Really nice hotel, big room, big confortable beds, big quiet pool with friends, free downtown transportation every hour. For breakfast, you have the choice between Starbuck or the Blind Pig foodtruck. You can also go to Ihop, great pancakes, about 10mn walk. Try the Outback restaurant for dinner, 10-15mn walk, amazing steaks!

On the positive side, I liked the location outside of the historic center of Key West and we used the free shuttle to get downtown to avoid the pain of parking. The pool was nice and the bar staff very attentive and helpful. The food truck has a limited menu but everything we tried was very good. The Gates is part of a 4-hotel complex and you can use the amenities in the other hotels; the Starbucks in the lobby of 24 was a very short walk for us.

On the negative side, the staff person at the front desk wanted to charge me $50 for checking in early (???), the bathroom lacked both a window and an exhaust fan so was constantly fogged up, and they were experiencing a shortage of wash cloths so we kept having to ask to get enough for the two of us.

The room was reasonably clean and the beds were comfortable, and despite overlooking the pool, it was not noisy at night.

Visited here with my mum and a couple of friends. We shared a family easy access room on the bottom floor with a pool view. The room was clean and lovely with a modern feel. We weren’t able to turn the air on off or down (on asking we were told you could only use the wall controls but no sign on the unit itself to just inform that) the fridge was warm (the water provided was room temp, I feel this should have been checked on cleaning) the room was booked for 4 people. Only 2 towels provided. Requested more and they were quickly delivered but the cleaners removed the extra two every day we were there, resulting in having to ask each day for new ones. Only enough smellies, coffee/cups and water for two each day. Tv info on channels not available to have to skip through each channel. These may all be small things but they become an inconvenience.
They do provide a great little service shuttle bus into the town which is super handy. On arrival we were issued some free cocktails. Again, only enough for two. Outdoor bar staff ignored us for quite some time in the evening and so ended up looking elsewhere.

We checked in on July 8th. The room was nice and the staff was friendly. The only problem I had was that our room was not cleaned once during the 8 day trip. I requested housekeeping several times and was told it was not available due to Covid-19. We left used towels and trash outside the door and called when we wanted towels, sheets and toilet paper. The website mentions their level of commitment to cleanliness.. Not true! I enjoyed Key West and may visit again...I will not art at the Gates.

This is a shout out to Dusti Rusher, complex hotel manager at The Gates Hotel/24 North.
Our stay was for the 3rd-7th of July. I can not speak as to the rest of the staff (which all seemed polite and helpful), but as far as Dusti goes, she was extremely helpful in getting us sorted out with a few requests which would have been completely understandable to not be able to accomplish. I can not understate how much of a help it was to us at that particular moment. Thank you. I feel if she can in anyway help or make something right, she will.

After reading a lot of these recent reviews I am left to wonder if there isn't something I am supposed to complain about. Truth is, we didn't spend a lot of time at the hotel. We also stayed at the Kimpton Fintch Lodge so I will use that stay to highlight some things we appreciated about The Gates hotel.

First off, parking. It comes with the room so no worries about trying to find a place to park or paying the $32 a day/$200 a month city car parking garage fees, plus the $4 per hour meter fee if you dare to drive around key west with your own vehicle. And that is if you can find a place to park. Did I mention having to walk a few blocks to your car park from the place you may be staying? Well, that is not an issue at the Gates hotel. You can park by your room and take the shuttle to lower key west. Our family of four found it much easier than the latter.

The hotel shuttle. Easy to use, was always on time.

Proximity to cheaper chain restaurants and grocery stores. After paying key west prices at a dozen or so lower keys "must eat" restaurants, all I can say is that I am not impressed.

Clean room and bedding. Our room was clean and spacious for what it was.

Concierge desk. Although many of our trips got cancelled due to hurricane Elsa, booking snorkeling, parasailing, and many other things was very easy through them.

Close to the NAS for military/retired mil.

My room complaint: Mini fridge wasn't really cold and adjusting dial did not help.

My biggest complaint was our room truly could have been cleaner when we arrived especially with COVID currently being active and the shuttle service forgot to pick up about 12 people on one night. However front desk staff was friendly and professional. I really wish I could remember the Hawaiian bar tenders name at rum row. But he was the absolute best!! My favorite from our entire trip in key west. The Concierge services were amazing they were very helpful in booking everything from our island adventures to bicycle and scooter rentals. We loved being able to use amenities from the sister hotels. So overall for a week long vacation there were minor hiccups (which should honestly be expected). If I could give it 4.5 I would.

The Gates Hotel had special meaning for us due to staying there overnight in January 2018 with our beloved Labrador Retriever, Hailey and was the only hotel we would stay at until this year.

We had traveled all day and were exhausted and in bed at 8:00 p.m. only to be awoken by rowdy guests next door who brought the party from Duvall back to the Gates.

I don't know how the front desk was not aware because our rooms were facing the pool, but I reported to the front desk and after about 15 more minutes someone showed up to ask them to move the party inside which was twice as bad since they started banging on all the walls with loud singing and loud music inside to further upset whomever reported them.

We reported to the front desk again and it took another half hour for someone to come which still didn't help except they stopped banging on the walls.

We had asked for late check-out the following day because our rental wouldn't be ready until 4:00 p.m. and ended up leaving at 9:00 a.m. without the free breakfast we were offered as a concession for our inconvenience and NO concession for being up all night after a long day of travel.

As an aside, we were disappointed to find none of the exceptional amenities there were in 2018 such as robes, big towels and quality shampoos, etc.

We also asked 3 months ahead of time for early check in, late check out and a 2nd floor room willing to pay all of the upcharges. I called the day before to be sure this was available and the front desk told me "no problem, it was all taken care of" only to be told at check-in at 1:00 p.m. our room would be ground floor and not available until 4:00 p.m.

Very disappointing Experience and will NEVER stay there again.

When we arrived the room was immaculate, clean, we had towels, coffee, what appeared to be soaps(shampoo, conditioner, body wash) in a pump in the shower, turned out these were empty. I had to ask the hotel multiple times for soaps. The second day, housekeeping came and refreshed our room, made our bed, took all of our hand towels/washcloths and gave us two new towels, but no hand towels. But no coffee, no waters.... We had to ask for coffee everyday and then we only got flavored coffees. Third day no housekeeping at all. Fourth day, we went to the desk and requested housekeeping by 2pm and was assured that it would happen. Came back to the hotel to find no housekeeping done, beds were still unmade, wet towels in the bathroom where we hoped that they would be picked up and replaced. On our way out that evening on the fourth day, we stopped and talked to the manager where we were told that housekeeping only happens every third day. WHAT! No-one told us that, not even the guy at the desk where we requested housekeeping, no signs in the room, nothing when we checked in, or on the pamphlet that was provided. Throughout our stay, we had to consistently request towels, coffee, soaps for the room. We only had a bath mat (rug) for the first night. Hand towels/washcloths for the first night, we didn't think of keeping them since most hotels replace them on a daily basis. We only received fresh towels(bath) on request. Also another amenity was free bottles of water daily, we only got the ones we received on the first day. So if you are coming to this hotel, I would bring your own coffee, soaps, and water. The floors were tiled, so if not swept daily, sand from beaches would ultimately find their way into bed. I wouldn't expect much in the way of service.

This was our first trip to the Keys and based on this hotel, we'll never go back. Our room was on the 2nd floor in the very back set of rooms. We stayed 2 nights. The hotel is an updated 1970's hotel. The shower head is so high up that you can't adjust it. You have to stand inside the shower to turn it on and you get hit with ice cold water and then the water only warms to lukewarm. The toilet seat was loose so my husband had to fix it. The bed is on slats and it's only a mattress, no box springs and about 18" off the floor. The elevator is wwaayy in the front of the first group of rooms so you have to carry your own luggage up the stairs to the 2nd floor. (We're seniors and that was VERY inconvenient.) You check in at the hotel next door as there isn't anywhere to check in at The Gates. The ice machine wasn't working in our area. When we spoke with the staff at the check in desk, they were rude and couldn't care less. I don't know what the room cost as I told my husband I didn't want to know how bad we were "robbed" (he said it was very expensive). This hotel is definitely not how it's pictured on its website. We stayed 2 nights and were happy to leave.

My name is Bridget Jurda, I recently visited The Gates Hotel Key West for the following days: 4/16-4/18. I booked two hotel rooms, one for my husband, and myself and one for my children. My room was fine, but the morning after our first night my son went to make his bed only to find a brown stain, which looked very much like feces. That morning he went to the lobby and let the woman at the front desk know and she had someone change the sheets about 20 minutes later. Although the sheets were changed, the fact that my son had to sleep in feces at a hotel that I paid for is quite horrible. I am very dissatisfied with our experience. I have pictures of the feces stain as well as a video of the dust-filled room. I feel that by changing the bed sheets that’s not enough. I will add that the ice bucket in the room did not have a plastic bag for the ice also the TV remote did not have a plastic over it like my room had. The bathroom could have been cleaner. The room was very dusty. The room was not cleaned. The room having the most issues was 209 my sons room. i have a photo and i also have video of hot dusty the room was. I am not happy with our visit to the hotel. I don't like to complain but I needed to in this case.

The Gates is not too far from Smathers Beach but I do not think it's walking distance, especially during the summer months. There are not a lot of beaches in Key West and I think this is the only public beach. There are a couple of hotels in old town that have their own private small beaches.

I'm not sure of the measurement but it was big enough for two people to move around not on top of each other, it was a standard room size I guess you would say.
