The rooms are small, the shower is fine, the food is good. So what's GREAT about this place? Well, the location couldn't be better, John, who owns the place is a jewel--very helpful in suggesting hikes, very knowledgeable. And even better is the people who are attracted to the lodge. I've met so many wonderful people there who I'd like...

Drive or better yet hike to this location for dinner. Walk along the creek and take photos over the creek bridge. Dinner is hardy, fresh, and delicious. Service is also solid. Coming here is a treat and feels like a you're dining in an old California woodsy restaurant. In the evenings they light a fire in the outdoor pit and...

For years my husband and I, who live locally near the town of Portola, have dreamed of having a family reunion at Gold Lake Lodge. Finally this year our wish came true - and everyone in our family agreed that this was the best reunion ever. The cabins are simple and rustic but clean and comfortable with plenty of hot...

Other than the tent cabins, the solid cabins are lined up in a long row closely spaced. Not a lot of privacy. the cabin is well equipped with modern shower/bathroom. Comfy beds. the meal plan is excellent and served family style. there is a recreation hall with piano (!!!) and games and books to check out. Nice retreat. They also...

We stay here every (other) year for a family camp reunion and have been doing so for many years. This place just gets better and better and we always leave with the most amazing memories. Gold Lake Lodge provides the food and shelter and mother nature provides the playground. There is so much to do just right out the door...

I haven't wanted to rate this before because I don't want the place to become crowded. It's in an out-of-the-way location with few of today's fancy amenities. No wi-fi, no fancy restaurants or shops, no swimming pool, no cocktail lounge, and no fitness center. Now that I've omitted most of my readers, I have to say we love this place....

Thank you very much for your nice review. We think your description of what we offer and do not offer is exactly what we strive to give our guests. We do have wi-fi but it is so slow (from a satellite) that we recommend that you read a book instead of the internet. We had lots of little kids last...

Gold Lake Lodge was better than advertised. We had an all inclusive stay in July and the food (dinner especially) was second only to the customer service provided by the staff. Thanks for a great experience from the Gregory's.

Since alot can change in a year or so, it seemed right to add a review dated 2014. We can add little to the thorough and thoughtful reviews here, and echo all the positives. We were delighted. Though alot could have changed, it hasn't. John must have described the hikes and vistas thousands of times since he first shepherded the...

My husband and I spent a week at Gold Lake Lodge, staying in a one room cabin with bath. We had a wonderful stay and can't wait to return. This is a terrific, old-style lodge in the mountains - perfect for getting away from it all, esspecially if you want to hike. The lodge is made up of a dining...

Have you ever thought "I could come back to this place every year"? Well, this is the place for our family. Every summer we show up and are greeted by John and his staff like we are part of their family too. Every year we all vote on a location for a long summer weekend and it is always unanimous:...
