Joel and Elenas' is a great place to stay just as all the reviews say. Having flown down in the morning from La Paz in Baja, we then went straight from Mexico City airport by taxi to Poniente bus terminal then bus to Zitacuero and then taxi again to Macheros. 3 to 4 hours in all and about £40 for...

I stayed in the "Cozy" and expected to be in a former broom closet, but it was roomy enough for two, and very clean and comfortable. In addition, the owners run tours during butterfly season to various butterfly sites. They take care of everything.... guides, van, horses, lunch, etc. And they are very accommodating. They make it very easy to...

Thank you for your appreciative review of our lodging and butterfly tour services. Glad to hear that the cozy room was indeed cozy. It's always the last room we rent out because it is the least spacious (book ahead for bigger)--but even so we find when we travel that many a hotel room is nowhere near as comfy.

Elena provided excellent service in arranging our day trip from Mexico City to their B &B to see the Monarchs at Cerro Pelon. She gave explicit instructions on how to take a bus to Zitacuaro and then arranged for a taxi to meet us at the bus station. We are mid-60's and the trip was flawless and easy! Elena responded...

A beautiful, warm B&B just outside a magnificent monarch butterfly reserve. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the food served next door by the owners' family was a local delight. We are so glad that we chose the Cerro Pelon tour into the mountains to see the butterflies because it was only an hour-long horseback ride up and back,...

This B&B has very spacious rooms, beautiful mountain views and a coffee pot with coffee. Joel's mom, Doña Rosa is an excellent cook. Breakfast is included and other meals are available. The main reason for visiting Macheros is the Cerro Pelón butterfly reserve. If you are on a budget, go to the reserve, pay 45M to get in, and hire...

If you are anxiously sticking to a budget and looking to underpay Mexicans for their time and labor, by all means stay elsewhere! If you do decide to share the lovely space we've invested so much in with us, please do us the courtesy of not arguing about our prices after you arrive. They are non-negotiable and clearly stated on...

My husband and I stayed for one night at this lovely B&B. WE were in room 3, located on the lower level of the second house, behind the main house. The room was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The tiny bathroom was very clean and the shower had hot water which was very nice. We arrived early in...

We just got back from a quick visit to Macheros to see the butterfly migration. Everything was perfect. Ellen and Joel (JM Butterfly owners) made the arrangements for the trip and it was perfect. They connected us with a cab company to transport all 8 of us from Mexico City airport out to their lovely village and B&B. Upon arrival...

Our arrival to the JM Butterfly B & B was met by our hosts and owners, Joel & Ellen. We were invited to have breakfast at the only restaurant in the small village of 300 people and then our hosts drove us in their roomy Nissan Hiace van to Piedra Herrada to begin our horseback adventure to see the monarch...

Our party of two stayed for only 1 night (unfortunately) in a room in the main house. The power happened to be out for the February night we were there - apparently this is more common in the wet season but unusual at this time. We had a warm, roaring fire in the main house and candles throughout all the...

Thank you for your review, especially your point about length of stay. A one night stay often seem rushed; give yourself at least two nights to enjoy both the butterflies and the rustic charms of Macheros at your leisure.

My daughter and I stayed at JM for four days in Feb17. This is a family run B&B, and you feel like part of the family. I cannot express how over the top friendly and welcoming everyone was. Getting there. We took a bus from Poniente bus depot in Mexico City. It was a 45 minute taxi from the airport...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
JM's Butterfly B&B is 5 min from the entry of the Cerro Pelon Monarch Butterfly Reserve. We are located in Macheros, a sleepy, bucolic town nestled in a valley with stupendous views of the sunset and surrounding Sierra Madres. The B&B has excellent views, comfy beds and a communal fireplace. The restaurant next door offers fresh trout and homemade Mexican food. We are a locally-owned and family-run business. Staying with us combines the best of private lodging with as much of a family-homestay as you want. Tours of the butterflies are available Nov-March, or come by in the off season to relax and hike in a small farming community/internet free zone. We are 2.5 hours from Mexico City and Morelia. ... more   less
