Hwy 550 from Durango to Montrose is the "scenic Highway" also known as Red Mountain pass. It can be driven on your own. It is beautiful, but has sharp curves and is steep most of the way. If you want to look at the scenery and not worry about watching the road, I would suggest having someone else drive.
