it is about 10 miles to the south gate, but about a 50-minute drive to the Yosemite Valley floor (the main center of the park, the camp store, parking, Falls hikes, etc). Scenic, obviously, and there are turnoffs for hikes before there.
There are many restaurants in the town of Oakhurst. Nothing within walking distances, but only about a 4-5 mile drive.
