We have been traveling to Sun Valley for 15 years. We always stay at the classic old school iconic lodge. I was utterly shocked to walk in and see such a sad remodel. What a missed opportunity. There is no more soul. TheDuchin room has...More
Since Averell Harriman had the perspicacity to build a resort in the Wood River Valley, the Lodge has been a famous destination. The halls feature pictures of celebrities through decades. I worried that the most recent remodel would ruin it. But the rooms are lovely:...More
This was my first time to Sun Valley, and I would be back in a heart beat to stay at this resort.
I did come in the off season, and it was unseasonably cold for mid-September. The great thing about Sun Valley is there is...More
I stayed here for a conference. I really loved the area. It is a great place to unplug and relax. The room was great, the hotel was wonderful, and the grounds/scenery were unbelievable. I loved the little shops that surround the hotel, the pool is...More
We booked our reservation on Trip Advisor for the Sun Valley Lodge. When we arrived and checked in we were given a room at the Sun Valley Inn. A huge difference! Next time we will book direct...our stay was still very nice!

First I should point out that the only area you can remotely "ski in and out" at Sun Valley is the Warm Springs side of the mountain. I personally don't like that side as it smells horribly of Sulphur and I'm not sure there is even a hotel there (mostly condos and homes.
I have owned a place in Sun Valley (off Elkhorn road), so we have never taken the bus, but have observed many doing using this mode so here we go:
Sun Valley Lodge is the original iconic resort in Ketchum/Sun Valley. Many people like to stay there for the history, ice rink, little village, spa, etc. You didn't mention the ages of your group, however, if there are kids involved, this would be the place to stay. They had a major renovation a few years back. On top of that, you would have lodge transportation to the mountain instead of standing at the bus stop. It is about 5 minutes to the base of River Run where you will start skiing. (If you have small kids that will ski on Dollar Mountain you will be even closer to Dollar if you stay at Sun Valley Lodge)
I would say the next best option would be the new Limelight hotel/resort. It is located on Main Street/Hwy75 and would be even closer to the lifts (6 blocks?) I think this was there first season open and saw they had their own shuttles delivering guests up to the mountain. This area is the town of Ketchum (Sun Valley is the town where Sun Valley Lodge is located, however the ski area is also in Ketchum (just owned by the Sun Valley Company). I personally think the best restaurants in the area are in Ketchum proper and the town has nice shops.
Bottom line, if it were me, I would book at Sun Valley Lodge or adjacent Sun Valley Inn. DO make sure you dine in town (The Pioneer Saloon, Knob Hill Grill, Globus are a few of our .) You can easily cab there from anywhere in the valley.

We were there in the summer for only one night, but we observed the mountain is very near but not ski in-ski out. The hotel shuttle can take you. The Lodge is wonderful if pricey. We did not check out other hotels, though I noticed a Best Western in Ketchum that looked nice. We can recommend Ketchum Grill for dinner and Christina's for breakfast/lunch. It is a very upscale community; I think most of the hotels and restaurants are probably very good.
