The Press Hotel, Autograph Collection, set within a former newspaper building, receives accolades for its distinctive decor that honors its journalistic heritage, though some guests find the rooms to be on the snug side. While the hotel's cleanliness and prime location near Portland's attractions are consistently praised by many visitors, opinions on its value are mixed, with some questioning the rates given the quality and service received.

First time in Portland and so naturally this is my first stay at The Press Hotel. I was in town for two nights and picked The Press because it was centrally located and had great reviews/interesting history.
I hesitated to book this hotel at first due to the price but decided to splurge since it was my husband's b day weekend. The review will be short since there isn't much to say about this hotel.
Overall the staff was friendly, the place was clean but everything else was average for the price per night ($750-$800/night before taxes). For that price, you would expect more/better amenities. A few examples: no water in the rooms or water bottle refill stations, you had to ask the front desk or go into the bar for water. Tea and coffee are only served until about 10:30/11 no bananas/apples or any other free bites of food (in the morning or any time during the day). I booked a King room - large room and it still felt tight and the bed took up most of the room.
Tip: there's street parking and other lots around the hotel for $25/day
For the price, I recommend also checking out one of the chain hotels in the Old Port district they all looked relatively new, and most were cheaper than The Press while still being centrally located.

The Press Hotel is a lovely, clean boutique conveniently located across from City Hall in Portland. Rooms are well-designed, if a bit small, with excellent beds and a rainfall shower in the bathroom. Well placed near enough to both the Washington Avenue and Munjoy Hill areas, as well as to the Old Port area. Portland has become a bit more worrisome for tourists with the number of unhoused, etc. but the areas around the Press never felt sketchy. Overall, strong recommendation.
A few nits that we encountered to keep in mind:
*City Hall has a bell tower which rings out every hour, on the hour, with the number of that hour (i.e., midnight gets 12 bell tolls). We asked for a room away from the bell tower and didn't really notice it, but if you are a light sleeper take the time to request a distant room;
*TV in room was difficult to operate and Wifi was not strong enough to allow for streaming (fine for other uses);
*The door to the lovely rainfall shower doesn't fully seal causing water to seep out on the floor unless careful;
*Occasionally calls to the front desk from inside and outside the hotel went unanswered, as there is typically only one person at the desk;
*Our in-room fridge was not on when we arrived and we requested service while we were out. We returned to find a cold fridge but the door had been left open. Nothing happened, and the front desk was appalled to hear about this, but not exactly best practices.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
The location is excellent, our bed and bathroom was excellent, staff around the hotel were almost uniformly friendly and helpful. So why not 5 stars? Two negatives: coming back to the hotel at 3 pm after yet another hot and muggy day, my wife and I were looking forward to a shower and a nap (we're both in our 70's). The previous day, our room had been cleaned before 2 pm. This day, no. We saw the note on the door opposite ours that the cleaning person was inside, so we knocked, and asked if she could do our room next. No, she said, she only did the rooms on the side of the hallway opposite ours. She said ask the front desk to contact the cleaner for our room. The front desk clerk's response: "Rooms are cleaned anytime between 7 am and 5 pm, and we can't contact the cleaners to prioritize a room clean." Really? We have to check, ourselves, whether the room will be cleaned, and just wait in the lobby? We decided not to, and put the door tag saying "Skip our room" on our doorknob, showered, and napped. That's not 5-star service. Reason #2: while there's a restaurant on the premises, the Union (see our review elsewhere), one dinner there was enough to not eat there again. Too many great restaurants less than a block away to bother with Union. Two strikes.

Broken down hotel. Very big red flag. Don’t stay if serious person.
1) phone system didn’t work. In four days of our stay they sent engineering up (they claim) that said they didn’t know how to fix it and had to call the phone company. I don’t think they really sent engineering up to the room. So there was no ability to call room service or the front desk except with cell phone through the main line. So you can’t reach people half the time. So their phones didn’t work. lol.
2) housekeeping was really really bad at their job. Came in and they had emptied the trash cans all over the room. So they dumped trash and stuff. Dunno how the heck this happened. But also did not take away the room services trays.
Again could not even take away room service trays.
Front desk made up a story they hadn’t actually cleaned the room yet, but we know they did cause we found the woman who did it.
3) room service online link to order didn’t work. Front desk said never heard about this but then we found one guy who admitted it and said they had the wrong menu on the site. So couldn’t order room service.
All in all the hotel is breaking down. People with children are in danger of having an unstable hotel stay.

Thank you for sharing this detailed feedback. I apologize for the disruptions and inconveniences you experienced during your stay. We indeed faced a significant network outage during your visit, which impacted our systems, including phones and online services, leading much of our operation to go manual for two days. This was an unexpected and challenging situation, and I’m sorry for the inconvenience it caused, especially with the phone service and the online room service link. It’s concerning to hear about the issues with housekeeping, and I apologize for the lack of attention in servicing your room. What you described is far below our usual standards, and we will address these issues with the team to ensure they reflect the level of care we strive to provide. I regret that we didn’t have more immediate solutions available during this period, and I appreciate your patience and understanding as we worked to restore full service. Thank you again for your feedback, as it helps us improve our service and resilience during unexpected challenges. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a seamless and comfortable stay in the future.

We chose to stay here for one night, coming back from NB going home in ON. We know that Autograph collections are a hit or miss but reviews made us think this one was on the higher end of the category. The hotel hard product was beyond other Autograph we went to. The service, while very nice kept either lying to us or making up excuses.
We got contacted before our arrival, asking if they could do something for our stay. I asked for connecting rooms and we were told it would be put on request. When we arrived, we were told connecting wasn't available but they made an effort to put them close together but on a different floor... What? If they are on different floors, how having them on top of each other help?? When I mentioned that, I was told that they were oversold and that I'm lucky not to get walked. Felt very lucky indeed...
The room on points (basic room) was fine and smelled good. The paid room had all the issues: smelled like wet dog, had foam pillows (my profile says feather and extra feather) and while I was supposed to get a larger room, as I had booked a larger category, I had the exact same room as the points one. The hotel being oversold they couldn't move me.
Mentioned that on check out, I was told that the room was bigger but it's not a difference that can be seen visually. Why would I pay more for a bigger room if I can't see the difference?! The agent, which was very nice, understood my concerns and told me that she wouldn't check me out yet (it was 5am) and that someone would call me when management arrived.
This never happened, the room was checked out without any communication and I didn't even get a folio.
At $570USD a night per room, I expected more. We won't be back.

I was really excited to stay here, given all the hype. The hotel is nicely done, very tasteful, but it is small. Great restaurant on main floor, but you better have a reservation if you think you want breakfast on a Sunday morning (granted, we were there over July 4 weekend so probably extra busy). An an Ambassador member we were kindly upgraded to a larger corner room. It was tastefully furnished, nice bathroom, but it was small. There is only one chair in the room and it is a desk chair and if you sit in it no one can get between you and the bed. I looked up the price of the room and I bet we’ve it was $800+ (we used points), but that is a lot of money for a very small room. There were two windows but no view of anything except buildings acros the street (we were on third floor). Elevators are also small so there was sometimes a line to get the next one in the morning. I had to call twice to get a luggage rack brought to the room. We also had a shower that leaked all over the bathroom floor (it was a sealing issue, because it was not leaking near the door). We reported it the first night and then reminded them when we left the next morning so they could fix it. Nothing got fixed and the second night of our stay we had the leak and all the clean up again. We mentioned it again the next day before we went out and again, that night when we took showers before dinner, it was the same thing. So we cleaned up the mess all three nights of our stay. I understand when hotels get frustrated when guests write tough reviews when the problem was never mentioned when it could have been fixed. I agree that is not fair, but I mentioned it three times and it did not get fixed! I also mentioned it when we checked out, said they needed to fix it before the next guests arrived but the woman barely seemed interested and said she would make a note. Would have been nice if she said she apologized for the inconvenience, but that did not happen. The location is OK, but I would definitely stay someplace better located closer to commercial street and the waterfront. Sadly, there is nothing here that would justify paying more for the experience. At least t the Residence Inn (which I highly recommend) there are two chairs in the room!

While check-in and valet parking service was fast and efficient, the rest of our stay was not up to luxury standards. The room was so small there was only room for 1 chair, which was damaged. The pillows were terrible and the replacement pillows were not much better. At every luxury hotel we’ve ever stayed in, the pillows were either superior or there was an assortment of pillows in various degrees of firmness, but not here. The sheets while not horrible were not silky smooth we’ve come to expect. We had to have maintenance repair the desk outlet for our electronics and while they came promptly, we shouldn’t have had to request the repair. Perhaps the most inattention to details was at breakfast when the English muffin in my Eggs Benedict was burnt. How can you plate a burnt muffin? While we didn’t complain because service was in the slow side and we had plans, it still was annoying to eat around the black parts.
Our travel agent booked our room. We complained again at checkout and the desk clerk asked me what I expected when we booked through Expedia. What an insult. Shouldn’t all guests receive the same service, the same luxury no matter how the room was paid for? Our travel agent did misinform us about the accommodation we were to have. We had a regular room instead of the executive king and perhaps that room would have met our expectations.
The bathroom was lovely and lived up to the luxury expectation. The location was excellent.
We would not stay here again nor recommend this hotel. We also informed our travel agent of our unhappiness with the accommodations.

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. I’m truly sorry that we missed the mark in several areas during your stay. It’s disappointing to hear that the room did not meet your expectations for comfort and being left in a space of being heard and valued. This an amazing hotel. Location is perfect - 10 min walk to the piers with boutique shops, bars, coffee bars, and delicious restaurants along the walk. The area is safe and quiet, except for the firehouse next door. We are not sensitive to the occasional siren, but if you are, you may want to ask for the room that does not face that direction. The hotel has many amenities, including a complimentary car/shuttle to and from a place of your choice within about a 1 mile radius from the hotel, which you can arrange with the front desk or the valet attendants. You may have to wait 10-15 min for another drop off or pick up, so do plan accordingly, especially if you're on a schedule.
The room walls are thin which was only a problem when the neighbor on the first night of our stay blasted their television so loudly at 11:30 pm that we felt like we were watching the movie in our room. The front desk handled this immediately upon request and were apologetic, even though it was not the hotel's fault. Otherwise, you can hear guests return or leave, but most guests are courteous and conduct themselves quietly.
Every staff person we encountered was incredibly friendly, professional, and attentive - all the valet attendants, front desk representatives, bartender at Inkwell, hostess and servers at the Union restaurant, and housekeeping staff.
Our only complaint is that the towels never seemed to dry in the bathroom.
Highly recommend this hotel for vacation or business.

I loved The Press so much that we extended our stay in Portland! The rooms are well-sized for a city hotel and well-air conditioned. The beds are comfortable (but not too soft), and the location is perfect, both near enough to the highway to make day trips easy and within walking distance of the best shops and restaurants in Portland. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The valet is speedy (cost $36/night). The lighting in the room is warm, and the rooms can be made to be pretty dark for sensitive sleepers like myself. Outlets are VERY conveniently located on the headboard and throughout the room. The rain shower was lovely, though some leakage issues from the stall. The housekeeping can be slow (you need both to request it and leave about four hours), but this is becoming a more common issue in lots of hotels. It didn't bother us. The lobby is charming. Make sure to visit Central Provisions, Otto Pizza, Cheese Louise, Becky's, Alpine + Hunt Club (fantastic cocktails), Two Black Cats, Rose's (for bagels), Blanche + Mimi and Sherman Books. There are just too many cute shops and eateries to name. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

My new favorite Marriott property! This hotel hits all the marks.
Mason gave us a warm welcome at the valet desk, helped us with luggage, and gave us a recommendation for dinner.
Amira at the front desk did an excellent job checking us in. We were acknowledged as soon as we walked in and she took the time to walk us through all the offerings.
We ran into Larry from Housekeeping in the elevator, he was personable and stopped what he was doing to give us a tour of the gym and art gallery.
The lobby had a fire going and was incredibly cozy and esthetically pleasing. We had a drink at the lobby bar and enjoyed the scrabble and board games available.
We watched as the evening/overnight manager made sure that all the pillows were fluffed and everything neatly arranged in the lobby.
This hotel has a great feel to it. The room was clean and comfortable. The food and drink quality was superior. Everything is “on-brand” with being former Portland Herald building. And most off, the associates took pride in their roles and showed genuine care.
I’d go out of my way to come back to this hotel and to urge others to do the same.
