We got a private room with bathroom attached. It is above the dining area and very convenient to get our meals. The room was clean and there is a nice view of the rock face and waterfall. The only setback was the light in the bathroom was not working. Don't expect to get a hot shower.
Overall my stay was very pleasant. I have been coming here every year. Service good. food also good but I think there's too much MSG added to the food but I could be wrong. The electricity was the biggest let down and needs to be seriously improved. Plus the dining area had leakages - water dripping down. But generally it was pleasant, good staff working there, especially the Manager.
Having climbed my fair share of mountains, I was astounded by how clean, beautiful and well put together Laban Rata Resthouse was! It was by far the nicest accommodation I've ever had on a mountain climb. With beautiful decor, comfy beds and clean everything, plus the stunning views from the common room, it truly felt like a real hotel in the sky! They even had showers (cold, but still, pretty fancy for being on a mountain.) My only complaint is, of course, the asolutely exhorbidant price, which you have to pay if you want to climb the mountain. That's not the lodge's fault at all, just the price you pay to do Kinabalu. All in all, well worth the experience and I'd practically stay here again just because it was so nice
We stayed here before climbing to the summit of Mt Kinabalu. The six-bed dorm we were allocated was basic and the gap between top bunk / ceiling minimal. That said, the group was buzzing ahead of the climb, so sleep was always going to be minimal. A cold shower, although not always good, was very welcome in this instance. The bathroom area (separate toilet / shower rooms) was clean enough overall. There was a buzz in the communal area before everyone grabbed an early night, whilst the outdoor balcony offered fantastic sunset views.
Perfect spot to get your head down before summit climb. Big selection on food and all tasty. There was even a game of volleyball on the go in the evening. Yes the water is freezing so shower only for the brave. I opted for a freshen up using a cloth and bar of soap. As for people complaining of rooms being cold I would disagree. In my dorm there were 2 from UK, 1 from Finland and 1 from Switzerland. I slept in my thermals just so I had less clothes to carry and I was using them for summit climb and I was warm. However the other guy from singapore was cold. I guess its just what you are used to!
