We were bought afternoon tea for 2 by friends so decided to try here. So glad we did. We were greeted on reception and shown to a lovely little table set up for us in the corner. The lady that looked after us was just wonderful ( Irene). She couldn't do enough for us and made us feel so welcome. The afternoon tea was delicious and looked the part too. The home made scones were probably the best we've had. Will definitely recommend this place in future and look forward to returning to use their pool and go and see Irene again for coffee

My partner and I were treated to afternoon tea. We arrived at the hotel and parked in the spacious carpark. Once inside we were greeted by the reception staff and made very welcome. I was escorted to the lift for wheelchair users. Then immediately welcomed by Irene who couldn't of been more accommodating. Nothing was to much trouble. The afternoon tea was delicious and extremely filling. So much so that Irene gave us the things we couldn't eat home with us is a tub. The hotel was clean, tidy and inviting. It had a nice relaxing atmosphere and tastefully decorated. I'd absolutely recommend this hotel.

My son and his wife booked my wife and myself in for afternoon tea as a surprise. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were looked after by Irene. She couldn’t do enough for us. The food was fresh and tasty and the tea freshly brewed. The service was prompt, but we were not rushed in any way. There was too much to eat, so Irene boxed up the remainder for us to take home. Thank you to everybody who made our day.

I attend the hotel for meetings with colleagues, as it is well placed for motorway links. The communal areas are great spaces and well maintained. Irene looks after us so well with refreshments and lunches. Always a pleasure Irene 😀 Thank you!

We arrived at the Mercure on a very blustery day and the lovely warm lounge was at our disposal. Irene was very attentive and looked after us well. Our afternoon tea was well presented, delicious and very filling! Too much to eat whilst we were there, but Irene sorted out take home goody boxes. A very pleasant experience and we were able to watch TV too!

I knew before I booked that there were mixed reviews. For the 3 aspects that influenced my booking (bath and shower, room with twin beds and a decent breakfast) I would rate as Very Good. Ample free parking is also a great plus point. The friendliness of the lovely lady at reception, the cleaning operatives and the breakfast team was also a real bonus - they would rate as Excellent. If there was a rating between average and very good I probably would have plumped for that. Now for the things that detract from the excellent staff and the very good facilities....The entrance road is not very well lit so we missed the turn off. We reported that one of the bulbs needed replacing in the light above one of the beds: apparently maintenance have to change lightbulbs and they are only there Mon-Friday 9-5. There were a lot of dead flies on the windowsill and I spotted two live ones that I dealt with. I managed to locate and block off the source of the flies (a gap in the wall behind the headboard) so didn't bother reporting. On the Friday night there was a Christmas Party night. I would have been OK if it hadn't gone on until 1am which seems very late to put up with loud music. I would go back but I would know in future to ask if they have any function bookings and what time the music will stop. The pool area is very dated and quite creepy - if there hadn't been some kids having swimming lessons I doubt I would have hung around! And finally on the Saturday night there was two busloads of very anti-social children rampaging through the hotel (playing football in the corridors). They were so noisy I couldn't read in the bath so bailed out and rang reception. When nothing happened I got dressed and as I was walking up the corridor to ask the children to stop being a nuisance two "responsible" adults turned up. I'm saying nothing further but there needs to be some ground rules set for large groups of under 16 year olds.

Thank you for your review Julie - I have responded to your booking.com review following your feedback. Lovely to see your comments regarding the bath / shower, beds and breakfast. I am however sorry that your stay was disturbed by the in house party. I will be sure to look into the fly situation further to ensure if there is a problem it is rectified as a priority.

Had a lovely stay, breakfast great! Lots to choose from and hot buffet food at breakfast was delicious. The chickpea curry at evening meal time, credit to the chef it was absolutely delicious! Bed very comfy but the bed covers were scratchy and not soft, however I slept well mostly Irene behind the bar very lovely and welcoming. Two of the staff at breakfast also lovely and a warm welcome received, however there was one member of staff (I won’t name them) who was grumpy and didn’t seem very helpful, seemed to much to ask for a refill of the jug of tap water. Overall I had a lovely stay and I would come back again

I’ve reluctantly rated this average because of the building. It’s a large hotel desperately in need of refurbishing. Old worn carpets and scuffed walls and doors everywhere. A rather stark bar area - no comfortable sofas other than in a narrow corridor facing the lavatories. Pool not suitable for hotel residents - classes for children always taking place and are very noisy. Had to duck floats and various other swimming toys when trying to have relaxing swim. It’s a community pool and shouldn’t be advertised for residents. Pool itself is a good size. Changing rooms are dire. Now on the plus side; the suites are okay - small but adequate sitting area and nice shower room. Breakfast room is fine. Bedrooms vary - but need an upgrade. The great thing that makes me want to return are the excellent staff. Jimmy sorted out a problem with my room printout and efficiently and compensated me with a glass of wine while I was waiting. Reception staff were very good - Claire in particular - and sorted out a complicated booking. Lydia at breakfast was so helpful and friendly, Irene who works in the bar during the day is the loveliest lady who will do whatever she can to help. And I can’t forget ‘Bovril’ who seems to be everywhere. Message to the owners - you have a great staff team, the best, spend some money and give them an hotel to be proud to work in. Message to fellow travellers and Accor members - come here - it’s decent value - and the staff are great,

Friendly staff. Decent sized car park. Comfortable bed. Large room but so dated. Vintage bathroom, misfitting carpet, tatty decor, old wooden wardrobes and cupboards, no power sockets near the bed for phones etc. Please see the attached photos.
