Great place to stay, very close to Acadia and priced very well. Stayed at the B&B on a trip to Acadia, Gretchen was very helpful and nice. I would recommend this place over and over and will stay there again when I come back.

Our host was very welcoming. The place was clean throughout and very charming. The breakfast was made with care and was great. The interior is very comfortable. Located close to a few excellent restaurants. Great conversation, too. The only nitpick I have is that our bathroom could only be accessed by walking through a shared hallway. But that did not... This is tough to review because the hostess was very gracious and the breakfast was excellent. The room was spacious and we had everything we needed. However, as others have said, the private baths are across the hall and the house is extremely dated. The carpeting is beyond redemption, clean bare floors would be a big improvement. There was really... More

Thank you Ronald for your feedback - it's always helpful when planning improvements. Which is happening this fall, after the season ends, and the hall carpeting is scheduled for replacement. Wear and rear does happen. In an older house, dating back a hundred years or more, when private baths replace former shared baths, they are placed where they fit -... More

As others have stated, it's quirky, it's dated, it could probably use some upgrades and sprucing up here and there, but I'd stay again in a heartbeat. Arriving on MDI with no place to stay on the Sat night of Labor Day weekend, Gretchen answered the phone and our prayers to find a place to stay the night. Gretchen is... More

This is not a B & B. Very overpriced for the conditions. The photos on the website are very misleading. Very dirty, smelly, carpeting disgustingly dirty, hair in food, bathrooms are either across the landing of the front stairs or down the hall. Got bug bites sitting in living room.....fleas I assume. Doors only lock from inside the rooms with... More

I'm so sorry that Virginia's expectations were not met but I do appreciate her feedback. As I plan for the future it's helpful to hear guest's impressions. Staying at a B and B is always an interesting and unique experience and long time guests will attest to the fact that each and every one is different and unique - as... More

We stayed for three nights at Penury Hall and just loved it. If you are looking for generic, plastic and veneer standard hotel type accommodation don't go here. It is so much better than that, Gretchen is a wonderful lady who makes you feel like you are her temporary family. We have a very comfortable room and bed that was... More

Thank you, Nick and family, for your review. You truly enjoyed your time here and the whole family was busy from morning til dark. I'm sure you took away many good memories of Acadia, Maine and Penury Hall and wish you could travel from the UK more often. Would be good to see you again. More

A comfortable, homey B&B located in quiet Southwest Harbor within walking distance of several excellent restaurants. Gretchen, the owner, is the real attraction. She graciously shares her home with guests. She manages to find things of common interest amongst all age groups to insure good breakfasts and great conversations. The bedrooms were comfortable and spacious with a good wi-fi .... More

Thank you Judy for your review and so glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. For a quite small town we do have a wonderful variety of excellent restaurants, and all within walking distance. Interesting breakfast conversations which I can usually hear from the kitchen. More

Spacious common rooms for conversation, TV, distant water view. Hostess anxious to please, but... bring your own toiletries as they were in short supply (one tissue in the box, no body soap provided, hand soap close to empty, body lotion in pretty dispenser was watery, shampoo left overs). Threads hanging off hand towel. Shower was jerrymandered, stair and upstairs carpets... More

Gretchen is a delightful innkeeper. She has a wealth of world experiences and knowledge that makes for great conversation. Having been traveling for two weeks and staying at all B&B's, we have quite an ability to compare B&B lodgings. Speaking specifically about the Inn, you stay in the home of the innkeeper, using her living area for your living area.... More

Gretchen is a very welcoming and friendly hostess - most willing to help in anyway. She is by far the best part of staying at Penury Hall. But I seem to be the only reviewer who comments on the house itself - it is very tired and worn. In comparison to other "old" B&B's, I was quite surprised to see... More
