Crossbasket & Estate History The tower of Crossbasket was erected in the early 15th century, and was a jointure, or dower-house of the Lindsays of Dunrod whose principal residence was the slightly earlier Mains Castle. John Lindsay of Dunrod had been granted the lands of Kilbride by King Robert the Bruce in 1382 after the estate had been forfeited by the Comyns who had fought against the King. Lindsay was the successor to James Lindsay who had assisted the King in killing John III Comyn, Lord of Badenoch - also known as Red Comyn. Crossbasket remained in the hands of the Lindsays until the beginning of the seventeenth century, when the extravagance of Alexander of Dunrod ruined the family and caused the alienation of the estates. By 1747, the Castle was in the possession of the Peter family, who had acquired it from John Kincaid in the first decade of the 18th century. Kincaid himself had purchased the property in 1661. The most notable member of the Peter family, and resident of Crossbasket, was Thomas Peter who was the Dean of Guild of Glasgow from 1708-9, perhaps purchasing and moving to Crossbasket after this date. A later generation of Peter was a Lieutenant-General, and it is thought that the distinctive General's Bridge of 1790 nearby was either built by or named after him. Crossbasket House was occupied by many families during the 19th century including Alexander Downie, John Caddell, and most famously by the inventor and raincoat manufacturer, Charles Macintosh (1766–1843). Charles Macintosh was the celebrated inventor of waterproof cloth used in the manufacture of raincoats. Many of his experiments involved dyes and, as the mill on the River Calder at the rear of the house was originally constructed as a dye mill. By 1878, ownership of the Castle passed from Charles Macintosh to Alexander Downie and then John Cabbell. The latter sold the castle to Robert Clark. His son, James Clark was a partner in the Glasgow textile and trading company James Finlay & Co. He died at Crossbasket in 1876, and his son, John Kerr Clark continued the Clark family ownership of the castle until 1891 when it was sold to George Neilson and it was under the ownership of George Neilson that the building we recognise today was formed. The pattern of ownership continued. The merchant Thomas Dunlop Findlay owned the property from just after World War 1 until 1932 when it was sold to James Little. James Little donated the Castle to Dr Barnardo's homes around 1945. In the 1960s the James Little College was established at Crossbasket as a further education centre in Scotland. The Castle was sold in 1981 to the Latter Rain Ministries who ran the property as the Crossbasket Christian Centre until 2005. It was then sold to a developer with plans to turn the building into a series of apartments. After the developer went into administration, the building lay empty and near derelict until 2011, when it was then bought by current owners Steve and Alison Reid-Timoney who have invested £9m into transforming it into the luxurious hotel and event venue which it is today.

On a wet weekend in January we arrived and were met at the car by the receptionist who was completely unfazed by our 12 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback who was staying with us. After a welcome tour of the hotel we brought our dog into the hotel and was greeted enthusiastically by the staff that we met. Although we had a small double this was a very good size room for the three of us.
Our dog was quite happy with travelling in the lift and stayed in our room whilst we had dinner.

Our booking included Dinner but there was the option of having the tasting menu with accompanying wines. The food, wines and service was excellent as was breakfast the next morning. A big thank you to all the staff we met. It was a great night away!

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner with wine tasting at Crossbasket Castle Hotel last night, Thursday 6th August.
Covid protocols were very impressive, we were one of only ten tables for two people in the large ballroom.
The dinner was delicious, all staff were extremely courteous and well trained and Guy from Inverarity Morton wines was very informative.
A very high standard three course dinner with welcome drink and different wines with each course was excellent value for £45.
We would highly recommend Crossbasket Castle and intend to return.

Very covid secure throughout without being overpowering

On arrival the building itself is stunning and all the better for being relatively close to the city. Everything about this place shouts 5 starts and I would have happily awarded them this but for their "upselling" activities prior to arrival which were not followed through.

I normally delete all the emails about chocolates in the room or champagne or paid upgrades but in this instance I decided to pay for a room upgrade which was confirmed by email. On arrival we were shown to a fantastic room that was huge with a big bed, lovely views of the grounds, great bathroom and also very clean. It took a while to realise it was in fact the original room that we had booked, not the upgrade we booked and paid for. Having had a very long drive we decided to stay put however if you sell a service in advance and confirm that service it is inexcusable not to deliver.

The reason we booked was because of the Roux restaurant and we were delighted with the dining room itself, the excellent menu and the service. It was expensive but really was treat and one I would recommend for a special occasion . The hotel itself was a bonus and again for a special occasion certainly worth considering.

I will certainly go back here and if I happen to be seduced into paying for an extra service I will make sure they deliver on their promise.

This is truly a beautiful property. We are staying here now. It is truly a gem. The rooms are well appointed with a antique and modern furniture, bathroom is huge and so pretty with high end toiletries, there are no coffee and tea in the room, but they deliver the hospitality tray upon request with some cookies and milk. Beds are as expected- covered with luxurious linens and are very comfy
Breakfast menu is extensive and luxurious and breakfast is included.
The personal is simply wonderful . This is recently renovated, but well preserved beautiful mansion
It is pricey and is a splurge but well worse it

I've intended to visit your stunning venue since your opening in 2016. I heard nothing but rave reviews but I got to experience that first hand today. When I decided to take my Mum and Aunty for a spot of lunch in my summer week off. On a rainy July day we forgot about Lockdown for a while. The Staff reassured us about the safety precautions taken as soon as we got to the grand reception hall. Throughout the lunch we were served with the safest measures which made us feel at ease. We made up for months of not being able to dine out with a tasty lunch in opulent surroundings and a traditional interior. I actually forgot I was in between Blantyre and East Kilbride and it reminded me of other castes I've visited including Black Watch Castle in Perth and Inverary Castle. So least I know for future if I want some Castle time in life - I don't have to travel too far!

I stayed in the Cabbell Room which was fit for a Princess with luxurious gold fabric above the bed and stunning floral drapes surrounding the bumped out window. Perfectly ripe tangerines sat in a decorative bowl next to a selection of bottled water and there was a lovely little river that runs along the edge of the property. It's not a long walk but there are a couple of places to sit and enjoy the fresh air and peaceful rambling water. The beautifully scented soaps in the bathroom were put to good use after an amazing day of adventures. Everyone was so nice and friendly. I would absolutely return.

As a venue for an afternoon tea, Crossbasket Castle is a suitably impressive setting. Unconventionally, the sitting room where you take tea isn't filled with dining tables and chairs. Instead, you sit on plushy old sofas around low coffee tables, holding your plate in your lap in true period fashion. While we received a menu for the teas available, Crossbasket doesn't provide a menu for the tray of sweets and savoury dishes, so when the server left the display stand with us without a word we eventually ventured into the hall to ask if we could be told what we were eating. We also had to ask for champagne and we weren't offered any water. At this level, these things should be a given so there was a little disappointment. Having said all that, the afternoon tea itself was of a very good standard. Weighted more towards the sweet than the savoury - there were only three finger sandwiches and a mini-quiche as savoury options - it was very tasty. The pastries and cakes are faultlessly presented with even the tiny scones having delightful textures. We were also given plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or like we'd outstayed our welcome, taking our time to enjoy both the food and our surroundings over an (eventual) glass of fizz.

Crossbasket Castle is a really a hidden gem of a hotel on the outskirts of East Kilbride. The building itself is magnificent and our room was both spacious and tastefully decorated. Breakfast was was very tasty. Given the current Covid restrictions all menus and much of the hotel information is now on an App; which once we navigated our way around was fairly simple to use. Staff were attentive and our bar meal was beautifully presented and extremely tasty. Really 11 out of 10.

The grounds are beautifully laid out and a walk to the river is extremely relaxing. It was nice to local children from the nursery school using the grounds.

One point of concern was enforcement of covid regulations on Afternoon Tea guests. I was concerned when a party of 6 young women apparently for more than two households were seated that in the lounge, near us. Whilst I understand that management had requested and received verbal confirmation they were from only two homes I would have more felt more secure if proactive checks similar to those carried out on young looking people trying to buy alcohol had been carried out. However, we were re-seated away from the party.

This is the only reason this isn't a 5 star review as i feel this feature could be improved upon.

In other respects the hotel was very covid secure and took the pandemic seriously.

Dear Alanthebairn, Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay with us at Crossbasket Castle. I am delighted to read the positive feedback regarding our team, the building and the food you enjoyed from our lounge menu. We are taking the Covid pandemic very seriously and take every precaution to ensure that our guests and staff remain safe at all times when visiting the castle. When guests make reservations with us for either lunch, dinner or afternoon tea, our reservations team actively ask how many household the party is for prior to confirming bookings. We make calls to everyone reserved to dine with us a few of days before arrival and again check the number of households in attendance. Then again on arrival we ask for contact details for track and trace purposes and ask for the number of households within the party. There has to be an element of trust that the information we receive is correct from our guests and as many people do not have identification registered to their current address for numerous reasons, we feel that we are doing our utmost to follow the letter of the law by the triple checks we have in place. I do hope that given the high praise you have provided for the rest of your stay with us, that you do have the opportunity to come back to stay with us again in the future. Wishing you and your family well during these uncertain times. Kind regards Rob Baird General Manager

We stayed here for one night, and had the tower suite. The pictures online do not do it justice! It's four floors, each floor accessed by a spiral staircase. There were three toilets and two TVs, (one in the bedroom and one in the sitting room) if one felt the need to get some space. The main bathroom was the size of a small house. The bed was easily the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever been in.

The food was spectacular, as was to be expected. The staff were friendly and accommodating, and this really pleased me, as I was worried such an amazing place would have stuffy staff.

I can't wait to get back again! Thank you to all.

What a gem of a place! This beautiful small hotel, with only 9 rooms and a couple of stone built gatehouses, is stunning. Set amidst the hurly burly of South Lanarkshire and close to East Kilbride, you’d think you were deep in the countryside when sitting on the terrace listening to the fountain and sipping something cold and fizzy🥂. The welcome was excellent and our room was colossal… I’ve had hotel rooms which were smaller than the bathroom we had! Everything is very tastefully and traditionally decorated, and the opportunity to relax in the big roll-top bath was not to be missed ( there was also a double sized stand alone shower). We had booked for one of their wine tasting dinners… a Taste of Tuscany… both food and wine were excellent, and the chap who introduced the wines was very knowledgable and interesting. Breakfast was also excellent, and the service throughout was professional and attentive. Definitely a five star experience, and one we will be repeating!

I am the exception here! I have some mobility problems (walk with a crutch after spinal surgery), so I just booked a car online - walked out the front door of Glasgow Central and they deposited me 25 mins later at the front door of the hotel. £25 - well worth the absence of stress!
