Detailed Reviews
The hotel is slightly off of busy Van Dyke, so traffic noise is minimal, though it is slightly hard to see from there. I did find it easily enough and checked in sometime after 5PM. This process was fast, and I was told because of renovations there is no breakfast area, and only grab and go was being served. I went up to my room on the second floor (there are only two floors, a very small property), and signs of the renovation are clearly seen with microwaves in the hallway.
The room itself has a microwave and fridge, plus DIRECTV. Bed is comfortable; I had a decent sleep. Shower has the typical low water pressure. I cannot tell if my room has been remodeled yet, so it’s in good shape.
Grab and Go next morning is not in plain sight- you have to go to the desk and ask for it, where they will hand you a bag. It contained an apple and muffin. No cereal or juice or certainly hot food, but fresh coffee is in the lobby.
There is a pool in spa, with wooden type walls, giving a ski lodge appearance. I would guess this has not been remodeled yet.
Check out was fast and I was on my way.
Bad Axe is only around 3,000 people, and a bit away from Lake Huron, so my guess is they don’t do a ton of business outside of tourist season, which would explain the small size of the property. The rate was $114 with tax, slightly on the high side with renovations ongoing and no hot breakfast. Factor that out, and it’s not a bad place to stay.

Overall the staff was excellent, but the hotel is in the process of being updated (April and May 2022)
The breakfast was typical HI Express and quite good. Internet was solid and reasonable performance.
The main challenge is that the new beds they installed are EXTREMELY high. Unless you are near 6' tall they can be hard to get into without assistance. The desk clerk said they are talking about buying footstools, but have no timeline for acquiring them. Once we got into the bed, is was quite comfortable.
We had 2 rooms, but the first one had a very noisy fan so that party moved to another room when the TV remote would not work with the Direct TV system. All was well in the third room.
Speaking of the TV system, they do have a very large number of channels and worked quite well. But I was unable to find a Sleep Timer on the remote. 8-(
There is not much else available in this area, so if you plan to stay here, I encourage you to bring a footstool!

Shannon at the front desk was a gem and the other employees we encountered were very friendly. This property could use more wheeled luggage racks for sure as it seems they only have one (that was not to be found and we were there quite sometime with car issues the morning we were leaving). Others in our club who stayed there were needing a luggage rack also so I would suggest not having JUST ONE, many of us were not spring chickens and would have appreciated the convenience of not having to lug our baggage to our cars.

The breakfast was great with hot eggs (scrambled were nice - and cheese omelets that were just OK with maybe Velveta in the center instead of real cheese). They had sausage patties (port or turkey) and bacon. The also offered biscuits and gravy that we don't eat and did not but others seemed to like. I liked the hot cinnamon pastries, but there were lots of other cold choices. Far better that so many hotels where waffles are the only "hot" item (that Holiday Inn oddly does not offer).
A few people mentioned that the bed was too high and it certainly was. My 5 foot wife could hardly get up on it. Just way too high and you can't sit on the side of the bed with your feet on the floor (to say put your clothes on). What on earth is the point in putting it so high? But if you could get in it, the king bed was comfortable as were the very large pillows (both firm and soft).
The overall room was very nice, clean, with nice chaise lounge and bench for luggage that doubled as a bench (it needs a light over it to see in your luggage). The pool was nice and the shower in the bathroom was large and beautiful (walk in with sliding glass but no tub) . I note the the refrigerator had no freezer section at the top that we expect to keep our polar ice for our cooler frozen overnight when we are traveling. It is a simple but important feature that hotels should know is important and for this price we expect. We were there just one night but thought it was still well worth the price (we paid about $151 with tax, the AARP rate).

The hotel is near to restaurants and set back away from the main road - great location. The HVAC unit has a "fan on" setting that helps create a white noise when sleeping. The only issue we had was that the doors to the connecting room kept rattling every time the neighbor used his room door. An improvised door stop helped somewhat, but we should have put one on the neighbor's side of the connecting door as well. All in all though, I think this is the best hotel in Bad Axe.

The hotel was recently remodeled. It was very clean and for being full it was actually pretty quiet. Our room was next to the elevator so you could hear it from time to time but not horrible. The bed was comfortable, had a kuerig coffee maker, fridge and microwave. The pool area was clean too. They were serving grab n go bags for breakfast since they are still remodeling that area. The bags had water, fruit, granola bar, muffin and yogurt! There was hot coffee on the counter all day! Staff was kind. We left a little later one day and thought our room would get cleaned but it did not, so I would suggest letting the front desk know if you plan to leave late and need room service. My daughter had the large 2 queen bed suite, it had a sofa sleeper in one large room and a 2nd room with a door that had 2 queen beds. Only issue with that room is no bathtub. If you have children or grandchildren that don't like showers, ask for a room with a tub although with the remodel they may all be showers, but they are nice showers!! Overall, great place, will definitely stay again.

We were in town for a funeral, and reserved a suite through IHG’s website directly. We were not informed of the complete renovation that the hotel was undergoing. It was a mess! There was old furniture and old carpeting that had been removed, in the hallways and construction on both levels going on. The rooms themselves were not finished and there was no buffet breakfast other than a bag with some fruit and a yogurt in it. For over a hundred dollars a night for four nights, this was very disappointing. Certainly not what we’re used to from IHG. I spoke with the front desk several times to see if they could discount our rate or add bonus points to our membership, to which they said “they’d look into” which as of yet has not happened. We will find other accommodations for our next visit. I suggest you do the same.

This hotel is under new ownership with a superb management and well trained staff who are ready to serve you and answer any questions at a moments notice. Rooms have been updated and old beds have been replaced with new comfortable beds. Me and my wife had two sound nights of sleep without any outside the room disturbances. The hotel provides a great continental breakfast with many selections to choose from. There is a average size dining area that is well maintained and kept very clean. Other areas the hotel provides is a small gym and swimming pool. For a restful stay I highly recommend their hotel.

We stayed here for a destination wedding. This is the best hotel in the area. The hotel has been upgraded/remodeled. Rooms are available for king & 2 queen sized beds. Dogs are welcome. There are only 2 floors so, be aware that rooms could go quickly for high season in the Lake Huron area. Rooms & common areas were clean, as well as the workout room, pool & hot tub area. Breakfast was adequate, hot, & well replenished, as the hotel was almost full on Saturday night. Service & personnel were very good, check in was easy.

We stayed here from 5/15/2021 to 5/16/2021. The morning of 5/16 I was getting ready in the bathroom and my husband was sitting in the chair in the room. While getting ready I only had on my undergarments. I heard a noise and walk out of the bathroom and some "employee" was opening our room door. This person NEVER knocked on the door, never announced himself while opening the door, nothing. I was standing there in only a bra and underwear. I slammed the door and locked it.
My husband and I have traveled a good bit and NEVER has this happed at a Holiday Inn before.
Also the hotel was a complete mess! No common areas available due to construction. Where the carpet was removed in the hallway, the carpet remaining was not taped down, total tripping hazard!
I think next time we come to Bad Axe we will stay anywhere but this hotel!

Hi I9005UKkathleenm, I am glad you left feedback. Thanks for choosing our Holiday Inn Express Bad Axe! Positively memorable and comfortable stays are what we promise and I'm concerned what you had was the opposite. I have shared your comments with hotel management, who responded with genuine concern for the impact this had on your stay. I know they appreciate you sharing your experience and am confident they will take steps so this doesn’t happen again. I have sent you a private message to obtain additional details regarding your stay. We hope to host you again in the future so that we can give you a much better experience. Cheers, June A.
