By the first look you will understand immediately, why everybody is making such a fuss about the sheer beauty & breathtaking views of Mentigi Bay, only 20 minutes drive from Sengigi. This village is so charming with all palmtrees, frangipani and bougainvillea all nestled between lush vibrant green. Getting to Mentigi Bay is easy. From Bali a simple air or boat transfer goes directly to Mentigi Bay, the Gilis and Lombok. I can help to arrange everything for you before your arrival . In front of you like emeralds in a silver-white setting are the Gilis, these three tiny but world famous coral islands are in the Lombok Strait. The Neighborhood : MENTIGI BAY overlooks Bali and the Gilis from the North West shore of Lombok. INDONESIA is an island nation between South East Asia and Oceania. It is a tropical water wonderland of more than 15.000 islands of which 6000 are populated. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are the three enchanted coral Islands in the Lombok Strait and are one of the main diving attractions in Indonesia. BALI & LOMBOK are the gemstones of the archipelago with sandy beaches, volcanoes, rice terraces and beautiful dive sites. Lombok is less developed and is considered to be a hidden beauty, even though the island boasts so many natural superlatives, vast stretches of sandy coral beaches, the highest volcano of the Indonesian archipelago and rainforests. Lombok is just a two hour boat ride or 20 minutes by air away from the sometimes overcrowded Bali & Gilis . Lombok is also reached direct from any major European or Asian city arriving at it's newly opened International Airport. I can arrange a driver or blue bird taxi to pick you up for a cost of aprox 300 000 IDR Blue Water Cruises operate out of Mentigi Bay and have been providing a comprehensive Cruise and Speedboat taxi system for years that serve the Gilis, Lombok, Bali, Komodo, Moyo and Flores regions. Things to do on Lombok: Snorkelling and diving: There are several very good sites around Lombok and its surrounding small islands (Gilis). Lombok's sparkling blue waters are home to beautiful coral reefs with very rare blue coral and thousands of species of marine life. Sightings of Green Sea and Loggerhead turtles are common. Gili Terawangan, Meno and Air: These three small coral islands are rapidly becoming one of the most popular destinations for visitors to Bali and Lombok. All have spectacular white sandy beaches. There is also a strong environmental outlook on the Gili Islands, with efforts focused on reef protection, regeneration and turtle sanctuaries. The islands are very relaxed and laid-back, with a great variety of little beachside cafes, restaurants and bars serving all tastes in local and international cuisine. Best of all, there are no cars or motorbikes to disturb the peace. There are many other strikingly beautiful and less developed Gilis all around Lombok, offering amazing diving and snorkelling. The villa driver will be happy to take you to visit them. Surfing: Lombok hosts some of the best world class and beginner breaks. The area around Kuta is a surfer's paradise. Selong Belanak, Grupuk, Ekas and Bangko Bangko are some of the best-known spots. Trekking: There are several short treks to see waterfalls and other island attractions. Standing at 3726 m, Mount Rinjani is the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia. For the people of Lombok, Sasak and Balinese alike, this mountain is a sacred place. It is a challenging, but rewarding, 3-day trek for adventurous travelers. Local Markets: The vibrant traditional markets in Ampenan, Cakranegara and Bertais are nearest to the villa. You will find an incredible array of fresh local produce and commodities. Shopping: Lombok is renowned for its high quality cultured sea pearls which can be found in art markets, handicraft and jewellery shops and pearl farms. Our driver can take you to visit villages in Lombok which specialize in basket and textile weaving, wood-carving and earthenware pottery. Getting Around : Blue Bird Taxis are cheap , Speedboat to the Gilis and from Bali or Nusa Lembongan , Drivers can be arranged per request . It's a short , maybe 15 minutes walk downhills to our beach and office Other Things to Note : Our WIFI connection is usually working ok but you cannot get fast speed . We use an external modem for each room but the signal is sometimes weak . Best to get a 3G plan with a local simcard in Bali at the airport or there are many shops who sell them for cheap . This is not our mistake . It's a problem all over Indonesia . The maid can help preparing your breakfast but I suggest you bring your own groceries before check in . Coffee, Tea , water and coconuts are always available . THE VISION This was how we felt, when we first set foot on the hills of Mentigi bay two years ago. There was no road yet, no restaurant, nor a possibility to buy just a bottle of water. But there was "it" ever convincing and of heartlifting beauty: the Mentigi Bay view. And as we indulged in the view there came the vision of developing Mentigi Bay, living the dream of creating something, that would add up to the magic of this place. We negotiated, made plans, did things little by little: had the office built, the restaurant, and the dive shop on our private beach. During the daytime, we walked up and down the hill measuring the land and problem solving. And in the evenings we sat with a beer and a grilled fish on the beach, listening to the waves and the soft murmour of the palmleaves in the breeze whispering to us that everything was going to be wonderful at Mentigi Bay. It was on one of these magic evenings with a full moon bathing the bay in liquid silver that we had the idea of how we would like to form the core of the project we named "The Mentigi", it could be a loose cluster of a dozen villas, sitting on the very best of our land. And those villas could be the most unique in form and design anybody could imagine."Golden Eggs" we said, that is what we want to put into the green of the hills. "Golden Eggs" amongst swaying palms. We loved the idea of the egg and started researching it's deeper meaning in culture and mythology. We found that the earliest ideas of an "Egg-shaped Cosmos" comes from Sanskrit scriptures. The Sanskrit term for it is Brahmanda (Brahm means Cosmos', Anda means Egg'). The Upanishads elaborate the Cosmic Egg floating around in the emptiness of the universe for a while, and then broke into two halves which formed Heaven & Earth. These concepts existed in nearly every ancient culture, as well as in the Chinese Mythology of Pango, a god who grew in an egg and broke it into two halves, creating heaven and earth. Or the Egyptian god Ra was contained in a cosmic egg, laid by the mystic bird Anubis. In popular culture the idea of a cosmic egg was used in comics and science fiction such as in Isaac Asimovs novel "The Gods Themselves" where baby universes, in their cosmic egg stage, are used as alternative fuel. However, the Egg is highly symbolically charged. We decided to use the form's immanent creative power for our project. But who would design and build those egg shaped luxury villas? THE ARCHITECT We needed someone who would be sharing our vision, who would take pleasure in developing something completely new and bold and beautiful. Wolfgang a painter and architect has lived in Indonesia for over 30 years. Wolfgang Widmoser studied painting at the Vienna Acadamy with professor Ernst Fuchs, a widely known artist of surrealism. Widmoser also studied in Figueres with THE icon of surrealism: Salvador Dalí. Widmoser studied architecture too and was trained at the office of the famous designer Frei Otto, who was the first to use organic forms in 1972 at the Munich Olympic Stadium. We approached him, he agreed to take a look at the estate and we all travelled together from Bali to Lombok on one of our beautiful boats the 'Al Isra', being rocked gently into peaceful slumber by the swell of the Lombok Strait. In the early morning we arrived and the 'Al Isra' ankered in the front of Mentigi bay. Wolfgang was ignited by his very first view. He took his sketchbook and sketched, scribbled and drew until night fell.
