Detailed Reviews
I gave this place three stars, but I would actually say 3 1/2. The goods are quite good and the bads are quite bad. The good.....great spot on the bay. You can walk out to several seating areas, or bring a camp chair and choose your own spot. you also have access to the beach if you want to swim. If you get a room on the beach side the views are wonderful. Also, the restaurant and lounge were very good. The food portions are huge. You could easily split anything with another person. They also give guests some nice discounts for the restaurant and lounge. Outside seating is available through the lounge and the menu is the same as it is in the restaurant. The beer was also well chilled. Also the beds were good for sleeping and the room was clean.
The bad.....The chairs and seating in the rooms is awful. We had two people, there was one hard chair and a sofa in our room that sunk to the floor when you sat on it. You might need to roll out of the sofa in order to get up. There was a nice size table for working in the room, but we had takeout one night that we brought to the room. Without a second chair one of us ate standing up! Trying to eat while sitting in that sofa would have been messy. The windows in the room did not stay open. We would have liked to hear the waves. One night I put a shoe in the window to keep it open, but they would not stay open without wedging something between the sill and the window. The wifi was adequate, but I needed to use the "business center" to print something and that was ridiculous. During my stay I saw others also having issues with that computer (yes, there is only one computer for business). I ended up going to a local Printer (Print N Go. They were wonderful) to get my documents printed.
Overall, the view and access to the bay tip the scales to the positive. We would return, but there certainly could be improvements.

I am really surprised at some of the poor reviews of this hotel. I have stayed at this resort several times over the years. I have not been here in about six years and prior to my last visit thought it was getting rundown. We decided to give it another try, and we were pleasantly surprised at The improvements made at this hotel. When we were here about six years ago, the rooms smelled musty and the hotel appeared run down And in need of some TLC.. we walked into our room expecting it to smell musty and it did not. We could tell that they had recently painted the rooms and the carpet was replaced since our last visit. We were on the second floor. They had a dehumidifier in the hallway to help with the moisture. They did not have a dehumidifier on the first floor so perhaps that is why people felt the rooms smelled musty??. Our bed was extremely comfortable and the grounds as well as the beach area and indoor pool were well-kept.. The hotel did indicate that due to staffing shortages, they did not serve breakfast. We did breakfast on our own, but realize that the entire town has most restaurants closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so it made getting breakfast a bit challenging. Overall I believe this hotel has made improvements in the aesthetics and comfort. I am not sure if the second level has been renovated and the first level has not?? But we were not disappointed. We did not eat lunch or dinner at this hotel so I cannot comment on the food. One last comment, due to the fact that the restaurant did not serve breakfast, they did give you $25 per day to enjoy drinks at the outdoor bar.

We came on July 23, 2021, and checked right in, 3 or 4PM. I had very high expectations based on great conversations over the phone with the reservation department.
There was included a $25 restaurant credit so we planned on having dinner in their pretty restaurant. The room was nice, 3rd floor like we asked for. More on that later.
So we came right down about 530 pm and I ordered "boneless chicken wings" buffalo style. My wife had fish I believe with giant waffle fries and she liked them. But the wings were awful. They were more like fried lard hush puppies, burnt. Our waitress, Madison, was great. She did her best. But my food was hopeless.
There was not much of a beer selection, either, what I would call convenience store beer. Pretty sad for a great beer state like Michigan. I settled for a red ale, Killians I believe. Just had the one.
Now, this is a beach resort and there is lots of activity inside and out at all hours. The Bikini beach bar looks like lots of fun for younger people. We are not young but used to be.
I still think this is the best lodging in Tawas City, but be prepared not to experience peace and quiet.

We didn’t enjoy our stay. The hotel is very dated. We had two rooms on the first floor with water views. Traveling with two children (6&8) We were excited that their pool was open. However, when we went use it after dinner it was closed for cleaning! Necessary I know but disappointing that they couldn’t clean it after closing. The walls in this hotel are paper thin allowing the noise from drunk neighbors to keep the family awake. After calling the front desk to complain the neighbors decided to knock on the walls, scream through the door, hold their music players up to the door, knock continuously on the door and the window. The front desk was not helpful in enforcing the quiet hours or the unruly guests. I would not recommend this hotel. Spend your money somewhere else.

excellent staff, both at the desk and in the restaurant. room was clean. however, for 160.00 a night the room was nothing special, bed was very uncomfortable(soft). no continental breakfast, had to ask for coffee for the pot in the room. seating in the room very uncomfortable; two dining table chairs. lighting poor for reading or doing table work. overall we would not recommend

We’ve been going to Tawas Bay Resort annually with our family and friends, with 5+ rooms for 15+ years. After this year, we will not be back. It was more expensive with less amenities… right down to no toilet paper or towels, rooms not ready on time, no beach bucks or breakfast, and the beach was a disgrace. The sea birds took over and there was goose poop everywhere! Kids couldn’t play in the sand.. It used to be so well kept up outside even with the sea birds. Used to be Well raked and freshened up every morning and little evidence that they are even around. We appreciate the hard working staff… but such a shame… it was such a great time while it lasted.

The hotel is under new ownership. They no longer give coupons for the restaurant. We went to the restaurant on Friday afternoon and decided to get the "special" which was a burger. How can you screw up a burger?? Well you can! They were so salty they weren't edible. We were the only ones in the restaurant and it took 30 minutes to get our food which was cold when it finally arrived and then not edible. The waitress took off 10% but the bill was $70 and I gave the waitress a tip even though I shouldn't have even paid for the meal! 3 Burgers and some chicken wings. Awful. Then - nothing in the morning. Nothing! Not even flavored creamer. So I guess if you've got a beach and tiki bar, that's all you need. Last time I went the restaurant was closed. Not going again. Been going there since the 90's. Bummer.

This resort has a nice beach on Huron, but it's definitely run down needs updating. Was probably nice at one time but smells old and stale, thin walls loud air conditioning. It's a shame when a hotel doesn't upkeep.

It is recently come under new ownership, I've been staying here a couple of times per year for many years and work has been done on the place and it's been improving.
Check-in is late 4:30 and they have a new menu as of Nov. 1, 2022. I haven't seen yet. The food is good but expensive so I hope they are lowering the prices as they told me they were going to do.
It's nice to have a bar and restaurant on the premises so you don't have to leave the hotel to eat.
The rest of the amenities are listed by the hotel, I do recommend Tawas Bay Beach Resort.
