We spent a fabulous 5 days at Earth Lodge, Ulu Muda in early October. How amazing in today's world to find that special place where you do not have wi-fi or mobile reception - so liberating and it makes you appreciate more your surrounds and the rich chorus of nature. Hymeir was such a gracious host and we learnt so much not only about the area where we were but the history and Malaysian culture. I also have to mention the most amazing food that we got to enjoy at every meal. I will never forget the wonderful calls of the gibbons and hornbills. Some of the trees in the Forest are just incredible and are nature's sky-scrappers. These places are just so rare and special as is the need to protect them for future generations. There was nothing more enjoyable than floating down the river looking for the wonderful wild and birdlife that calls this area home. Thank you for a truly wonderful stay and for the treasured memories. …
What an experience we have had at the Earth Lodge in Ula Muda. Hynmeir and the lodge staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the environment and made sure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. Our wildlife highlights were watching elephants washing in the river, hearing the gibbons call in the canopy, listening to the hornbills fly overhead, seeing gliding gekos, and photographing the butterflies. We were reminded of the importance of protecting the forest as a water catchment and habitat and hope that Hynmeir's conservation work can thrive in the future with the support of the Malaysian government. This is not a typical tourist visit, it allowed us to spend time with an expert who could explain what we were seeing and share his passion for the natural world. We were also able to make friends with our fellow travellers and enjoy a shared experience. Thank you for an unforgettable stay!…
What an amazing experience from start to finish! We were all a little nervous how it would go from the trekking to the food etc but we needn’t have been. Hymeir and his team were so welcoming and the 3 days went far too quickly. We loved the river cruises every day and the trek through primary rainforest was a highlight. We actually slept really well and waking up to Gibbons and all the sounds of the rainforest was an experience we will never forget. The boys (16 & 17) coped with no communication and the food was delicious throughout! I would highly recommend a visit for families with teenage children! Thanks again!!!
Great tour! Hymeir is an absolute expert and explains you anything you want to know about the rainforest or the fauna living in it. The motto of the Earth Lodge is to reduce the effect of people visiting to a minimum. The trip is a little of an adventure, so expect nothing fancy. The huts are pretty basic, but perfectly fine for a nice stay. We really loved it out there in the wilderness. Food is also great. Overall 10/10!
We came to Ulu Muda knowing that it was going to be a camp/chalet-like experience. That was met, because the facilities though basic was very much livable and true to what a field research centre should be. with some insects at the corner of the bathroom, mozzies flying and limited electricity, it is all compensated when you wake up to the sound of the gibbons, hornbills and wildlife of the rainforest early in the morning. The one-hour boat ride from the Kuala Muda jetty will take you right into the only place you could live in this forest reserve. Get some sunscreen on and a cap for this midday boat ride. The evening cruise is the most enjoyable activity for all of us because we got to take our time to listen to the sounds, identify the animals, watch out for them in the trees and if lucky, spot the elephants. The jungle trekking was tiring, because of the many stops and we were busy ticking leeches off our bodies but it was an enriching experience. Wear leech socks and long sleeve shirts! Don’t be put off by the leeches because more leeches means there is a large amount of wildlife present. As our guide says, consider it forest tax! …
Our Trip in Ulu Muda was Perfect. The Location is Amazing, you have nothing around you, only the Jungle. We saw a lot of animals, and our favorite Animal too, Elefants!! Hymeir know a lot about the Jungle and the Animals. Its a Great Experience, we want to Come back! The Resort is nice and very clean, and they have Good Food :)! Greetings from Germany Nicolai & Melissa
The 4 day trip was amazing. We saw so many animals (elephants, birds, insects etc) and could also enjoy the landscape and plants. Hymeir is such a great guide. He knows nearly all animals and can give very interesting explanations. The tours are very well organized. Food and accommodation is basic/good, exactly what to expect from a jungle lodge. I can highly recommend the trip.
Wan as our boatman & guide 1.5 hours of Serenity boat trip & 1.5 hours of trekking to reach our majestic compact cave with a buddha alike statue The itinerary offers one of its kind in jungle exploration Do book for urself this earth lodge trip Once in a lifetime experience The best of the best
Last june we stayed for the 4d3n package at this amazing lodge. The fun already started when we arrived at the jetty and were picked up by Hymeir to take the boatride to the lodge. As the water was not very high our captain had to get out several times to keep the boat moving, but after a little more than an hour we arrived at this little paradise. We were very lucky as we were the only guests, so we had a private guide and a private cook/captain. The accomodation is indeed a bit basic, but everything you need is there. During our stay we did several boattrips and hikes and we also went tubing (this was much more relaxing than i expected). Hymeir can tell a lot about Ula Muda and all the wildlife surrounding the lodge and also about all the effort he is putting in conservation of Ula Muda. We were even part of his research team by counting the plain pouched hornbills flying by. As a bird watcher it was very nice to see so many of these very rare hornbills Next to this he is also very friendly and we had a lot of nice conversations during the dinners. For us staying in the lodge was the highlight of our trip and if you interested in relaxing stay with a lot of nature around you (yes leeches are included..), this is the place to be!…
We were glad that we visited Earth Lodge at Ulu Muda. It is a beautiful remote location and we realised that the moment we arrived at the jetty and as we traversed Muda lake and the river to reach the lodge. There's nothing like observing wildlife in their natural habitat. Though not easy in the rainforest and with some luck, we saw the majestic Asian elephants, langurs, long-tailed macaques, hornbills, raptors and a variety of other birds over 5D/4N. Other guests saw otters and even a terrapin. We felt that there was a good balance of activities and 'free & easy' time in the itinerary. It was fantastic that we had time to go exploring on our own around the lodge, during which time we spotted bats behind our dorm room, forest gecko, gliding lizards, agamid lizards, lantern bug, hammerhead worm, moths, butterflies and other insects. Treks were interesting as Hymeir, our host and guide, would share interesting facts and stories. We especially enjoyed the trek to 'Sira Air Hangat' (Hot Springs salt lick), a unique site that combine a hot springs and a salt lick. Leech socks are essential. We had our trusty football socks but were glad that we could borrow leech socks from Earth Lodge. Those leeches are a determined lot! We also had bites from sand flies. These are all minor irritations that come with the adventure :) All in all, it was a wonderful trip to an off the beaten path natural wonder. Thank you to Hymeir, Din and Zul of Earth Lodge!…
