We live on the other side of the Bay, but we had a lovely one-night getaway to the Berkeley City Club Hotel recently. Designed by architect Julia Morgan (who designed Hearst Castle), the hotel was finished in 1930 and has been lovingly preserved since then....More

I very much enjoyed my four night stay here. Think of it as the opposite of the big chain hotels. It is a club in an amazing building, a cross between Art Deco and neoGothic, California style: service secondary to atmosphere.

This spectacularly beautiful building was designed by Julia Morgan of Hearst Castle fame, and was previously the Berkeley Women's Club. The building is lovingly preserved with comforting public rooms and garden. The pool is made of Malibu tile and is gorgeous. The rooms are small...More

I've stayed several times and this is a very special place. It's quiet and beautiful, and they have done a wonderful job of preserving the original architecture and interior design of the building.
