My friend and I went to Idyllwild (mid-week to avoid crowds) to hike the high country. Turns out there is still too much snow to go to far unless you have snowshoes, but we still hiked and the trails are fantastic! Great medium to difficult level, depending on which trail you choose. We picked this little inn because it was so close to town. It's so cool not to have to get in your car to go check everything out. We picked up sandwiches after a great morning hike up Devil's Slide trail, brought them back to the inn, and sat on the sunny back deck watching the birds. The managers were great about advise on the local trails since they have explored the area extensively. Great resource for local information. We were comfortable at the inn. The accomodations were not luxurious, but the room had everything we needed. We didn't even need to shop for trail snacks because they provided us with granola bars. Can't wait to go back!

To say the place needed a coat of paint would be a gross understatement. The Cedar Creek Inn is in a state of disrepair. A winter snow was melting and there were no gutters to keep the water from mucking up the walk to our room, there was no welcome mat to wipe our feet on and the light was out so when we came home after dinner we were pretty much guessing where to step. The current Inn Keepers run two other businesses including a real-estate company and have kids - they do not live on the property. So there's no wonder the place is a bit shabby.

Response from palmspringsandy, Innkeeper/manager at Cedar Lodge
Responded 4 Mar 2009
Dear Sir, We are very sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us. Although I remember you well and was surprised to see your remarks here. To clarify to any others reading your remarks, I would like to respond to a few points. There certainly are no cobwebs in our rooms. It is true the property needs some spiffing up and repair, but we strive to provide clean, comfortable rooms. I would also like to state that everything in your room was in perfect working order. The fact that I am a licensed real estate agent and a mother certainly has nothing to do with the condition of the inn. In fact, I believe it adds to my overall ability to assist guests with their needs. The deferred maintenance is something we are working on daily. We have made repairs and improvement over the last two weeks and in the future will make considerably larger changes. We thank you for pointing out a few issues that should be immediately dealt with and would have happily received that input from you during your stay. It is unfortunate that you didn't mention your discomfort at that time. We would have gone out of our way to rectify any problems. We are saddened to hear that the Cedar Street Inn was not a good fit for you. While some changes and improvements won't happen immediately, we will continue to provide great service to our guests. We welcome any feedback. Please also take note of our growing cabin rental inventory. Possibly that would suite you better. We look forward to seeing you again in Idyllwild, even if just for another great message at the inn. Best regards, Don and Tiffany Innkeepers

My husband and I stayed at Cedar Street Inn this past weekend and were very disappointed at the cleanliness and overall condition of the Three Cottages room where we stayed. The king bed consisted of two twin beds pushed together and was not very comfortable. After closely seeing the lack of cleanliness of the room my husband didn't feel comfortable sleeping between the sheets. The room had a strong smokey smell and the carpets were very dirty and the entire room was in need of a complete refurbishing. The TV was a joke with only a few channels and a snowy picture. I felt like I was in the dark ages when TV's needed antennas. When we checked in the lady told me that there is no breakfast served on the weekends! Isn't that when you would typically serve it! When we checked out I told the lady our experiences and she told me that the owner was looking to sell it and doesn't want to put any money into the place. The place was probably really nice at one time but not anymore. If you really want a nice place for just a little bit more go next door to the Heritage House. What a huge difference!!

We just stayed for 1 evening - the Ashley Terrace room located in the rear of the property. There is no doubt that there is substantial deferred maintenance issues and the property is just plain OLD. But for one night we enjoyed it - if we were to spend more than one night we would probably reconsider. The location is great - within walking distance of the town center and the Bread Basket for breakfast.

When we first contacted the Cedar Street Inn (CSI) the man on the phone was a little 'off' and that should have been our first clue not to book it. We stayed in 'Thee Cottage'. My husband had booked it for our anniversary and unfortunately we were disappointed about the quality of the room. The decor needs some serious updating and renovating. The cleanliness was ok, but could have been improved. The bed was two twins pushed together and was very uncomfortable. The ceiling fan which we needed on at night was very noisy, hence I slept badly. The door to the cottage didn't work properly. The carpet, chairs and bedspread were stained. The towels and bedding were old. The supplied toiletries were samples they'd received through internet freebies, not proper hotel supplies. There is no maid service during your stay. The TV must have been from 1985 and had about 6 channels. We had a couples massage in a musty back- room of the property where the tape player had to be turned over half way through. The women that did the massages did a good job, but the ambiance was lacking. The woman on the front desk seemed a little stand offish and flustered and when we asked about a 10% off deal that was advertised on their web site, she didn't know a thing about it, although she did honor it after some debate. The location was however great, within walking distance to most things in town and there was ample parking. We would definitely try somewhere else next time.

We booked Rheinhaus at the Cedar St. website. We needed a cabin with Wi-Fi capability, and I wanted to bring our small dog. We were delighted with the cabin layout. There was a fenced backyard and dog door so the dog felt right at home. There was a fresh jacuzzi on the front deck where the evening stars were shining like diamonds. The cabin owner left condiments for us in the fridge! What a treat. Fresh butter for our pancakes, and real maple syrup! My husband enjoyed the Wi-Fi. It let him keep in touch with a project while he relaxed on the front deck. We loved watching the squirrels play in the pine trees. It felt so private with the trees surrounding the house in a canopy forest. So much better than a sterile, empty shell of a cabin! Thanks, Rheinhaus.

What an enormous disappointment! My husband and I stayed in the Hobbit House at the Cedar Street Inn a couple of years ago. This year for Valentine's Day he decided to surprise me by going there again. The Hobbit House wasn't available, and so instead he rented their second most expensive cabin, the Rheinhaus. We drove 2 1/2 hours to Idyllwild from the LA area, picked up groceries along the way to cook while at the cabin, and then checked in. Cathy, who was running the desk, gave us the keys and told us that our cabin was not on-site, and we would have to drive to it. The Rheinhaus is not in the downtown Idyllwild area, and a person hoping to spend their weekend on-foot would be disappointed that you'll need to drive in or be prepared for a long walk back and forth. When we got to the cabin, we were immediately confused, because there was a car already parked in the driveway. Then as we were entering, I noticed that the advertised "private" hot tub is actually outdoors on the patio. When we'd stayed at the Hobbit House the private hot tub was actually indoors; plus, it was snowing around Idyllwild--not really outdoor bathing suit weather. Once we got inside, we realized why there was a car parked outside. This was someone's home! Nowhere on the Cedar Street Inn website did they say they were renting out people's own private homes. There were dishes in the drying rack by the sink, lotions and medications in the bathroom, clothes in the bedroom closet, and a dirty refrigerator full of food! My husband and I were hoping to have a romantic weekend in a cabin in the mountains, not to spend over two hundred dollars a night to stay at a stranger's house. It was extremely off putting. It felt like we were breaking into someone's home. The owner left a note on the counter to help ourselves to anything in the fridge. It felt like we were staying at my grandmother's house. My husband and I didn't feel comfortable staying there, and so we went back to the office. Cathy was very kind about it and gave us our money back, but there were no other cabins available with Cedar Street Inn or anywhere else in Idyllwild. The whole town was rented out for the holiday weekend. So with a backseat full of food, we drove the 2 1/2 hours back to LA that night. If the Cedar Street Inn is going to continue renting out people's homes, I would hope they'd be honest enough to put it on their website, so that people know what to expect. For over two hundred dollars a night, I expect more. However, for myself I would absolutely not recommend staying there to anyone.

My husband and I spent a Saturday night in March, as a much-needed break from overwhelming work as a tax preparer and to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. We booked a room after an Internet search and were enticed by the photos on the establishment's website. However, we discovered that the photos, showing rooms which are newly decorated, fresh and clean - are either many years old or were staged. Our room - Thee Cottage - was worn, shabby and somewhat lacking in cleanliness. Throw rugs poorly hid the threadbare places in the carpeting and the bedspread was badly in need of replacement. The front door didn't close and latch properly. The backside of the shower curtain was grundgy and some of the ledges and shelves had accumulated dust. No individual shampoos were supplied - just a full size bottle used by previous guests. Fortunately, we had brought our own. The bay window has a view - of the cabin behind and the yard between - not of the forest as we had expected. We enjoyed the coziness of a fire in the fireplace, but only a few logs were provided - enough for only one evening - more at additional charge (bring your own supply). There is no gas lighter and, as not enough paper was supplied, we had to tear up an old magazine, to be able to light the fire. The only other heat for the room is a gas wall heater which is hard to regulate and, as it was dusty and linty, was a possible fire hazard. Freeze or burn - what a choice. The premises also show signs of age and neglect, but the property is nicely located near town shops and restaurants and as our room was in the back, it was peaceful and quiet. It could have been great had it been better maintained. Check-out was early (11 am) for a resort property and they called our room when we hadn't vacated on the dot.

We stayed at the Cedar Street Inn the weekend of 3/26/2006, and several items were not working in the cabin: such as the gas heat and toilets. The cabin itself was OK, but the stay was not acceptable due to the problems. We would not reccommend staying here.

My Husband and I stayed at the Cedar Street Inn Two Nights. We Had a very nice stay. Our Room was neat and cozy. The Inn Keepers were very freindly upon check in, We were shown to our room and also informed of all accommodations. The Inn is located within walking distance to all shops and resturants. Upon our departure we ran into a little car trouble and The Owner, Herb called a local Tow company for road side assitance. The tow company informed us that a jump would cost $65.00, when Herb was informed about the cost he without hesitant offered his AAA card. We were very greatful. We can't thank him enough and all the Staff who helped us. Its nice to know there are still people who care. We will definitly visit again.
