Detailed Reviews
We stayed 3 days and 2 nights at Sakau Backpackers B&B. There are a lot of places to choose from to stay at in this area, many with similar names. We stayed as a group of 10, booking 4 x rooms, with 2 x families. Youngest aged 9 years. We had our own vehicle and booked tours and meals separately. We ended up doing all tours and eating all meals at the B&B. We were able to be flexible and decide our itinerary while at the B&B. Morning and afternoon river cruises were 2 hours duration each, 6am and 4pm start. Night cruise 7.30pm start. Cruises 60 MYR each, children under 12 yrs half price. Did jungle walk too. It was a bit of a work out uphill and through great vegetation. 30 MYR. Great walk. So glad we did it. Lots of mosquitoes so take the insect repellent. The B&B provides sausage, egg, toast, bake beans for breakfast included in 75 MYR room cost. Rooms are chalet style, basic, clean and comfortable. Beers 12 MYR and softdrink 4 MYR are on sale until 8pm with tea and coffee available all the time free of charge. Lunch and dinner was tasty, home cooking. Local beef/chicken dishes, rice and veg with fruit after. The meals we all thought were absolutely delicious, using whole food and local ingredients in a buffet set out for 20 MYR per person. They cooked plain omelette at the request of 1 person in our group. There is a small well stocked convenience store with groceries locals seem to access about 50 M from B&B. Cold drinks, ice creams, insect repellent, torches, water, crisps...anything we needed we found there. Found the staff at B&B to be friendly and accommodating. Would recommend to others. Jan and Lan were excellent boatman and guides on the river.

We spent 3 nights here in 2 rooms.
The place is well located - close to the mole, from where you take both out on the river and the area where the cabins are located is quite fine. There is a small shop at the mole where you can buy ice cream etc.
The rooms so much need a loving hand. The curtains hang in laser, the pillows are hard and nasty, the bathroom has a fine water heater, but the whole floor and toilet gets wet when taking a bath. Ok AC - it could not completely cool the room down in the middle of the day, but at night it went fine.
The food was ok - there was enough of it for everyone and it was filled up. For breakfast there was toast bread, margarine and jam + noodles or rice, there was also served 1 mirror and 1 chicken sausage per person (fresh made to the table). We never found a way to buy drinks, but before arrival we had been told that there was no beer on site, so we had them ourselves and were allowed to store in a refrigerator at the reception.
The best thing was the water dispenser, which had a filter so that there was no need to use plastic all the time - and then it could make really cold water (when it worked, there were just a few days when it broke down all the time, and then there was no drinking water available).
No wifi, but I had nice 4g connection.

I booked a 3d/2n package directly with the lodge and communication was smooth. The only exception was that I specifically requested size 45 rubber boots for the jungle walk by email but these werent available when I got there. Ended up having to wear my running shoes and cleaning them afterwards.
The room is comfortable although a power socket by the bed would make it even better. Plenty of hot water in the shower and good pressure. Towel was a little stained but seemed clean. A/c worked well.
One thing to be aware of is that this lodge is very close to the road so you will hear cars regularly while in the room. It doesn't feel remote at all until you go out on a river cruise. The cruises were great and we spotted plenty of animals (elephants, orang utan, monkeys, colourful birds, baby crocodiles).
The staff were all amazingly helpful and friendly.
The weakest attribute was the food. It consisted of tiny portions of chicken with rice and vegetables. Only had dessert with one out of three meals and it consisted of 6 tiny bananas. Breakfast consisted of noodles, fried egg, one small sausage and sliced bread on the first morning and second morning was the same but without the noodles. They should seriously consider offering a meal upgrade option....something I would have happily paid 200 ringgit for.
All in all, this place offers excellent value for money and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

With a couple of details they would improve a lot. For example, on arrival the bathroom was dirty (dirty cup and the floor full of dead bugs and mud, you could tell they had not cleaned it).
The room is spacious and pleasant with air conditioning.
The pillows very high and hard and like a sheet there is a kind of towel.
Sometimes we ran out of water throughout the complex. No wifi.
We booked the 3-day, 2-night package for 550 ringgits, including 4 boat cruises and 1 jungle hike, plus accommodation and meals.
To say that the guide Lan who took the night cruise was very good, it was impressive how he could see the animals!
The other guide with whom we made the rest of the cruises was less careful, and one detail that we did not like is that he smoked during the cruises. If you're in the wild you don't want to have someone next door smoking with a sniff of tobacco and we didn't want to look at where those cigars ended up.
In short, with a little cleaning and dedication the experience would improve a lot.

We stayed overnight here and enjoyed 3 river cruises, 1 dinner, and 1 breakfast.
Although we spent next to no time in our rooms, we were happy to find them to be clean! The bed was actually really comfortable!
The meals were basic but tasty, filling, and just what we needed when on the go. Upon checking in, the staff even enquired about allergies and dietary requirements, showing a nice level of care and attention.
Our guide was Alsam (sorry if I got that slightly wrong, I’m so bad with names) and he was a rockstar! On our first cruise alone we saw 3/5 of the big five!!! He was so knowledgable about the local area and its inhabitants. I loved how he was able to answer pretty much any question we had!
Things which didn’t bother us, but you might want to note: no WiFi, cash only, towels are provided but bring your own toiletries or purchase them from the on-site store.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and experiences here, hope you do too!

This place is falling apart, completely run down. The garden is nice and from outside the huts look ok, once you go inside it's just indescribable. Mold everywhere, almost no water pressure, etc. They could make it so much better with so little (painting the walls, new mattresses and beds would do it) but instead they are building new huts across the road.
Meals are basic but ok, the biggest problem again is lack of cleanliness around. The state of the cups they provide is unbelievable (once again, with very little they could provide new cups as the ones they provide are by no means presentable). The reception is abandoned except during meal times and they sell no drinks there.
The only good thing apart from the garden, was the tour guide. Nice, very knowledgeable and paying close attention to any animals around.
We decided to leave one day earlier.

Super nice people, wonderful environment to wake up among the monkeys. The food is very tasty. They organize boat trips on the river themselves and John (a man with a lot of humor) told us very interesting things. We were given binoculars and he offered to take photos himself. Very good base for exploring the river. There is a quiet, cozy atmosphere. 100% recommended!

We stayed for one night in this Bed and breakfast. It’s to the river and not too big. In the afternoon we take a river tour which also booked at the B&B. They served a diner wich was very tasteful. The beds a comfortable and the rooms clean but simple.
The people over there were friendly and helpful. In the morning also a breakfast witch was simple but oke.

Nice simple and adequate place. The mustang is the boat trip I recommend more than one we had a super nice and competent guide, a young guy who lives in Sandakan with an American name. It energized us and showed us many animals. Congratulations recommended

A fairly basic room but the bed is surprisingly comfy. Everyone there is so friendly and the food is amazing. We had 3 river tours (afternoon, night and morning) and saw all sorts of wildlife. We saw 3 out of the big Borneo 5 on the first river tour (crocodile, rhinoceros hornbill and proboscis monkey)! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and great at pointing things out and getting the best angle to see. Great value for money!
