This review is based on my recent phone call as I was seeking to make a week long reservation at this property. I was politely told that the lounge is closed until next year. I have been traveling the U.S and staying at Marriott's with complete lounge access everywhere else. It is really unfortunate that Covid is being used as an excuse to remain closed. Buh Bye.

We spent three nights at this property and my overall feeling is one of disappointment. Nothing was terrible with our stay, but the hotel did not live up to our expectations. Most of our disappointment stems from this hotel simply not feeling luxurious. Despite JW Marriott being one of Marriott's luxury brands, this hotel really felt like a nice Marriott. Was there a doorman? No. Did the giant and loud lobby scream luxury? Nope, definitely not. How about the concierge? Well despite standing on the way to the elevators, not a single concierge ever greeted us or said a word to us as we went to and from our room. Speaking of the room, it was nice, nothing special though. The fit-and-finish was clearly chosen because it looked nice, but it was clearly cheap. Cheaply-wrapped laminated wood furniture? No thank you. This hotel also hasn't brought back any of the room amenities post-covid. Want a pen? It's not there. How about a notepad? Nowhere in sight. And while the bed wasn't soft enough for my taste, it also didn't feel luxurious. All of these things would be fine, if this was a Marriott, but it's a JW Marriott and was charging almost $300 a night while we were there. The biggest insult? Our view of the Hollywood hills was obstructed by an ad, for Budweiser seltzer. Again, how is this a luxury property? Then there's that destination charge. Goodness. I know that everyone hates resort fees, but the nerve of this hotel to charge one, in a market where they are basically non-existent, takes some serious gall. And again, takes away from the luxury feel of the hotel. What does this $30 a day fee get you? Free Wi-Fi (which you should already get as a Bonvoy member), yoga classes that happen before anyone is up, a wine tasting served from 4:30-5 daily (they served us Chateau Ste Michelle), $20 food & beverage credit, and my personal favorite-free popcorn from the movie theater next door. The worst thing about this is that it's forcing you to spend MORE money at the property, since the F&B credit expires each day. So every day we had to figure out how we're going to spend our $20, so we had a $73 underwhelming lunch ($25 for a Caesar salad with chicken, crazy), $45 on drinks, and $25 on lunches to go from the Illy cafe. If you have a compelling on-site restaurant, you won't have to coerce your guests to eat there. Breakfast was ok. We were able to get the buffet for free since the lounge was closed. The poor waitress working two of our mornings was so over-sat. She just couldn't keep up. The food was fine, though there wasn't enough on the buffet to defend the $32 price (for free, it was a solid breakfast). We typically stay at Hilton properties. This experience did not match up with the experiences that we’ve had at the Hilton competitor at this level (Conrad). Despite being in the same category, this JW Marriott didn’t even put up a fight compared to the Conrads (NYC Midtown, Dublin, and Indianapolis) that we’ve stayed at. This property should spend more time on improving their service and guest experience and less time finding ways to tack on new fees to their room rate.

Pros- Beautiful hotel Clean rooms Friendly staff Nice gym Cons- Not much in walking distance I docked them a star because they are lying about the lounge being ‘closed due to covid’. Marriott has instructed the brands to follow brand standards. And this hotel of all is laughable to claim this given the Lakers play full stadiums next door. Quit playing games and provide lounge access like you are supposed to.

Just got back from a 5-night stay at the JW Marriott and found it an excellent choice in downtown. Check in was very easy and my room was ready early which was appreciated after a long trip. The room was large with a very nice bathroom with plenty of amenities. Bed was comfortable and it was quiet. Great shower pressure and plenty of towels. The hotel followed all the COVID protocols. Concierge was very helpful and the entire staff was friendly and accommodating. Only exception was the Hertz representative who really was not at all interested in helping when we had a snafu with the reservation. He did not want to be bothered. However he is not a hotel staff. The bar had good finger foods which we ordered since we missed dinner. The hotel was central and easy walk to the convention center. I would stay here again if my travels take be back to downtown LA.

Business travelers need the gym to open at 5 am. If we have a 7:30/8:00 am meeting 6:00 am is too late to start a workout. This was a major inconvenience and I would not stay at this location again. The hotel is overall pretty average. Good location with a lot to do nearby
