This isn't the fanciest of resorts, but we were not expecting such in a small town in Central Northern Michigan. We were wanting a cabin in a campground setting with access to atv trails, river trips, bon fires, and lasting memories... and that's exactly what we got. Three couples shared Cabin 12, which was a 3 bed/1 bath cabin at the top of a small hill. The driveway was tricky and you would likely need 4wd and room to creatively park 3 vehicles (but 2 easily). We were hauling 3 atvs so left the trailer parked at the bottom (quads at Cabin). Basic dishes, pans, towels were provided by not many of (could use more). Our friends, a family of four, had Cabin 10 a short distance away. The first morning we went on a river trip with 2 rafts and 1 canoe, which was fun. They take you around the bend and drop you off and then pick your group up at a location w power lines nearby. Be sure to check on time allotted by livery as the latest we could be picked up at the end was 5:30 pm, which was quite a bit earlier than most locations. This is not specifically mentioned in brochure. A note on door of livery said Closed Wednesdays (we didn't know until we arrived on Monday). Day 2 consisted of riding trails w a wonderful lunch at MaDeeter's in Lazerne. Resort delivered exactly as it should, however, could improve w just a few more extras such as more glassware, towels, communication (such as a book of info in the cabin).

Pros: The cabins were stocked with everything we needed, such as being, towels, dishes, pots and pans.

The resort has lots to offer, but we didn't use any of the extras outside of the cabin.

The floors were covered in a new laminate and were very clean.

Cons: There was a strong urine smell in the bathroom - YUCK!

No wifi. :(

The bathroom sink was coming apart from the wall. There was a large crack in the shower plastic.

My husband and I stayed two nights during Columbus Day weekend in a cottage/cabin at Hinchman Acres in Mio, Michigan. Reasonable and clean accommodations. Older lodging from the 1930s - 1940s. Small vintage cottages are well maintained as well are the grounds. Units are nestled in the trees alongside two fish ponds setback approximately 900 feet from a two-lane highway. Located within walking distance of the Ausable River.

Cottages are more suited for people who enjoy the northern Michigan outdoors. Less desirable for travelers who prefer modern chain motels. However, Hinchman Acres does have the basic amenities. We stayed in unit 15, and it was furnished with electric stove, refrigerator, microwave, television, hair dryer. Units have tile floors with scatter rugs. Owner, Natalie, was friendly, pleasant and accommodating. Kid friendly as there is a small playground.

For more information check out their website at [--]. Mio has several family-style restaurants. We found the Paddle Inn to be our favorite. Not fancy, however, tasty home-cooked food with generous helpings served by pleasant staff.

On Saturday, July 30, 2016, my wife and I took our kids on a kayak trip in this section of the river, along with another family that had never been on a river trip before. The river was beautiful and the weather matched! However, the beauty of the river quickly turned as hundreds of people in tubes used the river as their own mardi gras. Drunken floatillas of 20+ people passed around bottles of hard liquor and screamed litanies of profanity in front of my children. Drunk people insulted me and my wife as we passed by. At one point, 50 feet in front of me and my 9 year old boy, a lady popped her top and flashed her naked body while others threw beads at her. This happened several times. There was a conservation officer on the river, but I did not see him do anything about it, and it seems that one conservation officer is not enough to take care of this enormous problem. We were completely disgusted and appalled. A few times I quipped that I had children and asked that people refrain from saying and acting this way in front of them. Each time the retort was “why did you bring your children here on the weekend?” The last time I checked, the beauty and majesty of the resource belonged to everyone, and everyone has the right to use the river in a lawful manner. I didn’t know that there were times when we couldn’t bring our family kayaking on Michigan’s famed Au Sable. It seemed that everyone in Mio said there is nothing they could do about it; the canoe livery, Hinchman Acres, did nothing to discourage it. In fact, on the bus ride home from the river the bus was filled with these drunk people that were screaming profanities in front of my kids. Several needed to be carried on to the bus they were so drunk. The bus driver said and did nothing. I complained at the office, but they said there is nothing they could do about it. It's not right that I cannot bring my family here to take a kayak trip without complete debauchery happening all around us. I really wish they had told me this when we made the reservation with them and told them we were bringing 3 families, but it seems they just wanted our money.

Stayed last weekend at Hinchman Acres (cabin 11). The cabin was very clean and updated. Had everything we needed. Good Bed, wood stove, fire pit (stocked with wood), TV with good reception to catch up on the games, kitchen....etc. Thought it was real bargain and plan to stay again. Had we brought the wives, they would had been just as comfortable. Good Job Hinchman!

This place puts a high priority on serving people. The river is fantastic as well as the scenery. They have kayaks, tubes, and canoes to rent at a reasonable price. They are also good stewards of taking care of the river.

Stayed at the Hinchman Acres Resort because they offer cottages and tube rentals all at the same location. Loved the cottages. Ours had a screened-in porch as well as an area for a fire outside with BBQ and picnic table. We sat by the old campfire at night and talked about the good old days. Cottage had everything you needed. We requested some items that were missing and they delivered them immediately. Location right on the Au Sable river. Free fishing, game room, basketball court and many others things to keep you busy. Walking distance to town. Wifi worked fine but I did not come to Mio for the Wifi. Front desk was great. Greeted me by my first name when I came through the front door even though I had never been there before. Stayed the night and then got up to rent a 4 passenger tube with our friends. Great process for handling the 4 of us. They have got the process down pat. Very good equipment. They drive you to the river and then picked you up when you are done. Had a wonderful time. We will return.

We stayed for 2 nights in mid-may, and thought this was a very nice and well run resort, set in lovely grounds, next to the Au sable river.

Our visit was primarily to see Kirtland`s Warbler, and this place is perfectly situated for it - literally a 2 minute drive across the river to the ranger station. where their tour commences, so you cant get any closer.

We had booked a small 1 bedroom cabin, but were upgraded to a larger 2 bedroom cabin by Erika, the owner, who was lovely and helpful throughout

The cabin was great, with a full kitchen, and all appliances including a full-sized cooker and fridge/freezer. It was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. It even came with an real fire place and firewood provided- which was lovely, especially as this year`s hard winter was still not over!

Entertainment wise, there was a good choice of TV channels and free wifi , but best of all, for us as birders ,were the eye-level views of birds just outside the windows, just a few feet away.

Two other Brits we met on the tour, said their motel accommodation in Mio was more expensive and only just "OK"- by contrast we found Hinchman`s was great value and a great place to stay, and we would highly recommend it.

The customer service at Hinchman was amazing. All of the employees seemed to care and were very helpful. The location was perfect very convenient no long walks to the river. Pickup was easy. The river was awesome/beautiful. Great Trip would definitely recommend hands down!

This little mom and pop resort is one of our favorite places to go for peace and quiet and fishing and canoeing. The owner, Natalie, is lovely and truly cares about what she does. The fully equipped cabins are quaint and older, but neat as a pin and clean as a whistle. The two spring fed ponds are teaming with fish (one pond stocked with trout!) and the swimming area has a sandy beach decked out with comfortable lounge chairs. A large, communal fire pit brings everyone together in the evenings. This is the summer place you remember if you grew up in Michigan. Located on the Au Sable river, you can rent your canoe/kayak/tubes from Hinchman Acres. The Mio area has a large Amish community so there are beautiful farms, delicious Amish bakeries and shops to visit. Also, the wonderful Noreast'r Music Festival is in Mio the second weekend in June every year.
