I went there in June 2017. I changed couple of places before . But everyone was talking about how you must stay in Santa Monica because its so great . BIG mistake .

I stayed at this hostel for 4 nights. A very chilled out atmosphere with lots of activity areas. Check in was fast. It's very close to the market area and pier. Plus, you get to meet people from all over the world.

The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller
coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.

If you can though, I would use an uber to get there and back. It gives you a lot more flexibility with time ☺️
