great job of camouflaging the buildings with tarps draped around it that look like the side of the building and the balconies. From far away, you wouldn’t realize it was a tarp! The Coral Level is a resort within the Bavaro Suites and gives access to the Dominicana and Punta Cana. This gives you more choices or beach, pool, bars, etc. However, we were happy with staying at the Bavaro ide and didn’t use the other two resorts. There are golf carts if you want to take them around the property instead of walking.
We arrived at the lobby of Bavaro Suites and were immediately taken to the front desk where we were given a refreshing fruit juice welcome drink. The bell hop set our bags aside and the front desk staff checked us in. We arrived approximately 2 hours prior to check in time of 3:00, so we were shown a map of the property and told what restaurants were open for lunch at that time. We were hungry from a long travel day. We ate at the buffet by the pool, walked the property to acclimate ourselves and then grabbed a couple cocktails from the lobby bar while we waited for our room. A bell hop took us and our luggage to our room when it was ready at 3:30.
The real feel temperature was between 102 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit each day of our stay. We didn’t have one drop of rain the entire stay. It was hot and humid. I think it was the hottest I’ve felt in any Caribbean destination I’ve visited. After we left, I heard from friends we met there that were still there, that heavy rains finally came, and the temperatures dropped a bit.
We were assigned building 22 in a first-floor room. This building was a good location to all amenities. Close to the beach, pools, etc. The resort has villas spread out with 8 rooms in each, 4 on 1st floor and 4 on 2nd floor. The rooms are large. Either two double beds or one king. The bathroom is somewhat spacious with a large walk-in shower and large vanity. There is also a sitting area in the room with two sofas, a mini fridge stocked daily and a large flat screen TV on the wall with a desk. There was a large closet with plenty of hangers, shelves and a safe. The rooms are a little dated, however not a problem, ours was very clean and the housekeeping did a fabulous job cleaning daily and leaving flowers and towel art.
We ate at the dinner buffet our first night because we were tired and didn’t feel like trying for a reservation or waiting to eat. The buffets have a large variety of food, and they change it up daily so you can try different foods without getting bored with them. Everything from tacos, soups, salads, pizzas, chicken and fish. The fish was amazing at lunch. It was just a simple white fish floured a little and baked, but it was delicious and lite tasting. Breakfast had omelets made to order if you’d like. There was always fresh fruit, juices, pastries, etc. One night we had a 9:00 dinner reservation so we went to the buffet when it opened for a quick appetizer to hold us over. I am not a sushi eater, but if you are, there was a huge variety of fresh sushi for dinner.
Lunch is also provided outside of the buffet at a small stand where they made hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken. There were French fries, onion rings, rice and salads, most days they prepare large pans of paella there as well.
Our first full day after breakfast we visited the concierge in the lobby to help us with dinner reservations. There is an Iberostar app that enables you to make the reservations, but it really wasn’t working well because after booking one it wouldn’t allow me to book any additional reservations. When we visited the concierge, we were able to get reservations for the additional 4 nights of our stay. Keep in mind, it may not be the exact time you’d like to eat. You will need to be flexible. We were happy to take late reservations because we wanted to stay on the beach and the pool (closed at 7) then shower and get ready. We were fine to eat later but it could be tough if a family brings small children. We ate at the steakhouse, Italian, Mexican and hibachi. They were all very delicious and the food came our quickly. Our favorite was probably the steakhouse. The New York Strip steak was done perfectly and was a nice cut of meat. I would have ordered a larger size if I knew it was going to be so delicious. There are several first courses to choose from on each menu and about 4 desserts on each. We are wine drinkers and were pleasantly surprised by how good the dry house wines were for an all-inclusive resort.
There is a coffee bar on site which has different beverages, pastries and small sandwiches if you want a quick bite between meals. The lobby bar had several bar stools and tables to relax at and they have popcorn if you want a lite snack there. There are fun chair swings that we sat at every late afternoon when we were done with the sun and water and wanted to swing with a glass of wine. It is surrounded by water and lush foliage. Look for the fish and turtles that swim around in there.
There are some iguanas and geckos running around. They are harmless. The birds though, watch out for the large white birds near any buffets. Since the buffets are open air, the birds tend to fly in and one grabbed a bite of my friend’s half eaten omelet. They are harmless but can be annoying when you’re eating. But no big deal. They were pretty to see.
Other than the foam party, we didn’t really take advantage of the activities during the day, but there were plenty to do if you choose. There are tons of beach chairs and palapas on the beach. We never had to search for one.
The main pool with the swim-up bar had many chairs as well. They were a little scarcer than the beach, but we still were able to find two together in some shade. We enjoyed the smaller pool more so than the main. It had its own bar, plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. It was quieter over there. It was so hot that week, we were in the water almost the entire time we were outside. The pool water was very warm, especially in the main pool in the swim-up bar side of the bridge where it was shallower. If you go over on the other side of the bridge where it is deeper, the water was a little more refreshing.
There is gift shop and jewelry shop near the lobby. Also, this is where you find the excursion desks.
There is a small “shopping street” on property between the Bavaro Suites and the Dominicana resort. It is a cute strip of stores painted pretty vivid colors. It is mostly the same items in each shop and there was little pressure from one or two people to buy things, but you can simply say a firm “no thank you” and you will be fine. It was nice because it felt somewhat like you were in a little town not a resort.
There are vendors that walk the beach selling souvenirs as well. Again, they will want to talk to you and I’m a talker, so I had no problem chatting, sometimes looking at their items. I purchased a pretty wood carving of an iguana and he carved “Punta Cana” into for me. Again, if you’re not interested, simply don’t make eye contact and a firm “no thank you” should work.
On the side of the resort with the Dominicana and the Punta Cana, there is a shopping complex. This is where the sports bar, Star Rock American Restaurant, the disco and the casino are located. We poked our head into each of those but didn’t use any of them. There is a cigar shop in this complex also. Another gift shop is here but it was closed when we walked over. This shopping plaza has potential, but it was completely empty of guests and many things were closed when we walked over mid-day. There is a bar that was open and small tables in the plaza to sit at. I assume it gets lively at night with the disco, sports bar, etc.
We also poked our heads into the spa and the fitness center. The spa looked lovely, and they were running specials for massages but we didn’t take part in any of this so I can’t review them.
I get bug bites like crazy anywhere I go, and this was no different. I can honestly say I didn’t see them, or feel them when they bit me but, in the evenings, I’d notice several every day. So, if you get bit up, you may want to coat yourself in bug spray anytime you are not in the water.
The first several days, there was no seaweed whatsoever. The next couple days, a little seaweed was floating in, but it was nothing bad at all. There were several tropical storms in the Atlantic and Caribbean at the time, so I assume it was from that. Also, if you are looking for calm still water, it was kind of rough with larger waves. Again, not sure if that was from the storms at sea, or if this area typically has larger waves. Personally, I like the waves better than a still “lake-like” ocean.
Most of the staff speak in both English and Spanish. I only know a few key words in Spanish, but I think they appreciated when we tried to say some in Spanish. The language barrier might be difficult for some, but you are in a Spanish speaking country, so you need to realize that going there. Most guests seemed to speak the language or at least a language close to Spanish.
Iberostar resorts are eco-friendly and do not have any single use plastic waters bottles. They have glass bottles in your room, and filtered water filling stations situated around the property. We had zero issues with the water and food. We ate fruit, drank juices, iced drinks, etc. We used the filtered bottled water for brushing our teeth, not tap water.
Our room keys were on our wristbands which was convenient to have; you didn’t have to worry about forgetting your key.
Pool towels are given to you at a towel hut at the main pool. We swapped them out daily for fresh towels with no problems.
All the staff we met were very friendly, and always appreciated any tips we gave them. Also, if we didn’t tip at a given time, the service was just as good.
A few names I can remember that stood out to us were Angelino at the quieter pool bar. He made great mixed drinks and went out of his way to go get us a white wine we liked that wasn’t at his bar. He made sure every late afternoon, he had it there for us. Jairon was the concierge that helped with our dinner reservations. Ramon in the lobby bar was great also. He ran to another bar to get us wine as well. I wish I could remember the name of the bartender at the beach bar. He made kick butt drinks and was nice and friendly. He was there almost every day, so I think it’s probably his usual spot. At breakfast each day we had the same servers, Mario and Teresa. They were so kind. Every morning Mario remembered our drink order of two aqua and two mimosas.
Our last full day, a local walking with a very large iguana came up to us on the beach and was a bit too aggressive wanting us to hold and take photos with his iguana, then asked for money after we took the photo. Be stern if you do not want him near you with it. I only saw him one day out of the 6 days, but just to warn you.
Another thing to note, Iberostar does have a Travel Club and does try to sell you a membership. I wasn’t pressured here about a presentation, but in the past, I was elsewhere, and I find a very strong NO, does the job. Unless you are interested, don’t waste precious vacation time listening to them.
The airport is open-air, so it is hot and there are no restrooms easily available when you deplane. From landing until we were in our shuttle, it was approximately 1 ½ hours. So be prepared for that, especially if you have young children that might get tired of waiting. We did arrive on a Friday later morning so maybe it was busier but be prepared.
The shuttle took about 25 minutes to get to the resort.
Would I return to this resort? It was nice and if there weren’t so many other places I’d like to see, yes, I would return here.
So, if you’re still with me after this long read, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you have. I’m hopeful I can answer them for you.

We just returned from 9 great days at this resort. The resort is beautiful and well designed. The rooms are in 2 story buildings with 4 rooms on each floor so you you never get that dorm feeling of one giant building. The beach is magnificient, with plenty of huts for shade. The restaurants are all very good with a wide variety of food available. The best thing about this resort is the people who work there. Ernestina was great as our beach bartender, Sofia did an excellent job as our room cleaning lady. Virginia was our lunch waitress at the beach buffet and even better as the cocktail waitress at the lobby bar every night. Arelis was our waitress in the buffet and she worked from open to close every day. All of these people were wonderful.

The only problem we encountered was the shower in our room. The shower floor sloped away from the drain and since half of the shower has no door, the water flowed out of the shower, into the bathroom, out of the bathroom and into the foyer, and then along the bedroom and down the steps into the sunken living area. It is mind boggling that such a beautiful and well cared for resort would choose to ignore this problem. When the flood occured on our first shower and we soaked up as much water as we could with ALL of our towels, including 4 beach towels, we called and reported to the desk . The front desk replied "We know, just block the shower doorway with all your towels and we will come replace them. I don't know how many rooms this occurs in but it would seem to be easily fixed. Instead, the resort chooses to ignore it.

We really had a great vacation and just suffered through a bad shower situation.
The nighttime entertainment was very good, and everything else was great. The lavatories by the pool were spotless and there was always a lady there making sure.

I had been here a few years ago (okay it was 2008) so it has been completely redesigned since then.It is a big resort, but you get to know your way around after a day or so. Rooms are super comfortable. Food is great. People are amazing. And most of all you feel safe here. I would go for jogs by myself daily, and never once was i concerned about my safety. Check in was slow, but then again there was only one person on the front desk and there were a bunch of 'complainers' ahead of us (actually they butted in front of us but anyway it's their blood pressure not mine). The beach is the best - not crowded like some of the other resorts - we were always able to get chairs right by the coral level area. And the ocean of course was the best part of the whole thing. I also love how Ibersotar is plastic free - no bottled water (they use a filtration system), and no straws = amazing for the environment. Also i liked learning about how they are trying to regrow the coral reefs and make an impact on fish habitat etc. We did see tons of yellow tail snapper just by the buoy line in the Ocean. Thanks Iberostar. We will be back.

To start off i would like to say that in Punta Cana, Iberostar has 4 resorts next to each other; Adults only, Selection, Punta Cana and Dominicana. Selection resort has prestige and coral levels with additional perks; exclusive lobby and better sun beds to name a few.

Punta Cana and Dominicana are cheap Iberostar resorts that located across each other. Then goes Selection and Adults only. Guests from Adults only can use all resorts, Selection guests can go to Punta Cana and Dominicana but not vise versa.

I stayed at Iberostar Selection and have to say that resort is pretty nice and feels like a tropical resort. It has remodeled rooms which is nice, however, they look simple and lack any decor. I would love to see some traditional Punta Cana decor in rooms.

Speaking of the rooms, you wont find cleaner rooms anywhere in the world! I do not know how they do it but, you leave for breakfast, come back at 11 and your room is spotless!

Food at main buffet, which is for breakfast and dinner, was absolutely yummy! with decent variety. However, for lunch you would go to a beach buffet which considerably lacked those qualities.

Some people said that resort had sea food every night at beach, however, during my stay I did not see any.

Staff was amazing,- always positive and smiling. At main buffet waiters/waitresses always engaged with people, which was very nice of them.

Sea weed at the resort. Many people will complain about beach being full of sea weed. However, i believe that it depends on season. I went there at the end of May and there was a lot of sea weed on beach... all other resorts within 1 hour had same issue with sea weed. Iberostar cleans sea weed, however, my suggestion would be to buy more then one tractor to clean it,- after all, i pay money to sit at the beach not in the pool.

Speaking of the pool, they have one big one which is main and one small one. Additionally, they have kids pool which is pretty good!

Entertainment seriously lacked any entertainment. All kidding aside but for kids they played same song every night with same dance moves. For adults they had singers, saxophone, guitar, piano players, and karaoke. Basically, my suggestion for them is to youtube Cancun resorts and learn a thing or two about entertainment.

Lastly, resort has nice pond around main buffet and lobby with a lot of unique birds and reptiles.

Overall, Iberostar Selection is a nice resort that feels like a tropical resort! I would come back.

It pains me that I couldn’t give this stay lower than a 1 star review and I hope that this will help others avoid wasting their time and money.

My mother and I were thrilled to visit Iberostar Selection Bavaro seeing as we both have been to the Dominican Republic three other times and enjoyed each resort we had stayed in. Upon arrival, we immediately noticed the uninviting atmosphere from everyone we had come in contact with. The entire staff, with an exception of maybe two individuals, possessed terrible attitudes. Don’t even think about coming here if you’re not fluent in Spanish and can perhaps stand up for yourself against their appalling behavior. Many of our experiences felt as if we were a burden to those who were serving us. This included places like the buffet where it seemed inappropriate to approach the counter and ask for food. It’s evident that it bothers the servers, yet this is what you had to settle for because it was impossible to make reservations for any of the restaurants even if you attempted to do so the day you arrived. Regardless of where you eat, do not expect variety in the food. It seems as though they often serve the same exact dishes or scraps of yesterday’s old food in different forms. The alcohol is clearly watered down and, more often than not, tastes like rotten fruit or the bottom of your foot.

Aside from this, we were constantly lacking supplies and toiletries in our bathroom. For 6 days, we went without body soap and had to ration conditioner despite us asking the room attendant on multiple occasions. On our last night, it had been filled up yet they were still stingy about it. They had filled up the soap bottle to about 1/8 of the amount for our last day.

The entertainment was unimpressive and they relied on the talent or embarrassment of the guests to run their shows. Not that you should be out that late anyways, because there is little to no lighting to see where you are walking at night. It feels extremely unsafe for kids and adults to be roaming around at night.

In conclusion, we could’ve stayed at home, watching paint dry and still would’ve had a better time.

It was my first time in Punta Cana and I'm in love! My mom and I have stayed there for 11 days. Great hotel, clean room, friendly staff, big variety of food and amazing beach!! Even though the last 3 days it was so windy and we couldn't swim because of the big waves and wind brought lots of sand to the pool area. So we have to stay at the pool. Every day All-day it was an entertainment team that makes sure people get involved and play games, dance Zumba or do different activities. At night time an entertainment team dance with people and after that they do a great show! On the resort territory, they have lots of restaurants but you have to make a reservation. We went to 7 different restaurants and the food was the delicious, tasty and friendly staff, didn't get disappointed. I would say that the resort is pretty clean, all the time you see someone who all the time clean up restrooms, hallways. In a morning you can see gardening cleaning up grass and make sure there is no tree leaves on the ground. It's a kids friendly resort, i don't have kids but i saw other families with kids. Kids were all the time happy playing/swimming at the pool or stay at the kid's room or stay with the animators team. Definitely come back soon!

This hotel has been redone and it’s absolutely beautiful! The suite are airy and the new colors chosen are very soothing and relaxing. Everything is simply marvelous!

3 new pools have been added, 2 of which are reserved for Coral Level clients. There’s a special section of the beach reserved for those clients and another one specifically for Star Prestige clients.

The food, both at buffets and restaurants à la carte, is extremely varied and very, very good. If you can’t find something to your liking with all the food offered there, I don’t know what you eat at home!

One very good thing is that most of the staff members are the same and they’re kind enough to remember you from one year to another. My friends, Juan and Aricella are still partnering in their section of the main buffet. Orlando is still asking clients if they’re satisfied and is simply everywhere...a very kind and attentive man! He cooks a fabulous paella at the beach buffet! He and Bileisy make a very good team overseeing the food everywhere. Senor Thomas, the chef in charge of the food served everywhere on the site, is a very attentive chef and very curious about what everyone likes.

The maids who cleaned our suite were very kind and attentive to our things. They not only superbly do their job but also put flowers petals on the bed and in the bathroom!

I’m very much looking forward to going back next year!

I am currently staying with my husband, we came here for our honeymoon and we chose this resort based on favorable reviews, however we were very disappointed from the very beginning. I contacted the resort a month prior to our arrival and asked for special honeymoon arrangements as all the resorts do that: a banner on the door, flower arrangement on the bed, bottle of champagne and fruits in the room, free or discounted couples massage... when we arrived we found nothing of the above and got a room on the first floor which is not very intimate. When my husband went to the front desk to complain it took him a while to get them to send some champagne as staff was asking him to pay extra. We got a room on the second floor next day but once again without any special honeymoon stuff.
Most of the waiters don't speak simple English, food at the buffet is very mediocre, most of a-la carte restaurants are closed and the those available are hard to book.
Been to Punta Cana before, paid less but the service and food was way better. Iberostar is a huge chain and I guess they were hit hard with pandemic but I know for sure that we are not coming back to this resort.

Iberostar does not disappoint. This particular resort is family friendly. They do have a kids club although we did not really take our 4 year old there. The kids pool is fun and right next to the adult pool so it was easy to keep an eye on him. The food was fresh and the service quick and friendly. Everyone was always smiling and happy to help. Every day there was some type of party/entertainment at the pool which was fun for the preteens/teens. Nightly entertainment was ok generally but nothing spectacular. There are 5 restaurants within the resort only one of which was for adults only. Food and service did not disappoint in there either.
The rooms are spacious with nice bathrooms and huge showers. Great daily service. The resort provides glass bottles in the rooms and there are water dispensing stations throughout the resort.
Overall a great week spent there. If in doubt where to book in Punta Cana, this resort is a sure bet to have a great time.

We have stayed at the Iberostar Dominicana 3 times. Food good, Service Good but lacked something. We decided to book next door at Iberostar Selection Bavaro. What a difference. I felt the food was better, service in the Buffet area was excellent (Thanks to Sophia and Carlos), grounds were beautiful as well as the beach area. We could only get into the Steakhouse. We were there 8 days and could not get into any other specialty restaraunts. I talked to a couple there and they went to 3 but they also took the tour of the Coral Resor (on premses). I told our concierge (Francisco) that I had no interest in taking tours and he said he would try to get me into the restaraunts, again only 1. Even after I slipped him a nice healthy tip to no longer ask about us taking the tour, I thought he would try a little harder. Many times we walked by these restaurants and they were not busy.

The room was very nice. I wished that we could of signed up for when we wanted our rooms cleaned as we were out by 8:00 and when we came back around 3:30 - 4:00. Our room was not cleaned. Many times, we sat on our balcony until the room was cleaned. We even put the sign out on our door to clean. The housekeeper was very nice and did a great job on cleaning and refreshing what was needed.

Will we stay there again, not sure. Main reason we stay is because the resort has a golf course on premises and the husband does not have to leave but I think we are going to look elsewhere and comeback another time.

No tank tops for men -- other than that, pretty much anything goes in buffets and a la cartes.
