We have stayed at many hostels in our travels (we are 27 year old Australians) and this was one of the best located and friendly hostels we have stayed at. The hostel is only 2 minutes walk from one of the best beaches in town, and is next to State Street where all the restaurants, cinemas and bars are. Also...

I E-mailed this hostel in August 2005, saying that I would be there in October 2005, and he answered saying that he should have a bed available at that date. In late October I called him to see if he had a dorm bed, and he only had private room, PLUS one needs a passport to stay there. Nowhere on...

Management response:

I don't think this guest understood correctly what the receptionist said on the phone; it is possible that all our dorms were fully booked when he phoned and only private rooms were still available. Also our policy is that all guests need to show valid ID, either a passport and drivers licence as we do not allow locals to stay...

I thought things were going well in the hostel, until I learnt about the bed bugs. Was bitten quite a bit myself, and I saw them (thought they were small cockroaches at first). Otherwise, I wasn't so bothered by the loud trains - they do blow their horns right by the building, but I only heard two the one night...

Management response:

Unfortunately the hostel did have bed bugs this last summer, as did many of the hotels and hostels in California; it has been a bad year for them all round. We have now eradicated them and taken out the wooden bunks that harbored them along with replacing the wooden base boards with rubber ones. We have been bedbug free for...

My boyfriend and I booked this hostel almost a month before we were due to stay, we booked online via the banana bungalow website link, we reserved a private room with a private en-suite and we called the hostel on two seperate occasions before arriving to confirm that our room was def available. We were reassured that the room was...

i made a reservation more than 10 days prior to my arrival, and i even waited on the phone as they ran a credit card authorization. when my friend and i arrived at the hostel, we were shocked to know that they did NOT have a room reserved for us! we called many other hostels and hotels in the area...

I would like to warn fellow travelers of the bed bug infestation of the hostel. I stayed at the Santa Barbara Tourist Hostel on August 19th, 2005 and found myself itching and breaking out all over my legs and arms the following day. It was a particularly bad case of bed bugs if I might add. Two of my bites...

This place is filthy, insect and rodent infested, falling apart, and the manager is rude rude rude. The toilet didn't work, the shower curtain fell on me while I was showering, ants crawled throughout my bed (and me) all night, a mouse ran across the floor in our room, and the bathroom was filthy. The manager's response to the ants...

I just got back from my visit to Santa Barbara. Wow first words still recovering from the incredible sunshine and vibe that was there. The hostel was a great price with what a hotel costs on the weekend there. The staff were really cool and international. Beach was around the corner and the bars and clubs just as close. I...

I guess the previous two reviewers picked an off-day, we were pleasantly surprised with the location, the price, and the friendliness of the staff. They organized a night out at a local club and gave us free breakfast, which we had to pay for in other hostels. The ceiling tiles were being replaced while we were there.

“I stayed in a 12-bed female only dorm. I felt uncomfortable and wished I had the room to lock up EVERYTHING I had in the locker since I had clothing stolen. I don't think it matters what room you stay in, as people weren't that friendly and the beds were terrible”
