Amara Cay Resort is lauded for its inviting atmosphere, with many guests enjoying the intimate pool, tiki bar, and variety of activities. The hotel's fresh decor and spacious rooms, complete with Keurig machines, also receive positive remarks. However, some travelers note discrepancies regarding value, citing overpricing and additional costs for amenities. While the hotel's cleanliness generally meets expectations, a few guests have called out issues with room maintenance and service responsiveness. Despite this, the friendly and attentive nature of the staff is often highlighted.

We stayed five nights as a base for exploring the keys. The resort is well positioned, roughly midway along the keys. Overall, we had a pleasant stay; however, I felt the resort was overpriced—we paid $558 per night, room only, including taxes and resort fees.

Rooms: spacious, clean, comfortable beds. The room had an adjoining door to access the adjacent room. The guests in the room next door tried on a number of occasions to open that door from their side. I found this unsettling, and I would have been frightened if I were travelling alone. Please consider adding a bolt to the inside of the room to safeguard guests.

Parking: ample, included in the resort fee.

Food: We only ate breakfast here once—it was okay. We spent most days up and out early, so we did not eat lunch or dinner here.

Drinks: TikTok bar by the pool and lobby bar. They have good drinks.

Staff: pleasant and friendly.

Pool and beach: Clean towels are available at the poolside. The beach is more of a dock with sand on top, which is not great for swimming or kids but great for fishing. Kayak and paddleboards are available for free. The pool is clean. The main issue was fellow guests reserving the pool loungers they were not using. One morning, we came down at 8 am, and the majority of the loungers were reserved, and no one was around. One gentleman came down at 10 am and removed his family's belongings from the loungers as they had decided to go out for the day; others reserved the beds but did not come to use them until lunchtime or later, which was very unfair for the guests that came down to use the pool.

We didn't use the shuttle as we had a car, but we did use the Rum Runner to visit the other resorts, which was fun. The crew gave some interesting info about the keys' history. Three Waters Resort is larger and has a couple of pools, a nice beach with shallow water for kids to paddle, and a selection of bars/restaurants—I recommend a visit.

Shops: The trading point store is nearby, and the Publix supermarket is about 2- 3 miles away.

Dear Niwc, Your kind words have us smiling from ear to ear, and we’re delighted to learn of your memorable stay. We're thrilled to know that our resort impressed, and that our new Rum Runner water taxi allowed you to enjoy a phenomenal visit to our sister resort of Three Waters. We sincerely apologize for any disruption from other guests, and we trust that our team responded promptly when these concerns were brought to our attention. We encourage you to hurry back for a visit that truly exceeds your expectations in the months ahead, and we wish you all the best until then. With sun and sea, Sarah Will Resort Manager

Pretty lobby and good size rooms, but like many other reviewers I agree it is not worth the price. These hotels that try to be on the luxury end with higher prices and "resort fees" just are not living up to expectations. They are still operating under covid protocols with restricted cleaning and are clearly understaffed, which is understandable, but they do nothing to manage pricing and capacity to adjust to their staffing which just leads to their inability to keep up and meet guests' needs. They cannot keep enough towels clean to serve the pool and rooms, you are still stuck taking out your own garbage and managing all your own linens and cleaning, and we found dirty sheets on the sofa bed when we checked in which is not acceptable at the prices they charge. It is a perfectly fine hotel at a lower price and lower expectations.

Communal areas all very nice. Rooms quite basic. Staff friendly but not very helpful. We had an issue with our bed - asked at reception a few times and never got resolved. Room service would do just the basics - had to call down for them to bring up more soap etc as the bottles they have in the rooms are tiny but they never replaced them when empty.

I only give it two stars because the outdoor amenities and views were breathtaking.
Upon arrival, there was blood on the floor in our room as well as on the sheets. Once our concern was brought to the front desk, they did change the sheets but never cleaned the floor. Our tv in the room was stuck on max volume so you could not even turn it on. After again bringing concern to front desk regarding tv not functioning and a random person's blood on the floor, we were told "I am so sorry but housekeeping is gone for the day so we don't have anyone to clean your room and engineering already did everything they could with your tv so it should be fixed"...no offer for another room or even offer me a mop to clean it myself and clearly they did not fix our tv or I would not be complaining again. Very disappointed with the lack of courtesy provided by the staff. I paid $700 for two nights and could've stayed in a much cheaper place and likely had better service/cleaner environment. Unfortunate.

We have never stayed at a hotel with friendlier staff than Amara Cay! Every staff person we passed in the hallways, or had contact with during our four day, stay was extremely friendly, helpful, and smiling.
The beach area was kept up very nicely, the sand was nice, and the landscaping was beautiful. We saw dolphins, rays, jellyfish, a sea hare, mini fish, and of course, pelicans, ibis and egret all from the beach. We enjoyed the kayaking and saw a sea turtle while out there on the blue water. The pool area was beautiful and the water was warm. The only mildly negative comment I have is that drip coffee in the coffee bar was six dollars a cup. There are complementary Keurig in the rooms, so I would make use of those next time and buy some creamer for the room. The decor of our room was simple, fresh and nice and it was wonderful to not have carpet. Hard floors seem so much more sanitary. The lobby decor was absolutely beautiful, everything was very clean.

I was so excited to stay here for my birthday trip and it was such a disappointment. The room we got was the one on the first floor right by the reception desk facing the parking lot! Asked to be moved and was told that we would be contacted when another room opened up (we were staying 3 nights). Never happened. We couldn't open our curtains because then everyone in the parking lot would see us, so it was extremely dark. Our room was never cleaned, even though I took the sign off the door, which I thought was just a do not disturb sign. Apparently on the other side is the maid service sign, and that's the only way anyone will clean your room. I constantly stay in hotels for work and everyime, if there's no sign, they clean your room. So my husband went to the front desk to ask about it and that's what he was told. He said the garbage was full and she told him he could dump it outside! So with a $40 a day resort fee, we didn't get a clean room and took out our own trash, while the employees who were on their break stared at him. Despite walking by the front desk constantly to get to our room, we were never acknowledged. Every morning, we waited at least 10 minutes for someone to come help us so we could order coffee. One day, a lady who said she has been coming here for years told us this place has really gone downhill and she wouldn't be coming back. Same with us! We will not come back here. There are a million places to stay that are beautiful, so why would I come back, when it is obvious that guests are not valued here. It is like we were invisible the whole time and that is not an exaggeration. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

We paid 600$ per night for an oceanfront room, and were shocked at the condition of it when we arrived. The bathroom had stains and black mold all over the tiles, stains in the shower, and the mirror covered in rust spots (I recommend wearing sandals in these showers, we did). The balcony had bird droppings everywhere, as well as used match sticks - obviously having not been swept or cleaned. Our phone was broken completely open, we had to reassemble it. For the price of the hotel, we were shocked to learn that there was absolutely no food service after 8pm, and were told we had to leave the resort to find food….seriously? At a resort? We ordered room service in the morning (took four calls) and when it was delivered by SECURITY, we were told it was sent to the wrong room. Room Service is sent in a styrofoam container with plastic utensils, packed into a plastic bag…I’ll add we made an environmental donation when reserving to “keep the Keys clean”….the irony is not lost on me….the front desk girls were as nice as they could be given their obvious challenges and fatigue, but more often than not it was hard to find anyone who worked at the hotel. Our last note is about the checkout experience - housekeeping knocked on our door at 9:30am to tell us it was checkout day and asked if we are leaving yet…I honestly thought it was a prank, and confirmed checkout was at 11am. She then said yes and remained in the doorway, and again asked when we were leaving…When we get to the desk and close the bill, we are told roads are closed for the next few hours but we can remain at the resort if we wish….why not communicate that to us beforehand, instead of rushing us out of our room nearly two hours before we paid for? Service at the Tiki bar is honestly the only positive experience we had at this resort, if it wasn’t for the amazing service we had there we would probably be leaving 1 star…this property is just not at the level it should be for what they are charging :(

Greetings, It brightens our day to see that you enjoyed remarkable service at the tiki bar. However, this was not reflected in other aspects of your visit. For that, we apologize. The condition of your room is not reflective of the high standards we have in place. This matter will be addressed with our housekeeping team. We have a lot to look into and you can be confident that we will determine what went wrong and prevent it from happening again. We know that we can do better and welcome another chance to prove this. Not exactly 4 star hotel, we booked through Booking.com and feel totally overcharged for our pre paid stay.

The lobby and bar areas have clearly been upgraded to welcome clients.

We were a standard king room with new decor, overlooking the roof of the lobby/ bar area, room 309- to have a better view would have cost $40 per night plus tax etc, etc.
Also our TV preferred channel 4, even after reporting the problem.

The Air Conditioning needs a complete upgrade…..it’s so noisy when on!

The menus are good but very expensive and so we chose to drive north, 4 mins to Mangrove Mikes for breakfast and walk 4 mins South to Lazy Days for happy hour and our evening meal.
…..they will cook your own catch of the day!!

Sorry Amara Cay & its staff .. but you completely lack atmosphere….the hub of any hotel is its lobby bar and pool/beach bar and the happy staff that ‘want’ to chat to clients.

We received none of this.

We received a text and also a note pushed under the door about the Fire Alarm drill Wednesday at 10am….however, this did NOT tell us where the assembly point was!

My hubby being a retired Health & Safety Officer thought this to be very odd.

Is it not a Fire Regulation that should be attached to the back of your hotel door that shows you where to assemble in the event of a fire?
Ours did not have this.

Best thing for us was the Rum Runner Free boat service to the sister hotels: La Siesta and Three Waters.
Our Captain was Mike and Captains Mate was Ryan…such friendly guys taking us up/down the coast, sharing lots of stories and encouraging all aboard to share stories too, plus Captain Mikes music selection was awesome!
Thank you guys!

First off I want to say the marketing team is fantastic! At the time of booking we were so excited and had high hopes as this was our first visit to the keys. Upon arrival we were severely disappointed. It is not a RESORT. It is basically a holiday inn with a tiki bar and tables in the lobby called a restaurant. The website boast private beach access, When in fact it is a man made platform covered in sand at the sea wall with a tiny roped off swimming area accessed by a ladder. If you plan to get in the water bring water shoes. The whole area is covered in seaweed and algae. There is no actual beach. The website also mentions 4 on-site restaurants when in fact there is only reel catch with a limited menu serving the lobby, tiki bar and room service. The tiki bar has a very small selection for cocktails. You pay $35 daily for a resort fee for access to pool towels, bottled water and a shuttle which we tried multiple times to utilize during our stay and didn’t get the opportunity as we stood in the lobby in line for over thirty minutes without being acknowledged and at that point gave up and drove as a lot of restaurants close their wait list 1-2 hours before closing and we wouldn’t have been able to go to dinner has we continued to wait. Absolutely nothing dries in the rooms for some reason there is always moisture even with using the fan and drying off completely before stepping out of the shower you have to hang things off of the balcony to dry. My husband hung up his tshirt that got rained on the day of our arrival on a towel hook in the bathroom and it was still damp when we packed up 6 days later. As house keeping doesn’t enter your room due to the pandemic we requested clean sheets/linens 3 times and never received them. The same sheets for 6 nights. Also don’t bother booking to pay extra for early check in and late check out as it is not guaranteed. When we arrived I was rudely told it wasn’t a thing but it was okay because our room was ready this time. We then inquired about late check out as we had planned our flights around these times and were told we would have to call the front desk and ask if there was availability at 6 am the morning we left. When we did I was told housekeeping didn’t get there until 8 so call back later and to be told they’d let us check out one hour late at 12 pm only it have someone barge into our room at 11 am and then go oh well just come back later. Waking up at 6 am defeats the purpose of wanting to sleep in and enjoy your last of vacation. Severely disappointed and will not be returning.

We're disappointed to learn that your experience was not what it should have been. We apologize for any lapse in service. Providing exceptional hospitality is a top priority and though our staff is doing our best, wait times are longer than usual due to the resort being busier than it has been in years. We are operating at high occupancy levels and working to resolve the issue. It's also unfortunate that our property did not meet your expectations. All beaches in the Florida Keys are man-made. For walk-in beaches, our guests may go to our sister resorts Postcard Inn, Pelican Cove, and La Siesta. Our team will discuss each of your comments as we continually strive to improve. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for giving us the opportunity to host you. We truly hope that we will have the chance to change your perceptions on a future stay. Safe travels

We stayed for 3 nights in late July as part of our trip down the Florida Keys. Of the 3 places we stayed in (Key Largo, Key West, and Islamorada), this place was by far the best resort and location. We would love to come back at some stage.

The room was spacious and had a fantastic view, with the balcony providing a view over the grounds and the ocean.

We had drinks during happy hour, sampling great cocktails and local craft beers.
Breakfast was so filling, well presented, and very tasty, but we only had it once as we wanted to sample other places.

We spent a lot of time relaxing by the pool and are and drank in the Tiki Bar. The fish tacos were amazing, and the Italian sandwich was full of flavour and tasted great. Again, the staff were attentive and extremely helpful.

We used the shuttle to take us to and back from a local brewery one night - great service - and very reliable. Overall, it was a fantastic stay and one we want to repeat one day.
