I am writing this review so you will not be fooled as we were. I stayed here a week ago and by the website along with pictures it sounded fabulous......NOT. It is old in all the wrong places. It is dark, dated, and frankly not at all like the pictures on the website. Carpet in hallway...worn and in need of a vacuum! Rooms AND bathroom old and tired. Cleanliness of bathroom.....horrible. Leftover hair on the wall of shower, ugh!!! Linens on bed (bed one foot off floor) were thrown on. We payed over $300 for this??? Breakfast included.....yikes! A to-go brown bag to eat outside. Half the hotel closed off due to Covid. I wrote a letter expressing my disappointment, with pictures of hair. One week later.......a response only to say, “Thank you for your feedback.” That’s it??? Wow! Don’t waste your money!

We planned a trip to Newburyport as our first time being away since March and the Garrison did not disappoint. Not only does the entire town feel safe (masks are mandated) but the Garrison is really on top of things as well. Masks were required in all common areas, breakfast was takeaway only, one way entrances/exits, limited number of people in elevators, etc. We stayed in the Editor and not only was the room beautiful, but it was clean, comfortable, and the fireplace was a real treat. The staff is super friendly and we genuinely looked forward to interacting with them each day. The takeaway breakfast sandwiches were excellent and I would say overall, the hotel made the best of the regulations put in place.

Covi didn’t allow us to really experience what this amazing Inn has to offer. That doesn’t stop me from positive stay that I had with my husband. Just outside the busy part of little quaint town but close enough that if you forgot something in the room, you still can go back (well, I am getting older). Beautifully appointed rooms! Large bright full of light. Very sweet surprise with bathroom products! Lovely gesture! The decor of common area (caffe?) including lobby has those cool chairs that you could easily imagine yourself sitting down and have glass of wine. With all what is going around we still felt very safe. Masks were required yey! And definitely distancing not a problem. Thank you for having us.

My friend and I spent a night at the Garrison Inn to celebrate her birthday. We stayed in the loft room which was charming. Only issue was the heat/AC unit which was extremely loud and made it difficult to fall asleep. Also, upstairs loft room has a side window with a street light just outside so this is not the room for you if you like it very dark. Front desk staff was very nice. We enjoyed tea in the afternoon and a nice breakfast. They also have parking in the back or in a lot across the street. Would definitely stay again.

The place just doesn't live up to it's historical past. The rooms are sparsely decorated. The bathrooms not very nice. The breakfast doesn't offer gluten free and you have to go up to this window to order. The lobby is very nice and the staff were friendly. I expected the room to be better.

Thank you so much for taking time to give us this feedback. We appreciate all comments from guests as they help us improve issue that we may have overlooked. We are so deeply sadden to hear that you feel that we did not live up to the historic past of the hotel. I am somewhat surprised to hear that as we strive to maintained the structure of the hotel and presence of historic past, shown by all the rooms having documents, sign in pages and newspapers all framed and displayed prominently to show how proud we are of the hotel's history. We especially did this with the breakfast room and lower lobby which is covered wall to wall with photos, news clippings, old hotel items documents, and signs from the Abolitionist movement and from the original hotel. We are always looking into how we can improve this to make sure that we are living up to our important and wonderful history. We would also like to apologise that our complimentary made to order breakfast was not to your liking. Given that we are a small boutique hotel and have only a small staff the hotel as always had breakfast set up this way. It is very rarely that we have any negative comments regarding out breakfast. We cannot change having to order from the chef directly given that there is only 1 staff member available for breakfast.. If we receive more feedback along these lines then we will definitely look into how we can accommodate those people who would like to be served at their table. Finally, as we have said we are a small hotel and we cannot provide the special dietary requirements other than by omission of the food stuffs that are not suitable. We have several items on offer that would be considered gluten free and we do always suggest to guests that let us know in advance that they are welcome to bring any specially made foods with them and the chefs are more than happy to make the items. We have made several renovations in recent times and from the sound of your review it seems you stayed with us more than a couple of years ago. This would explain the comments on the history of the hotel as we have made more of a push to include it in our modern incarnation. Also the rooms have moved away from the minimalist decorations to a more history feel. We hope that if you do stay with us again you will have a better experience with the updated renovations.
