Detailed Reviews
Stayed here for 3 nights recently as part of a trip with my teenage daughter. We used Asahikawa as a base for some actvities in the central part of Hokkaido. The hotel 9C is close to the central station and some of the main shooping and entertainment districts are also within easy walking distance.
So, let's be clear this place is very much a half way between a hotel and either a hostel or a cabin hotel. If that's not your bag then don't try it, however, if that doesn't put you off then I think you're in for a treat.
The staff were all friendly and supper helpful, even if there was a language barrier between us at times. The set-up is pretty good and despite the small rooms and firm bunk beds, the place actually has some handy facilities; washing and drying facilities, etc. There is a fun vibe to the place which we enjoyed. However, the was not much noise during 'dark' hours, which was nice.
A small Japanese breakfast is provided (rice, egg and miso soup) and there are also some ramen available in the evenings as well (free of charge), should you wish. There is a cafe/bar open for a good part of the day, and a vending machine in the foyer which included beer.
The bathrooms are shared but clean (there are like 10 or so rooms per floor), so there was never any competition. There are separate shower rooms with communal sinks.
If I had to be picky, then the bed were are on the hard side, which is fine for me, but my daughter struggled a little. The pillows weren't great either. To stress again, the rooms are small and we had to do a bit of a shuffle of things every time we wanted to open one of our big suitcases.
None of these really caused any major bother and we really enjoyed our stay. I'd go back again, If was staying in the area, especially if I had a smaller case.

This quirky, boutique style hotel had a cool cafe concept embedded with a kitchen and check-in counter all on the same floor. Cafe stays open until 12am and you can pick some select instant noodles or canned foods available for which the cafe would cook for you of course. Every night stay is paid using a terminal, instead of over the counter, which I found quite troublesome. Shared bathrooms among the males/females were spacious and very clean. However, the room I stayed in was a double decker (I followed a group so i didn't pick it) and was barely manageable for a family of 2 adults and 1 kid. Obviously no cabinets, so if you're carrying large luggage, you'll need to place them on the floor, blocking access to your bed. You'll probably need to upgrade in such circumstances, but that would jack up the price, making it less appealing compared to neighbouring hotels that offer more sq feet. Breakfast was not worth the money as only rice, miso soup, less than half boiled raw egg, some green tea/water are all you gonna get, if I recall. This place works but get it only if on sale, otherwise neighbouring hotels provide better value.

Asahikawa
After half a day on Rishiri it wasn’t possible to reach Sounkyo onsen the same day, so I stopped in Asahikawa.
Stayed in 9-C hotel, close to the station and great value for a small but comfortable private room (shared facilities). Very clean and modern, and nice to have a normal shower in between all these onsens.
As bad weather was forecasted, I chose to spend the main part of the day in Asahikawa: tried the local soyu ramen and visited the Ainu museum (local bus from bus stop 14 in front of the train station) - respect for the efforts but this place could do with far better interpretation about their culture and heritage, the fact that it all looks so dusty and outdated does not help the credibility of the place imo.
Bus to Sounkyo onsen, via Kamikawa, from stop 8 in front of the train station.

+1
Boutique like hotel in a smaller private lane very conveniently located right opposite the JR Asahikawa Station. New, clean, cosy and friendly environment. Room though smaller but comfortable. Rooms made and new towels everyday. Bathrooms and toilets conveniently located, clean and bright. Morning breakfast consist of rice, egg, pickles, miso soup and hot beverage. We also brought some fruits that they help to cut up for us. Staffs are very efficient, hospitable and friendly.
