I have been driving past this place for so many years and have always wanted to stop and check it out. All the eye catching colors are relaxing somehow and drew me in every time so I finally had the opportunity to stay toward the end of May. This was an awesome place to go without having to fly somewhere tropical during this time and when you are on the beach side of the resort, you truely forget that you are still in Michigan. I had the most relaxing, enjoyable time. The cabins feel like home, relaxing and comfortable. The staff was amazing, they genuinely cared that we had a minor concern when we got there but it was a simple one (a dirty spoon behind a lamp) that was probably a child on the previous stay before ours but it was hidden good. Lol. The staff came down and rechecked everything right away and were very attentive. We figured out we were being picky at first, they helped us relax, staff was friendly and so down to earth. We had such a good time that we booked the following week and the week after that too, I've been home a week now and I'm having withdrawals. Nothing but good things to say here. I fully recommend checking this place out. I'll be back up again very soon!

I have missed feelings about the review. Location and setting are a plus for sure. We stayed at Tiki Too which has 5 houses in this location. We rented Mango Mansion for 2 nights. The kitchen and dining room area are very nice. Updated appliances with lots of cupboards and countertop.

However, the 4 bedrooms were small and outdated. Same for the 2 bathrooms. Surprised that some of the basics weren't provided such as hand soap, wash clothes, shampoo, paper towel, etc. We understood that we needed to bring our own bath/swimming towels and blankets. The kitchen was stocked with cookware but no basics such as coffee, salt, pepper, cooking spray, etc. The place is advertised for 10 people yet there are only 5 coffee cups (most are stained or dirty), and silverware for 5! We had to wash plates, cups, and silverware after each meal even with the group of 5. Other thinks such as the outside grill was provided but no charcoal, no lighter, or other basic items to use the grill. The 2 couches in the living room are old, torn, and uncomfortable.

We stayed there the weekend after labor day. Based on the website summary, we thought there would be a bon fire on Friday or Saturday night. Although fire wood was there, we assumed staff would stop in to start the fire for the guests (3 of the 5 houses were occupied). However, this didn't occur and we didn't have the materials to start the bon fire ourselves.

Overall value of the stay was overpriced in my opinion. Approximately $300 per night after the official end of summer (weekend after Labor Day). Likewise, cleanliness of the house was also noted. I don't think the bedsheets were changed before our stay because there was sand in the bed on our first night. Food wrapper found under my daughter's bed.

For the price, we probably won't stay here again. Our experience with hotels and Air B and B's have been much better.

Beautiful view, but beach pics on line are old. It’s mostly sea wall now.

For some reason they have walkways connecting everyone’s porch, so our neighbors keep walking over our deck, within a foot our two of our windows. It’s rude and odd. There is tons of beach to go around, and walkways around as well.

Two cabins over they’re smoking non-stop and it’s blowing in to our unit

These two items are making in an average stay at best.

We knew to expect people all over the beach, just didn’t expect them to be basically INSIDE OR RIGHT UP TO OUR Windows all night.

Don't waist your time and money!!! I booked a 4day 3night reservation only to have them cancel it within a hour and half of calling me to ASK if I wanted to add another night. I called the manager Lindsey and she was so rude, immature and not professional at all!! So if you don't mind taking off work & booking a vacation, only to have it taken away for I still don't know why. Then this place is great for you. If you care where you spend your hard earned money. Than stay ANYWHERE else!!!

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in my 63 years - unit 16 Mai Tiki!
The room was so small you would stand up and hit the wall! No AC !!! But no one said anything about that. When I stated I was thinking about leaving. Was told there is no refunds! The unit is small and dirty. Bugs Everywhere!
You would think you were in a third world country.
This is one place to stay away from !
Trip advisor gave it 4 star’s!!!! Are you kidding me.
The ole saying- you got me once! You’ll never do it again!!
Beware’ don’t visit here cost me $600.00 for three days of hell!

This place dose not give back your deposit (the minimum deposit is $300.00) I had to cancel due to a resent health issues. When I called to cancel(about 6 weeks before I was to go) she ask why and I told her( if your not giving the deposit why do they care) when ask about my deposit she was very rude and quick to say I didn’t get any of it back. Plus this place needs to update there online pictures, the great picture they show are not accurate. So if your going to book be sure that you are ready to lose $300.00 if something unexpected happens in your life

Take a mattress topper with you, beds are firm. We were supposed to have an outdoor movie and never did. We did have a community bon fire that one of the guests started. We went to the main office twice and both times they were out.

I made a reservation online and contacted the owner Theresa directly to confirm. She confirmed the stay and the location we selected that day. However, the following day they called back now saying the resort was overbooked. They of course offered more expensive options or locations on the property that we were not interested in at all. Their website is extremely vague and difficult to navigate - you need to look at multiple websites to see photos of "some" of the properties available. When I asked for further details of the units I would be potentially moved to, the owner became increasingly more difficult to talk to. I think she forgot that as a business owner, it's a good idea to apologize to a customer when an error is made and then try to make it right. Theresa was rude, ill-tempered, unapologetic and dismissive. I feel it was a complete bait-and-switch operation as I was being pressured to pay a higher rate than I had reserved or move to an undesirable location. Thanks for failing to honor the confirmation you gave me and for disappointing my kids Theresa.

This was our first time to Tiki. We booked online a few months in advance, we thought we were getting cottage #12 that was in all the pictures. When we checked in they "stuck" us at (to our limited knowledge) some place call El Cortez. WHAT's THAT? There was nothing on the site about El Cortez.
Basically Tiki bought them out last March but did not really make this clear on there website when you book. They also have not updated the sign. The bottom line is this causes frustration and confusion. We were really disappointed (at first) when we check in to unit #12 at the El Cortez.

So TIKI please listen to my advice. Please change the sign of the El Cortez and also do not use repeating numbers for all three of your resorts. Start with the number #1 and go from there. it will avoid a lot of confusion. We were not the only people who thought we were getting a different unit (two people on the same weekend tells me there is a booking issue) - your website is too "slight" to distinguish between the resorts.

OK if you are still reading, after all that, I think the unit we stayed in was decent. It was clean and furnished well, except for the tube tv. Tiki needs to replace that with a flat screen to save room. Also you need to either inform people on how to light the stove (that's right I said light the stove, the stove is so old you need a match to light it - this is a major safety hazard. I could just imagine a 20 something group not understanding pilot lights and leaving the gas on. So TIKI please invest some money and get self lighting stoves. I don't have any hair on my hands after trying to light it)

The bathroom is ok, the shower is TINY!!

This is a shout out to the employee named JUSTIN, I'm still waiting for my fan that you promised me. Again if you are planning on staying there, there are NO FANS OR AC. This makes the unit almost unbearable. One of the other units called the front office for a fan and they went to Walmart to buy them a few. When I asked, a person named Justin said he would do the same, this was in the morning, when I called back in the afternoon Justin whined about how he had to go to another store to get it and he was making a "special trip" just for us. Well Justin and Tiki you guys should have had fans in the units from the start of the season. I can't even imagine how people stayed there when it was 90 plus. Please take care of the issue as well. We never got a call or the fans, so that is a bit unprofessional (luckly it was cool enough that night). Justin go now and make sure there is at least on fan in each unit.

So the units need new TV's, fans or AC's, and new stoves.

The resort itself is ok, we were at the El Cortez so we felt a bit isolated from the cool units that are pictured on line. I will say that my one experience with one of the woman employee during the raffle was very positive. I could tell she cared about the guests and had a big heart, so I really liked that and would like to see more of that.

A little about the area. please do yourself a favor and go to Lumbermans Memrorial and the other sites down the road, that's what PURE Michigan is all about.

Everything I wrote about is true and factual. I think the resort is very nice, it just needs some tune ups.

On Sunday, June 28, my fiancé and I stopped in on our way back to Saginaw after spending the weekend in Oscoda at my parents summer home. We were looking for the perfect place on the beach to host our wedding and weekend full of fun next June. Mai Tiki seemed to have everything we were looking for, except friendly customer service. We asked the guy at the front desk a few simple questions and he seemed bothered that we were even there. One of my questions was when did he recommend we book by, and he said they book 50 weeks out and the earliest they would take our reservation was July 5. We left, feeling puzzled as to how many the resort would even be able to hold, we were looking at renting the entire resort plus the sister resort down the road. I called back on that following Wednesday to speak with someone and was told to come in on Saturday, July 4th at noon and we could get a tour and meet the owner.

When we arrived on Saturday, not only were we denied a tour and didn't get to meet the manager but we were also told by the guy at the front desk that our dates in June were already booked!!!! My fiancé asked when it had been booked since we were originally told we couldn't put the $500 deposit down until July 5. The guys only answer was he didn't know it was just in the books, with a very cocky attitude. Something wasn't right, but hey if you don't want our business that's fine! You'll lose out on others also when word gets around.

After reading some of the reviews on here I am glad we didn't book Mai Tiki. How embarrassing for us if we had our guests stay in a filthy, outdated resort. As they say, everything happens for a reason. If I am ever asked by my clients or staff on recommendations for resort places, I will make sure I mention our experience at Mai Tiki. Word of mouth is the best advertisement.

Response from Mai_Tiki_Mi, Owner at Mai Tiki Resort
Responded 9 Jul 2015
I'm so sorry that you were not able to book your wedding at Mai Tiki Resort. Unfortunately the dates you were looking for were already booked for a wedding for next year. The manager that you spoke to did not have the wedding dates for the following year yet. You sent me an email and I called you immediately to discuss the wedding dates. I know that you had an appointment at noon on Saturday the 4th and as you stated you got caught in the 4th of July parade downtown and were not able to be here at that time. Cleanliness and customer care are our priority. Every cottage has been updated and we have a full time 24/7 staff to assist our customers. Every night we have a bonfire, throughout the week we have movies on the beach for kids, we have a fowling game, life size jenga, sand volleyball, playground on the beach, tiki bar that serves ice cream, slushies, hot dogs and stand up paddle boards and kayaks. We do have a facebook page Mai Tiki resort where you can see many pictures and our website maitikiresort.com Thank you
