We stayed here for 2 days in Feb '20. Before we checked in, we called to let the hostess know that we will be checking in late, around 10pm. She was upset us claiming we would make noise and wake the other guests. We were a bit taken aback by the way she talked to us. Finally she gave us the code to enter (there is no one at the reception after 9pm to let late guests in). We should have cancelled seeing how rude she was to us but nevertheless, we continued with the trip hoping it was just an one off incident. When we reached there, we found the inn is an old creaky building. There is no carpet in the top floors. So, if you are in the top floor you need to tiptoe around (even then it creaks) and if you are in the bottom floor, you'll need to put up with the noise from above. The bathroom is outside the room, which was really inconvenient. There is no service whatsoever in the rooms - so, don't expect your room to be made or cleaned during your stay. The breakfast is very minimal and is served with all guests sitting at one long table - so, you need to wait for everyone to arrive to begin the breakfast, which we found kind of awkward. Why not just seat each family in a separate table like most inns or B&Bs?! The most appalling thing was the following day, she seated just my family in a separate room in a dark corner claiming because my child seemed sick, she didn't want her other guests getting alarmed!! Her excuse was completely made up because my kid wasn't sick in the first place and there were other guests coughing and sneezing in fact. She sounded racist to us (we were the only non-white guests) and she just seated us separately because she didn't want to spoil her 'perfect' breakfast table with a non-white family. Needless to say, we left without breakfast as fast as we could. We just wanted to get out of that awkward place.

Response from Barretta G, Owner at Barretta Gardens Inn
Responded 18 May 2020
I have owned Barretta Gardens Inn since 2005 during which time I have hosted guests of many nationalities, race and ethnicity from all over the world. I have hosted individuals, couples and families of all ages who have stayed in my over 100 year old Inn, enjoying its unique character and the hospitality offered through individual rooms or suites, including a full breakfast that meet the many dietary needs of my guests. I even offer in room breakfast where possible for those guests who are uncomfortable in the convivial environment of my main dining room or unable to attend due to specific health or mobility issues. I am writing in response to the very negative comments posted by Mr. Roopa who visited Barretta Gardens with his family in late February 2020. For those guests considering accommodations at Barretta Gardens, I think it is important to look specifically at the date Mr. Roopa and has family stayed with me….February 20, 2020….the first outset of the COVID-19 outbreak in the US centered on the San Francisco Bay Area from which they travelled. I consider it my responsibility to do whatever is prudent to help insure that my guests, many of whom are older, are not subject to unnecessary risk during their visit. When I observed Mr. Roopa’s daughter sneezing and coughing, I felt it was appropriate to provide the family with a separate dining location in my living room immediately offset from the dining room. I prepared a very nice table for the three family members and offered them the same breakfast options available to all of my guests. When I explained the option to him and the reason I had made the decision to seat them in a separate space to help protect my other guests, he became angry and directed his family to leave immediately foregoing the breakfast location option I had provided in the best interest of ALL of my guests. I believe that other derogatory comments that Mr. Roopa has posted regarding Barretta Gardens is because he took offense to my efforts to protect my guests from the possibility of a viral infection being spread to them from his daughter. I will not respond specifically to them but encourage you to look at the posted responses of my other guest over the years I have been in operation. In retrospect, with the continuing pandemic, and after long consideration of a response to Mr. Roopa, I remain convinced that the action I took to separate the Roopa family with a sick child from my other guests was absolutely the appropriate response and I will act similarly in the future. To imply that this was a racist response is frankly so disheartening and upsetting to me. I welcome guests from all cultures and from all walks of life. It is my hope that when I am able to reopen Barretta Gardens to the general public that you will consider Mr. Roopa’s comments and my response in perspective and in light of the terrible situation that we face in the world today with the ongoing pandemic. I strive to accommodate the needs of all of my guests regardless of their ethnicity, race or color. I also want everyone to know that they will be staying at a location that offers true hospitality but that also puts health and safety at the forefront of my concern during their visit to Barretta Gardens Inn and their stay in Tuolumne County.

I am a traveling doctor (worked at Adventist Health) who spent 10 month at the Barretta Gardens Inn. The hospitality is wonderful, such a homey place!! Distinctively Swedish!! Fresh fruit in the morning was outstanding (Astrid shops around for the best fruit), and I also liked the coffee (which is saying something after 10 months!). Very clean. You can walk to the downtown easily. Gardens are extensive, beautiful, and relaxing (with a koi pond), provide nice personal space.

Dear Stuart, Thanks so much for you excellent review, we so enjoyed having you for that many months and our conversations in the kitchen rating wines or trying the a Glen Morangie by the fire. We did cook a bunch of greenery from your delivery box which was quite interesting. Be in touch! Best, Barretta Gardens Inn

Truly lovely B&B and Astrid is the best. We had a great breakfast of English "coddled" eggs and chicken sausage. Room was lovely with great bed and wonderful bath and shower. Highly recommend a stay here as a quick jumping off point for all sorts of Sierra day trips all around.

We stayed as a family of four exploring Gold Rush country: we went gold prospecting, visited Columbia State Historic Park, Moaning Caverns and Calaveras Big Trees, and Sonora is conveniently place for all of these activities. The Barretta Gardens Inn was the perfect base for exploring. It's a historic and characterful house in beautiful gardens. We had the Sangiovese Suite Grande - two bedrooms, a large living room area, bathroom with rolltop bath and separate shower, and its own separate private entrance. Our youngest was very taken with the cats on the property. Astrid was a great host, and we enjoyed the breakfast

Astrid is a good host. She was amusing and interesting to talk to. Barretta Gardens is very clean and cosy in a rather cluttered way. We were warm and comfortable - but our room was not serviced for the three nights we stayed. Our bed not made, towels folded, nothing. We took dirty cups back to the kitchen ourselves. So if you are expecting any sort of service forget it. Breakfast served in the old fashioned dining room was not great. The fruit juice was sugar flavoured water and the eggs every morning were over cooked. So would we go back? No. But it is clean and comfortable, and if you like that sort of thing then you would not be disappointed.
