The Thumb of Michigan is flat, rural, farming territory now peppered with hundreds (?) of huge windmills. Though its shoreline perimeter attracts visitors, the area in general is not a major tourist destination, and consequently, not populated by very many motels. Bad Axe is the hub of commercial activity, with most of it on the north edge of town. I probably drove by the Franklin Inn (on the east edge) hundreds of times many years back when I lived nearby, or when I later visited routinely. At that time, the Franklin was the only "premier" overnight in Bad Axe. It no longer holds that distinction, but on a recent trip to the Thumb we found it to be clean, comfortable, and convenient. Yes, the rooms are spartan and the overall motel is in need of a makeover, but if you are just looking for a place to crash and not to have an "experience", it suits that need well. And compared to the couple of big name hotels now in town, you will save some bucks as well. Did not try the restaurant, but was impressed with its size / appearance. They must do a pretty good business to keep it going. Desk staff have definitely not mastered the science of hospitality, but at least they were not rude. Overall, it was a pretty good value compared to the few alternatives available.

I booked a room here for my boyfriend and I on our road-trip around Lake Huron because of the reviews on TripAdvisor, and was not disappointed. Most other motels in the area have 2-night booking requirements during the summer, and the "chain" hotel in Bad Axe was full.

When we pulled up, I wondered if we'd arrived at a motel or a bowling alley... but don't let the exterior fool you. The service was prompt and friendly--even at 3:30AM when an alarm was repeatedly going off in the room next to ours. The room was quaint, but the fridge was useful and the Wi-Fi worked perfectly.

The Sunday breakfast buffet was amazing... and delicious. We didn't eat dinner at the Franklin Inn, but I would definitely stay there again to try! A great value all around. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to stay near Bad Axe.

This hotel is absolutely awful. Not only are the beds rock hard but the staff is extremely rude. Their "free" breakfast is nothing but stale doughnuts. We were awoken in the middle of the night accused of smoking in our room. We were threatened with being thrown out in the middle of the night. The member of the staff who accused us of smoking refused to listen at all when I invited him in to smell for smoke. They are falsely charging us a $250 cleaning fee which we will be contesting in court. Absolutely the worst place I've ever stayed and that is saying something. He also insulted a disabled woman for being slow. My advice is stay far away from this place. The Ameriwainn is much nicer and in the same price range. The hotel is infested with bed bugs and the bath tub drain does not work properly. The bed frames they use are too big for the mattresses which has resulted in many wounded shins. This place is definitely NOT a pet friendly hotel. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Ehh. Quintessential Bad Axe, Mi. The Thumb is one of the most depressing areas in the entire state of Michigan. In days past the Franklin Inn held its own serving community functions. The restaurant was better and the motel not so worn and dated. My most memorable restaurant experience was dining with a friend - the waitress brought our drinks and took our orders - didn’t know what chives were…. But ok - she was young… She took our order and went home. It was the end of her shift. But she didn’t hand off our orders to the kitchen or another waitress… we sat for quite awhile before anyone noticed… it was SO BAD it was hilarious …. But we were not pleased. New waitress quickly took care of us … but the experience was SO Thumb. The popular buffet offers a nice salad bar and FRIED. The steak tips are grim. But not fried. Everything else is FRIED. Dessert table offers various box mixes and soft serve. The bar is entertaining for people watching with notable local drunks. We have stayed longer then originally planned to watch a love triangle play out. New boyfriend and old boyfriend comparing notes with their drunken lady of the hour. Thirsty farmers in authentic working clothes and muddy (?) boots give it an authentic flare. if you are really starving and really need a cold beer - this is the place - the beer is cold and the food is FRIED.

The Franklin is getting old and tired.
I checked in originally for a week as it was very reasonably priced and I didn't need anything special. Well the rooms are nothing special and are in drastic need of a redo. Again .. cheap place to stay so what do you expect. But the deal breaker was that I had no internet at all and there was nothing the motel could do to fix it ... so they easily gave me my money back for the remainder of the week and we parted ways.
Would I stay there again ... no
Would I recommend someone to stay there if in the area ... no
There are other alternatives ... cost more but then sometimes we get what we pay for and this was a prime example of that.

4 different family members stayed there over the weekend. There are no protectors for bed bugs, I even looked at My bed. My daughter was bit several times and the hotel said I'll check into it. Ha...don't stay there. Two other hotels the other side of town.

We had a recent stay at the Franklin Inn in Bad Axe, Michigan. My husband and I attended my class reunion. The buffet dinner was good and it was great to see all my classmates! However, the accommodations left much to be desired.

The wallpaper was partly peeled off the wall, the bench seat fabric was torn, and it was dingy and old. It hasn’t been updated in decades and it shows. Our room had no windows in it at all so we were unable to get any fresh air or look outside.

There was a tub/shower in our bathroom but I would not use the tub. I did take a shower which was adequate. However, the washcloths were white and had permanent stains on them. The bath towels looked to be dry and folded but oddly when I went to use them they were wet.

The room did have a small refrigerator in it but it was not plugged in so it would have taken a while to cool down if we had needed it.

The worst part was the odor in the room. The entire hotel and dining room smelled strongly of Febreze with an underlying scent of stale tobacco which we found to be very offensive.

The mattress was stiff and lumpy, the pillows were inadequate, and my pajamas smelled strongly of Febreze the next morning.

The next morning we decided to have breakfast at the Franklin Inn restaurant. My husband ordered oatmeal and I ordered one scrambled egg, homemade sausage, rye toast and hash browns. The gigantic oatmeal serving was inedible due to its stickiness, the hash browns were greasy and the eggs were bland. The worst part was the sausage; it had a very bad odor. I asked my husband to taste it for me, he took a small bite, made a horrible face and spit it out. He told me not to eat it because there was something wrong with it. We discussed our dissatisfaction with the waitress who argued with us about the sausage and charged full price for everything. Very disappointing! We will not stay there again.
